      Places like STA Travel bulk purchase at wholesale rates and can then mark-up or discount as they see fit, while the actual airlines tend to sell at the retail rates.

      Oct and Nov are the off-season time worldwide. Expect to see more of these prices to anywhere. But Aug to Oct is summer holiday time in a lot of countries, so don't feel bad if you can't get a good price to Europe.

        Just too good to be true, hence the doubt!.

    Are those dates set in stone? Two weeks is a short trip for a 24hour flight :'(.

      Doubt there'll be too much for June/July because it's peak season + school holidays.

      Just by scanning online looks like you can't get too much sub $1200 from Sydney return. Even if you can it's typically with China southern or a less ideal airline.

      Brief look and I can see a few flights with Malaysian, Singapore or Air France for just over $1400

          @blighst: I looked at amsterdam to see if it would work out cheaper, but I wanted to fly out from melbourne to athens at the end of june and then back from amsterdam at the start of august.

          I don't want a super budget airline though so mainly looked at Qantas/Emirates, Etihad and to be fair I have looked at flights that are 22-30 hours in terms of spending that little bit more for a quicker arrival, but still the chepest I've seen is about $2100.

          I found one with Singapore and Aegean (Aegean only for the short connection to Athens from Heathrow)

          Fly out the 30th June 34 hr 55 min stopping in Singapore (6hr 35 min) and Heathrow (3hr 10)
          Fly back 4th of August from Amsterdam 21 hr 55 min stopping in Singapore (1hr 50 min)

          $1586 return through ifly.net.au - you can even tweak times to get a whole day in Singapore (arrive at 5am and leave at 9pm - where you can get some free cash for being in transit and get a free tour of singapore iirc as you are flying with Singapore Airlines)

          Flight Centre will beat them by $1 as they have an ABN if you prefer a more 'legit' travel agent:

          Return flight the same $1751.

          Lufthansa + Cathay are doing similar prices (I've spotted one for $1525 on 28th to 2nd) to Singapore however longer connections.

      Depending how long you want to stay there:

      Etihad are doing return flights for a bunch of dates throughout the school holidays. Best I can find is ~$1100 and a 24 hour trip both ways. Most dates are about the same price (even if you leave in March 1 week before breakup). All flights booked through STA.

      China Southern beat them on price for a few days but is a much longer flight on a less decent airline.
