How would this compare to the Xiaomi Note 3 Pro?

    • +5

the xiaomi is superior in spec, but this may have slightly better build quality

      • +10

Considering I've dropped my Note3Pro a few times on concrete (without a case because I'm hardcore) and it hardly got a scratch, I'd say the build quality is pretty good.

        • +5

Mine was run over and left on the road for an hour (without a case because I'm dumb) and still works fine

        • +15

          @taylorn8r:

Rosie O'Donnell sat on mine and it still works fine*.

*I don't actually own this phone.

        • +1

@taylorn8r: Ran it over with the 4WD 10 times forwards and backwards, no case obviously because I'm manly.

        • +2

Mine dropped out of my pocket while skydiving. It fell into an old apartment block that was being explosively demolished. Got a few scratches on it obviously.

@Wallyt99: I had the Mars Rover launch it to earth and its still works, although had some burn marks from it's entry into the earth atmosphere.

What did you think it was or? Bargains? Ha!

        • @PainToad:

Rosie O'Donnell sat on mine and it still works fine.

Not possible. Rosie's most outstanding genius comment? "Since when can fire melt steel".

  • +7

Why a HD screen in 2016 ( even bargain bin phones have full HD nowadays ) The Xiaomi RNP3 has fantastic build quality and good performance ( Snapdragon processor ) for cheaper outright , sigh

I understand the warranty etc etc , but the face value , sigh

    • +2

I'd imagine battery, and gaming performance.

      • +2

Bigger battery for RN3 and processor blows the Mediatek one on the Oppo out of the water. Safe for now. Unless one wants rose gold.

        • Oh I agree, but that wasn't the question.

        • I've had the RN3 pro for a few months now and battery life has gone down a lot (even with taking care of how I charge it etc).

        • +1

@Clinton: that's not the battery diminishing, its just as you install more apps, more start doing background stuff and using processor cycles—>battery usage

        • +1

@Clinton:i have found the same thing. And it's not the installation of extra apps. My missus has this and doesn't even know how to install apps. Also i have rooted it and stopped all unnecessary apps from booting.

        • @Clinton: Check the apps you've installed. I installed Contest of Champions, ahd the battery went down like crazy!

Check the battery saver app to pinpoint the apps that are chewing up battery. The data saver app is good one to use as well. If it's an app that's using lots of data, it's doing lots of stuff in the background that's killing your battery.

If that doesn't work, factory reset and start from scratch.

From factory reset, with no added apps, see if you can last 2 days. That was my benchmark when I first used it.

        • @coolhand:

I haven't installed any apps since the first day after I installed everything. Its been a gradual decrease in battery performance. I've gone in and unchecked things to run in the background in settings/sync is off/gps etc are off. Pretty sure it's just the battery degradation. I've had it with other phones before but just nowhere near as fast.

        • @Clinton: it's disturbing to read this since I just got one too. Guess flashing to CM is an option down the line. I expect this phone to at least last a year.

        • +1

@Clinton: Hi mate , I'm surprised with your experience; Missus has this and it is delivering 2 day battery life consistently , despite using the phone a lot …

        • +1

@Clinton: It isn't battery degradation it's Android falling apart faster than Windows XP and then sucking due to all the odd, random quirks it starts demonstrating.

        • For the first month or so battery life was excellent and i'd get 2 days but now im lucky to get a day. I've updated using the updater tool etc as well. Might try a full reset of the phone and try another ROM but tbh i'm not too hopeful.

        • @Clinton: That's a bummer .. I'll try checking XDA when I hit home to see if there is a fix for this and post an updae ( if i find anything meaningful )

    • Because it's cheaper and you can barely tell the difference.

      • +1

Not sure about barely telling the difference as this is a 5.5 inch device and I've seen HD displays on 5.5 inch to be pretty pixelated

  • +5

for local stock i didnt think its bad, the kind you can grab off the shelf with warranty without waiting for potentially weeks from overseas appeals to alot of folks. it is a new chip but midrange at best however. the optus locked part is also annoying but could try ask for unlock.

  • Pity they EOL'd Oppo F1 @ 199

  • How is the camera compare with LG G4 or G5? Will it works with Coles Optus prepaid?

    It said :

    "THE WONDER OF NIGHT

The OPPO F1s features a 13 MP rear camera with a 1/3.06 inch sensor maximises light sensitivity, making for wonderful night-time performance."

