Next best Sydney/Brisbane price is $1,331 but does fly a bit more directly via Perth + Jburg.
Longer way to get there via Singapore + Addis Ababa but might be worth taking a stopover in Singapore. (31/34 hours vs. 21/23 hours).
1st leg is a Qantas flight (Emirates codeshare). 2nd leg is via Ethiopian Airlines ranked #76 according to Skytrax(American is #77).

  Ethiopian Airlines are probably the best airline in Africa. They have an ultra modern fleet including the 787 and A350, they also fly all over the world and have an excellent safety record.
