Hungry Jack's General Discussion and AMA

Hi world,
I am an employee of Hungry Jack's.
Oh cool you say, but it seems like we may be one of OzBargain's favourite fast food stores!

I always get questions asked in comments or PM'ed to me, so why not just ask any queries you have below?
I'll also keep you guys updated on any new things we have coming up :)

    Thanks op for making this!

Could you please let me know which oil does HJ use to cook fries in?

    • +1

      Vegetable

  • Is there a simple way to order a cheese burger style burger in a Whopper size. I do not want the extra crap that is on a Whopper but i do want its bigger bun/patty size.

    • Probably see if all the ingredients (bun, patty, cheese) are cheaper

    • Order a whopper with:
      - No mayo
      - No tomato
      - No lettuce
      - Add mustard

    • easiest way I think would be to order a whopper but remove the veggies you do not want, remove mayo, add mustard.

  • what happened to the burger released in ~2006, i think it was called country style or something? it was on a long bun

    • Replaced with a burger called a chicken royale? Similar burger but now on a 4 inch whopper junior bun instead of a long bun.

  • My observations on Hungry Jacks in general is it is very hit and miss. You can get a great burger sometimes, and sometimes it is junk. There is so much quality variation from store to store and visit to visit. My local store in Mundingburra, QLD is a shocker for it.

It's like a crap shoot if your going to get a good or a shit meal each time you go there.

The change to the new chips is definitely a good move in my opinion. I also hope they keep $1 frozen coke. I love being able to get a nice cold beverage on a hot day for a good price.

It's the same for every fast food joint, but perhaps Macca's has more consistency. My local HJ's is awesome. My local Macca's is awesome. My local KFC is shite. My local Domino's is shite, but I have been to other Dominos that are excellent.

  • OP, how does Hungry Jacks compare to Burger King in Oz? Hungry Jacks and Burger King are the same company but I was disappointed in the burgers sold on the Gold Coast. I used to eat at Burger King, MOS Burger, Lotteria and Wendys in Japan. Of course the latter fast food chains were very different to each other but I thought that Burger King was pretty good there. The quality here is somewhat inconsistent. I do like to new chips here though.

    • I have no clue, never been to BK

    • When I was employed in 2001-2003, it was called Burger King. Then the name changed to Hungry Jack's. Nothing really changed.

  • Can you change the chips to angry onion/onion rings when you used vouchers?

    • +1

Yes, there's a surcharge to do it though.

      • I pay 30c to change regular chips to onion rings (or at least I did before the new chips came out).

    • +1

      Should be able to

  • How come they got rid of ability to see them grill burgers? (this was years back) — and replaced it with microwaved patties -_-
(for the record i much prefer HJ's burgers especially double whopper)

    • +2

The patties aren't cooked by microwave

  • Why HJ started Charging for sauces 30 cents each?

    • +2

      Idk, head office

  • My local HJ's frequently runs out of nuggets, the offer of substitution with chicken finger chips is always offered. When a sub is offered, it is possible to haggle ie "Yes the fingers will be ok but I want 12 of them instead of 6 nuggets" or would this be considered poor form with low chance of success?

    • Probably wouldn't allow

    • Perhaps HQ will have to work on the demand planning for this store.

  • Does Paul Langmack still own any HJs in Western Sydney? I remember getting out to one of the Campbelltown stores and being served by him, and after asking what he was doing there he said he had to work in one for 6 months to be able to purchase a franchise. From memory he may have had 2 back then

  • I have been ordering Ultimate double whopper with Angry sauce, angry onions and jalapeños.
Is there a cheaper way to indulge my desires?
Ie. Angry whopper, double, with bacon & cheese?
    Some other crazy combo??

    • Probably not mate

    • +1

The ultimate hatred of wrath burger with double angry.

    • If you do this, maybe it will cost roughly the same but you get more food.