    • +7

LG G4 camera is awesome, IF the phone is working.

      • +2

Yeah, the Camera is working just the Phone is not.

      • +1

Yeah.. "if" the phone is working. Bootloop…

      • whats wrong with g4? i have been using this phone for about 1 yr, havent seen any issues except sometime its just slow!

        • +1

That's what I was thinking… Until my LG G4 bootlooped - conveniently a few days after 12 month warranty expired. Backup your phone while you can.

        • @JiGa: will do tonight

    • +1

As if compare this nugget to the G4, you cray cray?
G4 camera tromps all even this new Pixel whatayacall it phone.

      • +1

Wish my G3 was any good then :( Pretty awful camera when I compare to my sisters iPhone 6.

      • So in that case it is a NO compare the camera with G4, can we consider it is a false advertisement.

  • +2

This can be a replacement for the wife's phone when she completely destroys the S7 (getting there) lol.

  • Will this work with a vaya sim?

    • Can't confirm, but from experience with other VNO SIMs, if Vaya is using the Optus network, then yes, it will work on Optus-locked phones.

Try your SIM on someone's phone that is locked to Optus. See if that works.

      • +2

Got an Alcatel pop 4 a few months ago optus locked. Can confirm it works with Vaya SIM which I'm on.

  • +1

The free selfie sticks makes the deal!

  • +2

If it only had NFC otherwise this looks like a good deal

  • Is it dual sim?

    • +1

      Not dual sim:

Oppo has advised that Australia won't be getting the Dual SIM variant of the F1s. However, we expect it to be available on grey import.

      • not true, I had confirmation from oppo the F1S takes dual sim + memory card and the sale from JB HiFi also confirmed this.

However not sure if it's any different from the Optus Prepaid. Can anyone confirm if the Optus F1S prepaid are dual sim or not??

        • Hmmm okay, some conflicting info from different sources. You'd think JB would have AU stock. The AU Oppo website says:

The F1s brings users one 4G SIM slots supporting top speeds of up to 150 Mbps and an additional memory card slot to expand storage by up to 128 GB

Compared to the Indian site for example which says:

The F1s brings users two 4G sim slots.

Hopefully Oppo knew you were talking about the Australian version?

The info prior also was from PC World Review which was from Oppo also:

[Edit: Since publishing, Oppo has advised that Australia won't be getting the Dual SIM variant of the F1s. However, we expect it to be available on grey import. We've knocked the value score down a little, but everything else we have said still stands]

Might be best to check in store at Optus, nothing on the website indicates it could be. Dual sim is standby and not active going by the GSM info for those phones that have it.

  • I bought the regular Oppo F1 a few months ago when my Huawei g526 carked it. Best phone I've ever had, and I'll be sticking with this brand for a long long time :)

    • +10

I guess you could say that was a great Oppotunity to try them out.

      • -1

The OP POsitively made a great post.

      • Well played!!

    • Best phone compares with Huawei g526?

    • Coming from a g526 I'm not surprised. With that said I've recommended the F1 to a few people and they all rate it.

      • I should rephrase that to 'best phone I've ever tried'. Anyone who buys Oppo will not be disappointed :)

  • why are we comparing this to the Xiaomi Note 3 instead of the newer Note 4 Pro? Thats I was looking to get before I saw this deal

    • +2

Because IMO the 3 is better

    • +1

And there's no Global version of the Note 4 Pro (yet).

    • How so morgs640? The key difference as I see it being that the newer
Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 Pro has a 64GB ROM and Android 6. And it is tagged as being the global version.

The Oppo's ready availability and local 24 month warranty certainly has some appeal though.

  • -3

btw the unlocked ones on ebay for $287.20 are only 16gb not the 32gb versions

    • Where are you seeing that? 32GB storage is mentioned on each listing more than once. I can't see 16GB anywhere:

      Unlocked | 32GB Storage | 3GB Ram | 5.5" Screen Size | Back Camera 13MP F/2.2 | Front Camera 16MP F/2.0

      Also I don't believe there is a 16GB model, only 32GB model.

