Hungry Jack's General Discussion and AMA

Hi world,
I am an employee of Hungry Jack's.
Oh cool you say, but it seems like we may be one of OzBargain's favourite fast food stores!

I always get questions asked in comments or PM'ed to me, so why not just ask any queries you have below?
I'll also keep you guys updated on any new things we have coming up :)

      • whats the deal with coke zero not being available for refills. but it's behind the counter.

        • That's a store to store basis

    • -2

You are suffering from solipsism. Nobody cares about you at all let alone your shake and win.

    • +1

This is me. I do it all the time at Circular Quay store. At one point the staff ask me "Orange juice or A Long-Black today?" Hahaha

  • +1

How long does it take to clean the sundae machine……? Why do they always seem to have to do it at lunch time or dinner time?

    • +4

I'm not how long the cleans are, but since we're a 24/7 store it would be done overnight.
Any good store wouldn't clean their machine during a rush, unless it's broken and they don't want to say that. And yes, those things break so easily.

  • +2

is there a reason why stores don't microwave burgers?

every time i ask for microwave the burgers, they never do it

    • +2

Some contents may not be microwaveable, otherwise then I'm not sure because they should fulfill your request

      • +2

Is it still standard practice to microwave the heel and meat of a burger without cheese, like a standard Whopper, Whopper Jnr etc?

I worked at HJ's when I was about 15 and our managers used to kick our arse if they ever caught us not heating up the burgers. It seems so common place these days to get lukewarm burgers, and if you watch the staff making your burger you can see they clearly just don't care and about 60% of the time they don't bother to heat it up.

Occasionally you'll get someone who is doing the right thing and microwaving the bun and meat but it's way too hit and miss for my liking.

        • +1

I'm only just learning the back of the store however I'm pretty sure it's compulsory to microwave the heel with no cheese

        • @Food:

I thought it was still the case, the staff are just very lazy sometimes.

        • Agree with this. I avoid HJ as burgers always cold/warm

  • How would we know if a store accepts vouchers aside from rocking up there

    • +4

Rocking up there is the only way unfortunately

  • +1

Why do you microwave the burgers?

    • +2

      Get them hot.
The only whole, full burger we microwave is a cheeseburger and the rest only the base and the patty/cheese

      • +1

        Ok fair enough…

Would it piss off the kitchen to ask them to flame grill me a raw patty? I'm happy to wait 10 or so minutes than eat a microwaved patty.

        • +3

No it's all good! As long as you're happy to wait then go right ahead!

        • @Food: I have asked for the equivalent of Mcdonalds before being "From Scratch" when ordering a Whopper with Cheese and still received a lukewarm burger at best, not sure if they actually did it, the wait was about 3 min.

I find a good indicator is if the cheese is melted from the heat of the meat pattie. Unfortunately in this case I become very ill, felt really unwell with severe dizziness and went into what I would call a literal food coma for about 14 hours, haven't eaten Hungry Jakes since :(

        • @yacman: they probably didn't do it from scratch then :( sorry about that mate

        • @yacman: So is the problem with McDonalds or HJ? Seems to me the problem should be with McDonalds if…

I have asked for the equivalent of Mcdonalds before being "From Scratch" when ordering a Whopper with Cheese

        • @Food: Thats ok, one thing I noticed is the meat pattie had a slight pinkness to the middle of it (something I usually like if comparing it to a Burger Place like 8Bit or Royal Stacks) but maybe because the meat pattie is so thin they just cooked it for a minute so on each side and it was too rare? not sure but I would like to give it a go again just a little scared due to not having a good burger from there for so long and the last experience just topped it off.

I thought I read somewhere once that HJ's never cook the meat patties fresh anyway but just put frozen ones with painted on grill marks through a grill conveyor belt them microwave them?

        • @ProjectZero: Sorry that's my fault for being unclear, what I meant was the term that I know to use at McDonalds is to ask for the meal "From Scratch" that means not just fresh fries but also a freshly grilled pattie, I never usually have issues with this besides the wait which I am expecting since it has to be cooked fresh for about 7 minutes, but IMO the burger quality is at least 10 times better.

TLDR: I meant McDonalds actually cook it from scratch when you say that, Hungry Jakes I'm not so sure but I doubt it.