2 x Whopper with cheese (vouchers) $7.95, for one of the burger, add angry sauce (should cost nothing extra), angry onions, jalapenos and a slice of bacon. I think that may bump it up close to $10, which is roughly the same as a Ultimate double whopper typical price.

Then transfer the otehr whopper patty and cheese to the custom made one.

Done and you get more carbs and veggies from the leftover burger.

  • @Food Are you still around? The A-F LED sign. That is rating your service right? Over what time period? Day? Last 2 hrs? What is your stores sign usually showing.

My local store is anywhere between A and F but it's F more often than it should be. Everyone gets a busy night but having shit service every 2nd day isn't good.

    • +1

Well that's a very old system, we don't have that. We have a very complex system(have a look around on that YouTube link if you're really interested).
But yes, that A-F would be rating the drive thru speed of service over the day part.

  • What is the policy with travel mugs for coffee? Sometimes they refuse to refill because "they don't do it" but I always like because you get more coffee and save the environment.

    • +1

Hmm I've only ever had this once, the customer asked me to put two of the old $2 med coffees in his mug. I'm not even sure on this one tbh :/

      • Appreciate the reply. You must be really exhausted.

        • +1

I had just finished work -_-

  • When the cashier refuses the large upgrade with the vouchers, is there anything you can do or say?

    • +1

You can say thank you and go next HJ

      • Lol, have gone to Subway instead in the past if they refuse

    • +1

      (my views)
Tell them where you got it from, request manager, if then no then walk across the road like stated 😂
Then write a complaint and include the web link of the voucher

  • I've been following the thread and reading all comments….. But comng back to it now after tonight.

Are all the voucher prices already in the till/POS?

Ordered the $3.95 chicken royal meal tonight and its the first time I haven't automatically been charged the voucher price. Was charged at the speaker, $6.95 and they only adjusted the price at the window when showing the voucher on my phone. Every time previous I've just been charged straight up, $3.95. I've never had to actually show the voucher on the phone before…..
My daughter won a free cone on the shake n win and she hit the redeem button in the car in the drive through. I explained all this at the window and after we spent $14.85 they took back the cone saying they wouldn't let us have it……on the shake n win.
50c cone on shake n win and charged us extra. Very officious staff tonight.

  • Starts tomorrow: 'Overloaded Chips'
    One guess what they are…

  • So apparently there are no more vouchers? I tried to order a meal deal for two the other day and they said that the voucher meals have expired. Any idea if and when there will be a new voucher coming out?

    • +2

They've technically expired but they can still be used in the system as such

      • Ah ok, so the girl was just being bitchy. She didn't like it when I used the free upsize coupon instead.. it's weird how some staff take it all so personally.

  • +1

New vouchers should be out soon.
All the old ones plus (don't quote on prices they'll be around that)
$1.95 TWO small onion rings (normally $3 each)
$3.95 chicken fries and small fries

    • Chicken fries? Are these new?

      • No?

        • I need to get out more….

Haven't tried that yet, chicken fries with fries, with a side of drink

  • I won't go to Mcdonald's ever again. This week on Tuesday I was driving my nephew to scouts and we went through the drive through and ordered the current special which was quarter pounder with free fries and and chips. Anyway before we left, he opened it and the burger had a big bite taken out of it. I stopped in the parking lot, got out and returned it, wasn't given an explanation for it, they said they would make me a new one, I won't mention the store for I felt sorry for the store manager.

A few months prior, I was at the drive through at Thornleigh and waiting for my order, I could hear disgusting conversations going on very loudly in the cooking area, it was really appalling and it lasted minutes as I was waiting a long time for my order.

I've only gone to Mcdonald's 5 times in the last 12 months, 2/5 bad experiences is too much. They are on my list to avoid now.

Never had problems with HJ's thou and it's a bit cheaper too.

  • +1

    We changed Nugs again :/
    Old ones were good IMO

  • Lot of things have gone up in price as of last Tuesday

  • I miss the page of vouchers deals. The app sometimes has a fairly good 2 for 1, but not often.
