Hungry Jack's General Discussion and AMA

Hi world,
I am an employee of Hungry Jack's.
Oh cool you say, but it seems like we may be one of OzBargain's favourite fast food stores!

I always get questions asked in comments or PM'ed to me, so why not just ask any queries you have below?
I'll also keep you guys updated on any new things we have coming up :)

stop using the top and bottom slice of the tomato… nobody wants to eat that

    • +1

They shouldn't use it as is meant to be chucked out then cutting them up

    • +1

Bring it to head office, not OP.

  • A week ago I ordered a meal that came with a free survey cheeseburger. I didn't have the cheeseburger until I decided to have it as a snack the next day. I bit into it and there was a toothpick inside! I told my coworker who sits next to me and he told me that they use toothpicks to mark custom made items before giving them to customers. I did notice there was a mayonnaise in the burger but I just accepted that they may have given me the wrong item and accepted it. Today I got another survey cheeseburger and this one also had mayonnaise!

    Questions:

    • Is there any truth to the use of toothpicks to mark custom items?
    • Are cheeseburgers supposed to contain mayonnaise?
    • 1) Toothpicks? No way! Custom items are marked on the wrapper or clam shell box.
      2) You said it was the free survey cheeseburger? With the myhjexperience.com.au survey you receive a BBQ cheeseburger. Bun/patty/cheese/BBQ sauce/mayo.

      • +1

Thanks. I guess someone really didn't like people who get free food.

  • Considering Hungry Jacks buy in bulk how much profit would they make on a burger meal. Also how do Hungry Jacks produce the coke ? Is it powder that they just add water to ?

    • It's comes in boxes as syrup concentrate.

    • Erm I'm not entirely sure on the profits and that sorry mate.
There soft drink & frozen drinks come in boxes of syrup as our friend said :)

Do Hungry Jacks ever intend on serving food that's edible?

    • -1

Their burgers used to rock, nowadays coz of being cheap you are lucky they don't suck

    • I'm sorry :'(

  • Ex HJ worker here. A long time ago, in a galaxy far away…

Have you ever met "Jack"? What's he like these days?

What's the worst accident you've seen in the store?

Do you have visibility of the mystery shopper challenge? I am assuming they still do it! What is the worst score received by your store?

    • 1) I haven't met 'Jack', but he came to our store a few hours after I finished once. My crew mates said he was an absolute legend!

      2) We haven't had any thank God but the worst thing that's happened around our store was a car t-boned a parked car full on :s

      3) I literally have no clue, I'm guessing if we had it our managers would tell us but they haven't
      :)

  • Would Hungry Jacks ever bring chicken/turkey patty or sausage for breakfast menu?

    Thank you.

    • +1

I'm not sure mate, unlike the traditional Maccas we do have the full menu available 24/7 so you could try your luck asking for a chicken Royale on a muffin?
Hope that answers your q :)

  • What is in the Milkshakes and Icecream as I have heard its not all what it appears.

    • +1

All we do is put a bag of liquid shake or sundae mix in the machine and it deals with the rest. Trust me, it's not this pink sludge people thought Maccas' was

      • I thought the pink sludge was their McNuggets… lol

Btw, IIRC there is a deluxe shake that isn't on the menu… its basically the same as a milkshake except it has sundae sauces on the side of the cup and wiped cream.

        • Yeah the deluxe shake is still on the menu

  • Is it true you stopped being able to serve tubs of mayo because someone complained they got food poisoning from eating some once, as it was a health hazard to have the mayo given in a form that could easily suffer cross contamination?

Or did they just realise how much money hey were losing from giving away free sauces as I find the last few times I did go, they are a lot less liberal with just giving handfuls of whatever dipping sauces you ask for?

(Mcdonald's still give Big McSauce and Mc Chicken in tubs (but you do pay).

    • We still have the tubs of mayo or ranch, 50c and $1 respectively. We use the small sundae lids and "pacman" a small soft drink lid in there.
We charge 30c for tubs of the prepacked sauce, unless you buy nuggets or onion rings which you get 1 free (per 6 nugs or 1 O.R)

      • +1

hmmm this could tempt me to come back and try again…was not the case a year or so ago.

My old favorite OzB bargain meal was go to HJ's get 2 whoppers with cheese heavy mayo angry onions for $6.75 and a tub of Mayo, plus what ever I won on Shake an win then go past Maccas and order 5+ $1 small fires from the loose change menu. A very large satisfying meal if you don't drink soft drink for approx $11.95 :)

        • +7

          Nice try hr 😉

        • +1

          Go away hr

        • @Food: Lol at least he was honest and put the associated tag

        • @ProjectZero: two brand new accounts just commenting on this, hmm

        • @Zarcady:

Hey, you're that guy who was stranded overseas! (I kid, I kid)

        • +1

@silverrat23: Slept at burger King, right?

          Ayeeee

        • @Food:

          Yep.

          AYEEEEEE!