  • +1

I have the oppo f1 very good phone for the money.Build quality is top notch very quick phone I was dubious coming from samsung phones but the oppo never fails great battery always get updates from oppo dont hesitate buy the oppo you want regret, for the money cant be beaten

    • This phone is launching with ANdroid 5.1 which was launched January last year , so not sure how the updates thing will work and if Optus will even bother to release the updates etc ( believe the phone is bootloader locked , but not sure ) . .

      • Check Xiaomi forums most of Xiaomi phones are still on 4.2, 5 or 5.1 and users are complaining as they had promised last year to release 6 but still those firmwares are getting minor updates.

        • Yes you are right and many Xiaomi phones only get MIUI updates and it's a shame .. Also in this particular comment I'm not comparing them both as both are bad ( RNP3 did get marshmallow I believe though ) , while I did in the post above for value for money proposition :)

  • Better to wait for Nexus 5X 32Gb to dropped to around $300 again or less DWI since the Pixel release or Moto 4G Plus for $328 The Good Guys with 2x$25 coupons ?

    • No, the global ones tend to have Snapdragon processor.

Edit: Nvm, maybe the global version for Note 4 this time isn't gonna use SD? Now I have no idea…

      • +1

The difference is that it comes preinstalled with the "global" ROM. Same hardware.
Is there even a "Pro" version of the Redmi Note 4? The Pro version of the Redmi Note 3 had the Snapdragon, then they eventually made the SE/"Kate"/Taiwan/Global version.

        • Pro version of the RN3 with Snapdragon came out a while after the original Chinese release, which is what I assumed was the global hardware variant. I'm hoping they make an SD version of the RN4 too…

  • I'm not seeing how this is a bargain…$259 is the normal price for the Optus Prepaid version of the F1s.

  • "OPPO is offering their new F1s 3/32GB phone in steel grey through Optus for a special offer of $259 + a free selfie stick, instead of the usual $348."

ummmm no they are not. $259 is the STANDARD OPTUS PRICE.

    You're comparing a UNLOCKED phone to a LOCKED phone… This isn't a deal.

    • +2

      It's the selfie stick.

      • selfie stick has been part of the standard online order for ages from Optus. The Oppo F1 came with the selfie stick too. So nothing new here for the Oppo F1S.

  • How is this compared to Samsung Galaxy s5? My wife's SGS5 is 2.5 years old and on its last leg.

  • +1

    16mp front facing camera
    pinhole lens

That can't be taking any decent pictures can it?

  • I assume that because this stock is coming from Optus that the handset supports Band 28? Do the imported handsets support Band 28, or is this an Australian specific variant?

And why is this using such an old build of Android, considering this is a recently released handset? Isn't Android up to version 7ish?

    • +1

I'm sure the handsets are fully compatible with all Optus bands, Optus would certainly ensure that.

Yeah running Android 5.1 is disappointing. From what I read, it was said that it was probably to keep costs down as they have their own Colour OS to develop on top and also their Colour OS does a lot of what is in Marshmallow. I think that would put a lot of people off, more so than no NFC. A good value phone for those not so concerned with having the latest OS or to keep while you wait for something else, otherwise you might be better paying a little extra and getting a Moto G4 Plus or a Nexus 5x if you wanted NFC.

      • Thanks for the informative response. Much appreciated. I assume you need NFC in order to use Android pay?

        • +2

Yes that's correct. I assume a lot of people like me didn't really care about NFC until Android Pay became available, now it's handy to have.

        • @hamza23: A couple more more very quick question. I am new to the world of Android.

          1. Are there any apps that require a higher version of Android?

          2. Does Android 5.1 support the "OK Google" feature. ( I think that is called Google Now )

        • +1

          @dechah:

I wouldn't call myself an expert, just a casual user who has only been on Android for a year.

          (1) I recently went from Android 5.1 (Lollipop) to Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) and there wasn't any app that I couldn't run on Android 5.1. The majority of Android users are on 5.1 or less so it'd be unlikely for any developer to make their app requirement Android 6 or higher as most wouldn't be able to use it - maybe someone knows of such an app that might require something in Android 6 but not 5.1; however the difference between Android 5.1 and 6.0 also isn't much.

Did a google search and found As of May only 7.5% of Android users were on Android 6.0 (Marshmallow), the other 92.5% were on Android 5.1 (Lollypop) or lower (Kit Kat 4.4, Jelly Bean 4.1, Ice Cream Sandiich 4.0 etc). Android version history.