        • +1

          @yacman:

My friend used to work at one HJ's where if a customer ever asked for it to be made fresh they would just microwave it.. The stories he would tell me about how their franchise owner would try cut costs..

  • +1

I wish I could get a hot whopper from HJ's. EVERY time I order a whopper it is luke warm at best. Is this a burger that will be microwaved if I ask nicely?

    • I guess so

    • Ask for a fresh order.

  • -3

I agree with burgers being too warm
Its the reason i dong go there anymore

    • +2

What are you agreeing to? mountainman is saying that it's only lukewarm and he would like it to be hotter.

      • -3

Yep and thats what im agreeing with..

        • +2

Do you know what lukewarm means?

        • -2

          @ronnknee:
          No, teach me

        • +7

@2Krazy: It means about as warm as the piss you're talking.

        • -3

          @thedude23: cute.

        • @ronnknee: Yes, its akin to my sex life.

  • Was the Chicken Crunch a popular menu option?

    • It was, I miss it:(

      • It's still here in QLD afaik?

        • Probably once your store's stock runs out but it's definitely gone for now

  • This reminds me I lodged an online complaint about service and staff a while ago and never heard back - do you know if they should always respond each time?

    • They should respond, unsure why they wouldn't

  • +1

I remember once I went to a Hungry Jacks with a free large Coke coupon from the Shake & Win app. I didn't really want Coke so asked if they could just fill the cup up with tap water, and they completely refused, saying it wasn't allowed. Is this true or were they just making it up?

    • +2

Well (I'm guessing) water is cheaper than the post Mix so they should do it.
I've never experienced that situation but I would do it for the customer.

      • +1

is there any policy on tap water.?
Had a Hungary jacks employee or owner/manager refuse to give water in a cup. supposedly wasn't allowed….
never had an issue from other staff previously.

        • +1

I thought all restaurants had to offer free tap water by law?

        • @mooboy: I believe that's only if they're licensed (serve alcohol).

  • +1

just wanna say that the 5 for $5.95 is a great deal!!! HJ has better prices than any other fast food places and better food quality!

    • +2

Personally I'll go the normal stunner with no nuggets for $5.25, but thanks!

      • I would have said that too until I put those nuggets into the burger and WOW! I'm hooked.

BTW: Nuggets in the USA(Burger King) are different (crumbed) and much nicer :-D

        • Jeepers aha

        • I was very unimpressed by the nuggets in the US. Sure they were super cheap but not very good :/

        • Agree with you. My boyfriend is American and when I was over there he used to get nuggets from McDonalds occasionally, except the last time he felt like some fast food we were near a BK and we just got them there instead. We were super surprised— Burger King USA has some of the best chicken nuggets I've ever had, and I speak as someone that doesn't really enjoy chicken nuggets that much. They were much nicer than the ones here and nicer than USA Maccas.

That said, the Chicken Fries are the worst.

        • @Spooked:
They are much nicer than the AUS one's IMHO and yes they are cheap. I had 20 nuggets for breakfast one morning (feeling ill around nugget 17 ;-) and it cost me $3 lol

        • @LeavingTheWheel:

Haven't tried the Hungry Jack's nuggets, and I don't think I will as the Burger King USA ones turned me off. I'll have to take your word for it that they are better! :)

Yes they were $3 for 20 nuggets. Couldn't believe it.

          Nuggets for brekkie LOL

    • +1

I disagree, previous 4.95 deal is better.

  • When will "you" bring back Ocean Catch? Still salivate when I think about smashing it the last time, sometime in the oily noughties…

    • +1

Hopefully never, sounds disgusting! Joking, probably too much of a hassle to sell fish burgers.

      • Don Geditt; Maccas is Maccas does…

  • Do you ever eat at Maccas?

    Big Mac or Whopper?

    • Big Mac most definitely

    • +7

Not like I'm posting the 11 secret herbs and spices or anything.. hang on

  • Good post here OP, don't be bullied into keeping quiet

    • +2

I'm not saying anything secret/private or anything, nor saying anything bad about the company so

  • +1

Very low carb, normal protein, high fat is a craze sweeping the nation. Well, not really, but it has a small and dedicated following.

Any plans for HJ to cater to that?

    • keto?

      • +1

        Keto.

    • +2

I get the 2 bacon deluxe burgers for 6.95. Throw the buns and then flip one of the burgers patties to make each one a meatwich.