        • @silverrat23: brother from another mother

        • the Australia Fair store charges extra if you want more mayo on the chicken crunch burger and what ever the cheap chicken burger is called (royale?)

        • @PVA: really? Hmm it may be a franchise and they've chosen to do that.

        • @Food:
could be , owner was a real tight ass and would try to repair things himself. took about two weeks to replace the coffee machine that failed - yep the store had no coffee for that long.
also had no beef products for 2 days as the flame grill broke down.
these examples were a while back, havent gone there for a long time now.

I am betting Maccas wouldnt allow it and a repair tech would attend within an hour or two.

        • @PVA: jeepers :s

        • +1

@Food: ayyyeee burger king rocks haha.

      • You get a dipping sauce with nuggets? Last time ordred the nuggets/chips deal……no dipping sauce.

        • Ask for what ever sauce you want and they give you one tub

        • @Food: you have to ask for it….or do they offer?

        • @albanyson: Well it is called a 'replacement order'. I thought it'd standard but that's a question for a manager

  • How long have you worked at HJs for?

    • Year or so

  • +3

Have to say this is a good ama thread…. straight from the serving floor and no fuss.

Man i feel like a bacon deluxe but few years ago i got sick from eating the stuff and havent been back, fo some reason the memory of being sick makes me just pass on it…. not put off just meh about the food but my wife thinks that HJ has stepped up especially with the chips.

    • +1

      Thanks mate,
Come back and try us, use a voucher and Bob's your uncle!

      • Bob was my uncle but now is my aunt…. thats for another thread.

Had a go at convincing my wife for some lunch today at HJ but i believe outback steak house is it.

        • Oh well always tomorrow:D

        • @Food: luck had it… the steakhouse was closed and HJ was it.

        • @Hotkolbas: Ooohhh, how as it?

        • +2

@Food: pretty good. Chips definitely a big plus imo and the firey bloody big burger was filling and not greasy.

  • Do you guys still make the angry onions?

How much extra does it cost to swap out the fries for angry onions?

Do you guys have a larger serving for them? They seem to be the same size no matter what size I order for the meal, kinda feel like I'm getting ripped off…

P.S. Not sure if you noticed… but i love those angry onions XD

    • Angry onions, yucky ahah I don't like them but that's my opinion.
Unsure how extra it is but it depends on the size of them.
They come in small, medium and large so.

    • I love Angry Onions. My butt hole does not. Sometimes I get them in place of fries or as an extra. Large is the only way.

I have asked them (in store) to cook fresh ones before and they did. They were nice about it but obviously there was some eye roll. But come on I don't want old dried up crusty shit. You can hide crusty shit angry onions in a burger where there are other ingredients to disguise it but if someone orders AO as a side then they have to be fresh.

      • +1

The one I go to always makes them fresh since I dont think many people get them… the problem is, even when I ask for large it looks like the small box cartons they use for onion rings.

    • You can get them for 50c extra i think as a burger topping.

  • Are you going to add more staffs to cut the waiting line? On the busy outlets of course

    • Depends on the labour vs sales mate.

  • Are you allowed to eat lunch at the McDonald next to your HJ?

    • We don't have a Maccas next door 😛

      • +1

If there was a Maccas (or KFC), would you?

        • +1

          Probably

        • -1

          @Food: TRAITOR!

  • +1

Will HJ's ever do like Maccas and make the breakfast menu all day?

Why did HJ's stop doing the medium coffee for $2.50?

    • It'll be a hell of a task doing all day brekky, I doubt we will.

It was a promo unfortunately mate :(

    • Probably because they 'improved' their coffee. Tell me have you had their new coffee and what did you think? I tried it once so far and it was worse than their old coffee which means it's basically comes from the gutter. I looked on FB and there were a lot of complaints saying similar.

Also their large size coffee is smaller than Maccas McCafe by about 100g not sure about Maccas Pronto.

I'd also love to be able to get a Wrap n Cap for lunch instead of breakfast only.

  • +1

Why did the Hungry Jacks in one of the shopping centers I went to say that they don't do the Fiery Angus and that I had to go to an actual Hungry Jacks store?
I went to another HJ in a different shopping center and they said they do sell the Fiery Angus…

    • +2

I believe the Angus burgers are opt-in only if your store wants to do them.
In your case, the shopping centre one is probably too busy to do the Angus burgers because they take a lot of care and effort to make.

  • +1

Can I order an Angry Veggie Whopper and not cause trouble? Always jealous of that thing.

    • +2

Yeah you should be able to do that with no hassles!

  • what is in your new chips that make me feel like i'm about to have a heart attack the same night while sleeping?

    • I don't know 😭

    • +1

      MSG in the salt.

  • +2

    always wanting to ask:
can i use expired coupon during non-promotional period? i.e. no deal during 1th Aug - 15th Aug, can i use coupon expired on 25th July??

    • +2

Yes you can, but if you're using a voucher that has discontinued items e.g. chicken crunch then it doesn't work. Also some items on the vouchers have updated prices so just be aware of that.

