Casio Men's GW9010-1 G-Shock Mudman Solar Atomic Rally Watch

25% off watches at Amazon

Amazon shipping rates seem to be back to cheaper rates like the good ol' days.

This Mudman is a classic and will appreciate in value. These were quite hard to find and I purchased my last GW9010 a few years ago on eBay for about $200. It is surprising to see stock at Amazon. I have purchased x3 to keep as in investment and will resell on the watchuseek forums or on eBay in years to come. A 'new-in-box' discontinued G-Shock of a reasonably popular model like the Mudman, should sell for about $250 quite easily in a year or two.

And unfortunately, almost all of the new G-Shocks in the last 3+ years have been ever increasing in size. The GW9010 wears quite small. Bigger than a GWM5600 of course, but it has a compact feel to it. Wears fine on 6.5"+ wrists.

Do you mean "will appreciate in value provided you find a bigger fool than me" because the fact that you bought it for $200 "a few years" ago and now it's $146 isn't making me confident :p

The Amazon price also isn't making me confident (I don't mean the deal price is bad, historically it's good just not seeing this appreciation in value your talking about).

    • Yea, you're right .. it's not the current reasonably low price that makes it a good investment, but they are new-old-stock and no longer in production and a reasonably popular model.

Take a look at the DW6600 … I checked my amazon account and I bought one for $48.48 on 25 Mar 2008. Now take a look at the pricing on eBay for used models.

Sure, you're not going to retire with the returns, but it's a bit of fun and the GW9010 is one of my favourites, so it's nice to have a few new ones tucked away in my collection.

I'm not one of the famous international collectors, like Sjors at http://50-gs.blogspot.com.au/, but I've bought and sold probably about 50 to 100 G-Shocks over the past 8+ years. Favourites are the GW9010 series or GWM5600 series. Usually buy for about $180 and sell for about $100 on eBay. I enjoy reading the watchuseek g-shock forum.

I did have some success with some Citizen divers … I just liked a specific titanium model from the 80s and tracked down 3 of these very watches for about $250 each, then wore them for 6 mths, and then decided to sell on eBay .. about $700 to $900 each. Just a bit of fun I guess. More fun than a few bets on the X-Lotto.

      • I remember reading about one guy on the watchuseek forums and he found a box of DW6600 in a department store in the US. He bought about 40 of them for US$50 each and is holding into them, but he can easily offload them for about $150+ .. no risk at all with those.

        • Usually buy for about $180 and sell for about $100 on eBay.

Using math you are losing more than $80.00 after eBay fees & postage.

        • @28Degrees:
yea .. buying a new G-Shock which is in current production, then wearing it for a few months, then selling the watch will obviously lose money.

but it is easy enough to buy the right used g-shock on amazon-jp or yahoo-jp, then sell it for the same price or a bit more on eBay-au.

something like The Silencer GW400 is a favourite of mine to buy from the jp auctions, wear a bit, then get bored and sell off for a better price on eBay-au.

  • Buying a watch as an "ïnvestment" lol

    • Not lol, it's doable.

Just have to be patient, it's like buying art, like anything else, just have to find the right person who appreciates it.

      • and not scratch it, or wear it at all.

        • It's like collectibles action figures.
Now everything is "collectible" so you need to know more to be able to "invest" in it.

OP bought 3 for this reason.

          Kinda like Rolexes.

    • A G-Shock 'investment' is just a bit of fun.

But there is a solid & reliable market for real 'investment' watches like Louis Moinet, Franck Muller, Piaget, IWC, Chopard, Hublot, Breguet in the $20K to $5M type price range.

As grunge said, just like art.

Even the cheapo Rolexes at $10K are a decent investment for the right model .. here is an easy read with some data …

      • You would definitely need a storage vault, locked safe or some kind of secure location for all of those expensive investments. Otherwise it's just like leaving tens of thousands of dollars in the house for the junkies if they break in.