I do this because I get blank looks when order without the bun. Is there an easier/cheaper way to order something like this? Individual patties?

      • +1

mos burger has bugers that have lettuce as the buns and another also uses two halfs of a tomato as buns

        • Thanks, will look out for it. Although I'd imagine Perth will be one of the last to get something like this.

      • Food ?????

      • +1

Nah the patties are like $2 each so by the time you add cheese and the like.. cheaper your way mate

  • +1

Is there really a secret menu?

    • +1

      Nah no secret menu

  • How much is the pay?

    • Won't disclose but it's not too bad

      • +4

        so in other words poor
I know friends who earnt 2x at maccas compared to HJ's with better hours
        maybe franchise vs Corporate

        • +2

As an ex employee franchise vs corporate makes a huge difference.

        • @shanakatak:

          Could not agree more

        • +2

@shanakatak: Which one pays more? It isn't clear from your statement.

        • @moo: I too am wondering…. don't leave us hanging! :P

        • +2

It varies but generally from what I've seen corporate.

      • store my son worked at a few years back didnt pay any penalty rates, do you get penalty rates now?

    • According to Payscale, it looks like ~$18 is the regular rate and ~$23 if you're an assistant manager.

  • +1

What meal/combination of items should I order that's the best in terms of value and calories? i.e not too pricey and a good feed.

What should people be ordering at HJ?

What can we do to make your lives easier? e.g during busy times when you're getting hammered with orders, what should people be doing?

    Any stories to tell?

    • +2

I'll get back to you in the first one

To make our lives easier, clearly say (for example)

I want a small Whopper cheese meal with no pickles heavy onion Fanta for the drink

      Rather than

I want a whopper no pickles no onion with cheese Fanta for the drink oh in a small meal

Because a single burger and Burger meal are different buttons.
Also please, for example, don't order a huge order then say "oh on that first meal I want x" because our register system simply doesn't work cleanly like that.

Stories? Not really, doing $100 orders are pretty special. I love my regular customers thought, pretty much know them my name and know their orders off my heart :)

  • How clean is the food preparation? Any 'extra ingredients' for disgruntled customers?

    • +1

Food prep is very clean, no way would we interfere with a customer's food.

  • When will you bring back the chicken crunch burger?

    • I don't know, don't think so but want it back :'(

  • +1

Every time I get a whopper, I lift up the bun and I see the patty has theses bits that don't seem to form part of the patty. They kind of look like fat, can anyone explain or relate?

    • Probably from the meat (flame griller) broiler

    • If they are small greyish blob type things, that look kinda viscous and often sit on top or on the side, then it is actually bits of cooked blood. I notice it when I cook my own patties that the blood drains out, hits the grill and congeals.

  • What are all the things you can win on the Hungry Jacks Shake n Win app?

Is there still BOGOF Bacon Deluxe?

    • +1

Gee not sure on all the stuff, but things like
      Free reg frzn coke
      Free med chips
      Free soft serve cones
      $2 storm
$3.50(?) BBQ cheeseburger and small shake
      $1 BBQ cheeseburger
      $3 xtra long classic
      $3 bacon deluxe
      And during brekky
      Free large OJ
      Free med coffee

      • what time is brekky shake win app finish? 10:30 or 11am?

        • Brekky finishes at 11 am so I'm guessing then

  • +1

I once complained via the HJ website about the quality of food bought my partner and i bought at the bayswater, vic store. They asked the date and time we purchased, and I was shocked to get a response that they reviewed CCTV footage and claimed we ate in and seemed to enjoy the meal before I left with my wife and they could see no issues. I wrote back absolutely firstly to say i was stunned that they used CCTV in that manner, and secondly, whoever it was they saw were definetly not us, as my partner is male (same sex relationship) and def not my wife!. To which i just got more sarcastic replies and i vowed never to go back to that store and actually went straight to maroondah council and reported them to the health department, and I heard later there had apparently been numerous breaches. This was some years ago now, but there seemed to be no way of escalating the complaint within HJ's and the person (district manager?) who responded via the website knew full well by his smug comments. What is the procedure these days for complaint in this regard, and if they behave in a similair way who do you speak to who will take you seriously? (I'm well aware how bizare the above is, but it is all true!)

    • Jeepers, well for us as long as you have the receipt and contact the store within a couple of days via phone it is all good.
Sorry for that bad experience !
