Pro-Tip: I am expecting 4K UHD players (and their $45 blu-ray discs) to drop in price as more products come to market, and leading into Xmas. If you dont already have one, consider getting a credit card with good price protection, so you can claim the price drops back. My Coles Mastercard (with price protection activated) allows me to claim back price drops of $10+ from the same retailer as original purchase, within 2 years.

What's the benefit of getting a sole-purpose 4k player over a video games console?

    • +1

Well for one Sony screwed up and didn't put a 4k Blu ray drive in either the PS4 Slim or the PS4 Pro
Of all people, Microsoft put one in their Xbox Slim and presumably next years Xbox Scorpio.

Also if you have a huge huge high quality TV, good eyesight, yes, a 4k blu ray will thrash a streaming version for quality.

    • Good question. And it depends on your needs.

There are several differences - but the biggest for me is lack of bitstream output - so if you have a home theatre AVR, especially a new model with Dolby Atmos (overhead speakers) or DTS-X, which is the best sound format included on most 4K UHD Blu-ray discs, an XboxOneS cannot pass that to your AVR (yet, maybe later with firmware update).

For those using TV speakers/soundbars, the lack of bitstream for Atmos/DTS-X is not such an issue.

Previously the Xbox One S was around $200 cheaper than the Samsung UHD player - but with this sale they are pretty similar in price.

Apart from the audio output options, I also found myself getting the Samsung too ($299 at Costco - signed up alone for it). The Xbox One S is ridiculously loud on the disc drive. Put me off entirely for using it as an all in one.

      • Yeah I read in some of those reviews that it can be very noisy. $299 is a great price. Unfortunately, CostCo is 1.5 hours drive away for me (plus a membership fee?)

I might just buy the Samsung from Good Guys retail store (as I cannot seem to click n collect via ebay) so I can get it before the weekend (installing 2 Atmos ceiling mount speakers on Saturday), and then claim price drops back via credit card.
I typically take screenshots of stuff Ive bought on sale, and then claim the lowest price. Good Guys did have the Samsung on sale in store about a month ago for $399. I can screenshot this eBay sale with the 20% off too. And wait to see how prices drop at Xmas. As long as the model doesnt go end of life before it goes on a good sale. Hopefully I see the $299 price from Good Guys at some point.

I baulk at paying $45 for a 4K blu-ray (but am willing to pay it for Deadpool!) - and hopefully by Xmas they have dropped to $20-ish so I can get some $$ back. I see some 4K ones are $20 already.

The 4k movies are included in JB Hifi sales such 20% off and bogof. Keep an eye out for those.

        • @Sage: ooh, how often do the buy 1 get 1 free offers come up?

        • @systmworks:
Rare, I believe a blanket BOGOF was once?

It's a shame it was so noisy, it has potential to be an exceptional all in one device, as it was originally intended years ago. Mind you its performance on apps (such as Plex) seems to be well behind other competitors too. Wish MS would really tidy it up a bit.

    • PlayBox usually has some sort of glaring compromise. Stupid controls, noisy. I went through this when blu-ray came out, using a PS3 to play movies. The trouble with the disc players is if you use them to stream off disk or network they sometimes don't want to play 'popular' files extensions (hello mkv…). Game machines are in the same boat (mkv, say hello to PS3…).

Go the 4k disk player but get one which lets you stream all sorts of files.
