Men, What Shampoo/Conditioner Do You Use?

I'm a dude. I use homebrand soap. It does the job and smells nice enough, but not too much.

My wife uses some fancy Shampoo (Probably made by the Kardashian's) with more fruit than a fruit market and enough oils to fuel a small country. Not to mention it costs an arm and a leg.

So lads. What Shampoo and conditioner do you use. Overall, I'd like it to be relatively cheap. I don't mind the smell as long as I don't become the office air-freshener.

I use whatever the wife buys…

Don't you like smelling like an orange?

    • +4

I like smelling like my girlfriend. ^_^

      • +19

So you like to smell like your right hand?

        • +12

          She smells fine down there.

But I was referring to her hair.

        • @Kangal:

After re-reading his comment, I change my stance… that was funny.
          I need coffee : \

    • +24

Hair? haha, yeah I remember that stuff.

      • +1

had the best chuckle at this comment, kudos!

    • -5

This whole thread is sexist. Why doesn't anybody care what shampoo women use? The patriarchy suppressing womens rights as usual.

  • +47

    What's conditioner?

    • +24

      lol

      • +5

So "lol" receives more upvotes than the actual joke? :/

That's it! I quit my OzBargain comedy career. >_<

  • +6

You buy shampoo? Most blokes I know just use shower gel.

Whatevers on half price special usually.

    • +8

Dish washing liquid is cheaper for OzBargainers

      • +2

        Have you tried that?

        • +2

          I did.
Its quite "coarse" …I don't think it's good for your hair in the long-run (especially sensitive hair types).

But overall, it was much better than I thought it would be.

  • +5

I use Dove Men+ Shampoo for Dry Hair.

    • +63

Nah mate, it's easier just to shampoo with wet hair.

      • Haha, you're funny. But I meant I have dry hair

  • +16

Tresemme. I stock up when its half price.

    • keep to your own store pal, i take it straight off the palette at my shop.

      • +1

Should be ok for a while Mr Snake. Last time I was in the UK I bought half a suitcase home.

  • I asked my hairdresser's boss who owns the salon what the difference between mens and womens shampoo is. His reply male shampoo is more concentrated. I buy expensive crap but I use tiny amounts. Does it make a difference … no.

  • +1

    American Crew

or what ever the wife uses, sometimes.

    • Yeah that's what I use.

      • +1

its way too expensive but I have to admit it works.
I had a little dry scalp, didnt matter what brand I used it would always be flaky. hair dresser said try ameican crew, and like you say use a little, the flakiness went away.
hair dresser said supermarket brands (head and shoulders etc) will clear the problem but not fix it.. and they were right, american crew fixed it.

I'm not naive, I know they try to sell you stuff, but this worked for me.

  • +4

ALDI anti dandruff shampoo. Does the same thing as Head 'n Shoulders but is almost 1/3 the price and not made overseas.

    • +6

It's such a stupid name for the ripoff brand, Head Strong

      • +3

The name is a bit ridiculous, but the product is good.

        • I can't judge myself, so I might give it a try!

    • Thanks for the tip. Personally I love the head and shoulders with the the menthol or eucalyptus or whatever - it feels nice on your scalp. It's about $12/L, but a litre lasts me ages.

  • +3

My SO insists on buying cleaning products with "Men's" on them. Deep down I know they are the same thing as the regular stuff…just more expensive sometime..

Hun, if you are reading this..stop!

    • +6

checkout did a thing on it. The times I've tried them I found them funny, because its clear the package was designed by someone who had no idea what they where supposed to write. I remember it said something like, "Dirty knees, grass stains on white pants, a cold beer, men like it there way"
This is supposed to sell shampoo? Of course, we all know men generally don't buy shampoo, their women do, just like yours has, and generally speaking women have no idea what men like. So you've got Men's products, designed by other men trying to appeal to a woman's misconceived opinion of her partner/son, being bought by women for their men.

I use regular Dove shampoo because a) it doesn't irritate my scalp and b) it was cheap. Mainly b if I'm being honest. I bought a cupboard full 2 years ago and I'm still going through it.

I don't give two shits about men's brand stuff because the only thing less masculine than a man who is really into cosmetics, is a man so insecure that he can't use anything not specifically marked as "for men"

Then again, I am not a man I am a squid, so what would I know.

      • Just to clarify, my SO is a he. He buys his own cleaning products. I honestly think he buys the "men's" stuff because there aren't a lot out there compared to the regular stuff, hence he doesn't have to think about what he wants, what scents to get. Might be just a convenience thing.

        • +1

My mistake, thought banana as a username was something to do with phallic boasting.

You're probably right there, a significant portion will buy based on that even if it costs more for the same thing, same as how drug companies are able to charge extra for pain relief meds by advertising it as "period pain" or "arthritis" even though the active ingredient is all the same.

    • +1

Haha, have you seen Tena for men?

  • +1

Pantene shampoo and Pantene Conditioner - bought 31 350ml bottles of each for $1.30 each about 6 months ago.

    • +3

Pantene? Pimple city there my friend. Whatever those parabens or other crap that's in it is so nasty.

      • no problems with it.

    • +2

I would have loved to bought Pantene from all those deals. But Pantene conditioner is the one thing in the world that has given me acne on a consistent basis.

  • I find it disturbing yet amusing that you need advice on which shampoo to use.

    • +13

Are you going to need counselling?

