Annoyed by Changes to Boost Mobile's $25ULTRA+ Prepaid Plan

So I was on Boost's old plan with the $20ULTRA and $40UNLTD options.
I was looking at the new set of recharge options they introduced a few months ago and decided that the $25ULTRA+ (which has 1.5GB of standard data) was better for me than the current two options on the old plan, as I tend to use roughly 1.5 GB of mobile data a month meaning the $20ULTRA gave too little data and the $40 gave too much.

Earlier today I made the switch over to the new plan (which is permanent) and did my first recharge for the $25ULTRA+.
Upon successfully recharging I got a message from Boost saying from 25/10 the $25ULTRA+ recharge will no longer be available, with this link explaining that a new $30UNLTD+ option will be replacing it.

Now I'm just venting because I'm annoyed I switched over to the new plan specifically for the $25ULTRA+ recharge option only to be told that it is being scrapped in a month and I'll have to pay an extra $5/per 28 days for extra data I don't want.
There was no mention of this change on their plans page when I checked beforehand, and if I had known about it I would have just stuck with the old plan and saved myself $10/month by continuing to get the $20ULTRA recharge and using my data wisely.

    • Honestly, this isn't a comparable provider.

I was with (pre-4G) Aldi for several months - it's very much a cut-down version of Telstra. I was travelling through remote parts of WA and SA; true Telstra SIMs were getting full service; Aldi got zero (or, 2G only in areas that were 3G/4G.)

It seems that you only get reception on Aldi where there's competition from other providers. Where it's a Telstra-only area, you get nothing (or 2G only, which has a range of only a couple km and is fairly useless for data!)

Moved to Boost and haven't looked back (that said, I don't believe that Boost gets full 4GX.)

      • I thought they are the same in term of network coverage (Aldi and Boost)….

"Boost Mobile and ALDImobile both use the Telstra Mobile network. Remember though, their coverage is not as broad as the full Telstra ‘retail’ network. Telstra keep their full national network to themselves – it’s called their ‘retail’ network. ALDImobile and Boost get a subset of the full Telstra (retail) national footprint. Specifically, both Boost and ALDImobile get population coverage 98.50% ."

        • Nah, that's not right. I guarantee that for at least 3G, Boost and Telstra are identical.

4G, I can't vouch for. But Aldi is not equivalent to Boost for 2G/3G (unless they've since bumped Aldi up, but Boost has always been proper Telstra 3G.)

Here's some out-of-date info that predates Boost 4G:

"With unrestricted access to the entire Next-G network, Boost offers theoretical peak speeds of up to 42Mbps in DCHSPA+ areas. Typical speeds can be between 2 and 10Mbps, depending on the type of HSPA service being available in the area. No 4G LTE services are available on Boost Prepaid Mobile."

        • @picklewizard:

Yeah i'm sitting here with a HTC One M7 smartphone with a Boost Mobile SIM in it on the pre-paid Ultimate $40 plan and it's showing 4G LTE. Boost Mobile pre-paid has unrestricted access to the Telstra 4G LTE network.

          @hollykryten:

How do you know that it "has unrestricted access to the Telstra 4G LTE network"? They certainly try to skirt around the subject, but Boost 4G and Telstra 4G are not identical. There's limitations around 4GX (the 700 MHz spectrum).

https://www.whistleout.com.au/MobilePhones/Guides/boost-vs-a… : "Boost operates in partnership with Telstra and runs on the Telstra 4G network. This isn't Telstra fastest 4GX network but it is still blisteringly quick, with download speeds up to 100Mbps."

http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/boost_mobile : "The service is provided over Telstra's full 2G, 3G & 4G networks. Boost Mobile have full, unrestricted access to the Telstra network in terms of coverage. Boost customers however do not have access to Telstra's full 4GX data speeds."

Again, to clarify; Boost 4G is NOT IDENTICAL to Telstra's 4G offering; coverage is identical. For Aldi, coverage, when I was with them when their offering was 3G only, was VASTLY inferior.

          @picklewizard:

Boost 4G is really actually on the Telstra 4G network (registers on the network as Telstra 4G LTE). Boost Mobile just doesn't have access to the Telstra 4GX network (Telstra 4G isn't the same as 4GX).

And you are wrong. Boost is probably the only one that has unrestricted access to the Telstra 4G network.

"The service is provided over Telstra's full 2G, 3G & 4G networks. Boost Mobile have full, unrestricted access to the Telstra network in terms of coverage." <—— That means Boost has unrestricted access to the full Telstra 4G network. It however has no access to the Telstra 4GX network. They being two different mobile networks.

          https://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/boost_mobile

So yes, Boost 4G and Telstra 4G are identical when it comes to mobile phone coverage network. Both are on the full unrestricted Telstra 4G network. That's nothing to do with Telstra 4GX.

I was over in the city yesterday, and pulling downloads of about 4mb/s at times through Boost Mobile (registered on network as Telstra 4G LTE). Not bad.

        • @hollykryten:

Dude the link you posted (that I also posted) backs up my argument.

Boost has full 4G access. Boost has partial 4GX access. Both are 4G LTE networks. I'm not wrong, I've always maintained that the difference between Boost and Telstra is that Boost doesn't have full access to Telstra 4GX.

Why you gotta be like this? Trying to start arguments with strangers on the internet? Can't we just be friends?

        • @picklewizard:

I never said they have full access to Telstra 4GX. They however have full access to 4G. That's all i'm saying.

        • @hollykryten:

          Dude, 4GX is a type of 4G.

      • No but Boost mobile gets proper Telstra 4G LTE.

  • This is actually great news for anyone that has purchased the $20 sims previously as we will now get upgraded to the new $30 plan which has unlimited calls vs $100 of calls previously and 3GB of data vs 1.5 GB and still get bonus 1GB on weekends.

It's not great news for users who expected to pay $20 x 12 and now have to pay $30 x 13 each year.

    • I got the $20 sims for $5 from previous deal and use them to port month to month alternating with the $30 Woolworths sims that I got for $1, so works out to an average of $3 per month for me….I'm happy with that.

      • Spotted those sims in KMART -thought ah not really worth getting, then saw this "new deal" 7GB all up - went and grabbed the last 2 they had.

        • +1

Cool, what is the expiry? I'm good for sims until April 2018 ;)

        • @billy_bob:

          Both March 2017

      • +1

Do you guys port your current number to these sims every month??? I'm a bit confused…

        • +1

Yes, can port your number to new sim each month, just has to be a different sim each month. E.g. you can't port from Boost sim to another Boost sim, so I buy a few Boost, a few Optus and alternate each month. Cheap calls and data if you can be bothered to change each month.