    • +2

Yeah they're still on the system so should be fine

      • I tried ordering the double small whopper meal outside of the voucher dates and refused.
        ??
        Is that a promotion?
Are all vouchers capable of being used at any time?

        Edit. Voucher=coupon

        • Technically the voucher "is expired" and they can refuse

Probably just whinging here to noone in particular, but why do the Hungry Jacks ads suck so much?? The ads (like the ones we're forced to watch on Youtube) are painful to sit through. Like when DopeyF**kwit says to SomeStupidWanker "I guess the burgers ARE better at Hungry Jacks!" and they all laugh like it was actually funny. And they always seem to be shot and cast like they're on an episode of Home & Away

At least the McDonalds/Dominos/Pizza Hut/KFC ones aren't cringeworthy!

    So my question is……………….uh……………………..hmmmmm……………..

…Do the staff ALSO think the ads suck?

    • They suit the purpose so yeah. I have no opinion

    • I thought the old Angry Angus ad was great. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gC66S9iEJmA

Loved that burger. Sure wasn't good for you though.

      • +1

Fair call, that's a good one

        • Ironically it's uploaded by Mumbrella for a "Mumbrella Readers Choice Awards turkey of the year" nomination… ie. they (or the readers) think it's a shit ad.

I like the dig at the Grand Angus from Maccas.. alas all 3 burger Grand, Mighty and Angry are gone.

    • -1

The ads (like the ones we're forced to watch on Youtube) are painful to sit through

      Solution:
      1. download google chrome
      2. open chrome, go google.com, search google "chrome extension ublock"
      3. click first result, and click add to chrome
      4. Restart computer
      5. Voila…. no more ads on youtube!

      You're Welcome.

  • can you photo copy vouchers and use them??

    • +6

      Phone is fine

    • But yes you can

  • Why do I keep constantly getting (profanity) over with my order?

Every time I order double whopper cheese meal they always forget the (profanity) cheese…

    • I don't know 😭 easy enough to go back and get it replaced or ring up??

      • Yeah I'll drive back after I've left the drive tru, picked up my gf then went home to have some lunch….

Ringing up does nothing, they don't give a shit when they already have your money.

      • +1

Confirmed. Phoning does squat. I was TD I should have come in and complaiend….except the reason you drive through is to stay in the car and keep driving home as soon as you have your meal. Out of spite, I drove back down to the store. Phoning does nothing.

        • Sorry for that.
At our store as long as we can confirm that you actually did place the order then it'll be up to you when you want a replacement

        • You know what though. I gave feed back a few years ago to HJ to their little online 'feedback club' thing. I said oi why are you giving me a coffee and little sachets of sugar. Put the sugar in the coffee.. what's the point of going through a drive through to get coffee then having to either pull over, wait until you get to your destination or worse stop in the D-thru and put sugar in your boiling hot coffee and hope you don't spill it in your vehicle. I think at time Maccas was putting sugar in drinks and I mentioned the same. It'd be like getting a burger and adding your own sauce.

As you say, the whole point of being in the drive through it convenience and also on the go consumption especially with a drink.

And the next time I went to HJ and every time after that, the sugar was already in my coffee. I like to think it was my feedback. I've had a lot of such coincidences or non coincidences over the years where I've given feedback and it seems like processes changed.

Obviously not the same kind of feedback but thought I'd share anyway.

  • +1

Have you nailed the burger wrapping technique?
I tend to unwrap and rewrap ones ive purchased to maintain my technique even after all these years since hjs

    • Ahah it's a fine art, isn't it.
Well I'm mainly front only but I've made the burgers a few times and it's pretty easy unless you're wrapping a double Aussie burger aha.
That half wrap on the Angus burgers thought, jeepers it takes a lot of practice

      • +1

Haha it is indeed grats on front of house!
They were definitely the most complex wrap think we ende up with boxes for them though.

Do you guys have an employee ranking system based on experience?
Like we had bronze silver gold

  • +2

Are any of your ingredients made in China? In particular the ketchup? As I know the Maccas ketchup is. Cheers

    • The ketchup packets are Heinz, unsure on the burger making stuff but would assume it is Heinz too. Otherwise I'm not sure 😁

  • Just to be transparent.

We have been contacted by Hungry Jack in regards to some of the information posted here. They believe there is information shared here that shouldn't be public as well as some misleading or false comments. We have as it stands removed 2 comments from the OP in regards to products they will be releasing shortly as this is information we do not believe should be shared, just like we don't share the Woolworths catalogues until they are made public.

We are continuing our discussions with Hungry Jacks and hopefully we can get them to clear up some of the statements.

    • -6

I definitely agree -JEDI training and announcements should be for yourself and not for the public eyes. I've been a longtime lurker because I'm more of a reader rather than a poster but when I saw that statement about ranch and mayo sauce being sold in-store I created an account to rectify that false statement. But yeah, call me 'hr' if that's what you think.