          (2) Yeah Google Now is listed as: "Available on all devices with Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) or higher." For reference Android 4.1 came out July 2012.

Not to say Oppo won't release Android 6 or 7, just their reputation is very slow updates and the fact they released this phone with 5.1 when 7 is starting to come out.

        • +1

@hamza23: Thanks again mate. Greatly appreciated. I just ordered one. It comes Friday

        • @dechah:

No probs, glad to help. Hope it all goes well.

        • +2

          @hamza23:

There is a very key difference between Marshmallow and all previous versions of Android. A "pure" implementation of MM treats add on SD memory as internal memory, so you don't need to move apps over from internal to SD all the time. Optionally, you can elect to leave SD as "Portable Memory". The implication of this for users with 8 GB or 16GB phones is enormous - a previously unusable phone becomes quite viable again.

Not all non-Google implementations of MM have kept this option. A few Samsung models have disabled it, presumably because Samsung want to sell higher specced phones. Motorola has completely implemented it, so a Moto G can have a huge "internal" memory if you configure it that way. I don't have a list of which makers have implemented or disabled it, I only know about Samsung Motorola and Nexus phones. (And presumably Pixel implements it too).

        • @Gershom: Thanks mate, yes I noticed this after playing with the new handset today. My daughter has her SD memory integrated into the phone's memory, whereas the Oppo keeps them as separate storage.

  • Does this phone have a software update to android 6.0?

    • +1

No it's on 5.1 and I wouldn't hold your breath for Android 6.0 anytime soon.

      • +1

Can I ask if there were any major advantages from 5.1 to 6?
I was gonna jump on getting one of these until a few people mentioned it so I wasn't sure about it now haha.

        • +1

Looks wise not much difference between 5.1 to 6, most of the changes are battery life and performance type stuff. I think the major change would be Doze which decreases your battery use when your phone is idle. It also has google now on tap which I don't really use but you can access google now from any screen and the ability to change individual permissions in apps. There are also a number of changes to settings and other smaller things. If you google android 5.1 to 6 there would probably be a full list. Having said that I read that this OPPO F1s has a lot of Marshmallow features added over the top of the operating system by Oppo from this article:

The V3.0.0.i ROM in the Oppo F1s is still based on Android 5.1 Lollipop meaning you don't get any of Google's more recent platform improvements, like runtime permissions or the battery-friendly Dozing feature.

However, you might not miss those particular two all that much, since Color OS does offer alternatives of its own. You can't really micro-manage permissions, but you can get notifications when an app wants access to something more sensitive and there is an excellent level of notification control on a per-app basis. As for process management, it is really powerful indeed. You can easily limit the background activity of almost every third-party app and save on battery, just be careful with messengers.

      • Also, this will sound dumb but I'm able to log into my Google account and download the apps I have on my Samsung Galaxy?

        • Not dumb. Yes that is easy, when you login to your Google account on your new phone and go to the Google Play Store, then 'my apps' and 'all' your previously downloaded apps on prior devices will all be there, just a matter of downloading again.

        • @hamza23:
Thanks alot for your help :>

          I'm still torn between this, the LG G3 and LG G4 haha D;

      • bought it anyway, great deal

  • +3

Just be careful, Optus one seems only do 900/2100 MHz, so telstra users may not be good for the optus one even if it is unlocked. The unlocked (not carrier branded) should do 850/900/2100 MHz. This happens to previous F1.

    • +2

I noticed that too. It wont work on Vodafone very well - it has no 850Mhz (Band 5) for their 4G. Also missing Band 1, also used by Voda. Here are the bands for Aussie carriers in 4G:-

2100Mhz (B1) – Telstra (a handful of sites), Optus (Tasmania), Vodafone
      1800Mhz (B3) – Telstra, Optus, Vodafone
      850Mhz (B5) – Vodafone
      2600Mhz (B7) – Telstra, Optus
900Mhz (B8) – Telstra (a handful of sites, utilises spectrum previously used by 2G)
      700Mhz (B28) – Telstra, Optus
      2300Mhz (B40) – Optus (Vivid wireless spectrum)

And here are the 4G bands on this phone - 700/1800/2300/2600 MHz. Unless you want to stay married to Optus I wouldn't touch it.

  • Damn I could have used the unlocked deal :(

Any other good deals on unlocked phones? Thanks!