  • +2

    what ever is the cheapest

  • +22

Whatever they have in the hotels I go to

  • +2

Pantene large pump bottle when on special for $7.50, lasts like 6 months.

  • +4

    Baking soda.

    • +2

Just tried this today. Works a treat

      • +1

        Any hair left??

        • +1

Hahahahaha… My hair is like a wildman now. So clean.

The baking soda and vinegar thing works so good.

  • +3

I use the one by Organic Care; there are few types like balanced, colour therapy (if you use colours on your hair), etc. What I like about it is that it is [supposed to be] completely natural. As an added bonus, it does not contain any paraffin (wax) or SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulphate). Plus it's only $3.50 for the 400 ml from Coolies (regular price).

    • +1

      The apple smells soooooooooooo good

    • I use this one too because they list on their label that they don't test on animals. I'm not bothered by that fact but my vegan gf likes that fact haha.

    • Me too, Organic Care 2 in 1 Anti-Dandruff Conditioning Shampoo for me

Does it all and it's cheap

      https://www.woolworths.com.au/Shop/Search/Products?searchTer…

    • The link posted by Abaddon listed "Sodium Laureth Sulfate (Plant Derived)" though in the ingredients

  • +2

I really like the Clear range.
    Otherwise, whatever the wife buys.

  • +2

Whatever is cheap. I care not which fruit or flower my hair smells like for the next half-hour. But the colour must be heliotrope.

  • Cheap soap gives me hives cause its full of petrochemicals, i use the soap that has the least chemical crap in there. As far as shampoo goes i use that moogoo stuff that is milk based.

  • +2

Johnstons Baby shampoo. Simple, cheap, no added crap.

    • Makes my hair yellowish after a while. Makes my scalp itch too.

      • +1

At least there is No More Tears : )

  • +1

treseme shampoo, buy on sale when $5

don't use conditioner, don't exactly know what the hell it does.

i pity any one who uses the fruit shampoo from coles.

  • +1

    Yellow Palmolive soap.

  • +2

I suggest you shave your head to save on shampoo costs.

    • +3

But have you quantified the cost of the extra wear on your razor?

      • The two costs even themselves out.

However, having a bold head makes you more aerodynamic, so you get to walk and work faster.
        That means more time saved.
        Time = Money.

        ∴ Bold = OzBargainer's choice of hairstyle!

  • I use Johnson's Baby Conditioning Shampoo, less chemical.

  • +10

I remember when I had hair….. that was before the wife & children of course.

    • +4

I wasn't aware Homer Simpson had an OzB account.

      • The username gives it away.
But DonutLicker would've also sufficed as an alias.

  • +7

Haven't used shampoo or conditioner for over five years and my hair and scalp are happier and healthier than ever. Just give it a scrub with a brush before showering and rinse with water.

    • +1

Haven't used shampoo or conditioner for over five years and my hair and scalp are happier and healthier than ever.

And what of all the other people around you? :X

      • +2

My brother did it as well. Took a few months for the balance to establish itself but never an issue since I think. Never noticed any weird smells.

        • +5

I haven't used shampoo for about 4 years. A daily wash and vigorous rub of the scalp in just water does me fine and my hair is clean. The only time I use shampoo - maybe 3 times a year - is when my hair is full of crap after brushcutting or similar. I'm never going back!

        • +1

@denuto: same here. Just a vigorous brushing and wash with water. Like others it did take a while, couple of weeks, for my hair to get used to it, but it's fine now. Every now and then I'll use shampoo, maybe 3-4 times per year if my hair has been subjected to something that needs a good washing but otherwise it's all good.

    • +4

I thought all Ozbargainers would be no poo. The savings are massive, not to mention that it's better for your hair.

    • +2

Same here. Nearly 7 years. If you want a bit of body/less dryness, let it dry and just wet it again. This brings out the natural oils. I reckon shampoo is bad for your hair.

Shampoo is a con and a con that works on women, oddly enough.

  • +5

    Head and Shoulders 2-in-1

  • +1

As a guy with long hair (curly locks and ringlets) I use aldis deep fortifying conditioner. Used to be a lot better but its a bit watered down now. I only use shampoo once a week as it strips all the moisture and leaves me looking like Yahoo Serious (frizzy) for a couple of days. I also find you dont get dandruff or dry flaky scalp if you dont shampoo every day plus i need the conditioner to detangle.

    • I'm the same, have yet to find a shampoo that doesn't leave my hair frizzy dry and wiry, i tend to use a small amount and not leave it in for very long to and that minimizes the issue (by not removing too much of the oils).

  • +2

I use hotel shampoos & Soaps. Travelling a lot helps me keep cost down in self grooming dept.

  • +1

There seems to be half price sales at woollies/coles on many brands - garnier, dove, pantene etc.. Just buy whatever is the cheapest at the given time.

I've used the Nivea "2 in 1" - body, hair combo's - it works quite well too..

  • I use OGX argon oil shampoo with no conditioner. contains none of the rubbish in some of the more mainstream shampoos and it sometimes goes half price at woollies/coles

  • +1

Head n Shoulders Old Spice. It's the business. Stock up when on special.

  • Faith In Nature Seaweed & Citrus Shampoo. It's made in the UK. All those shampoos from the supermarkets irritate my scalp and you can buy this in 5 litre tubs.

  • +1

I may have the solution you've been looking for! But first, what is this shampoo and conditioner you speak of?

  • +5

I don't use anything but warm water. Have done for 2-3 years now.
