Western Digital 16TB My Book Duo (2 x 8TB WD RED) £391.53 (~$650.91) Delivered @ Amazon UK

450

WD 16TB My Book Duo. Can be configured with RAID 0, RAID 1, JBOD. It contains 2 x 8TB WD Red drives. It is user-serviceable.

I just bought one of these a week ago for $100 more so I could pull the drives out and use in a NAS. They work perfectly outside the enclosure.

These generally sell for ~$1000AUD in Australia. The WD Red drives sell for ~$450AUD+.

VAT is removed at checkout.

EDIT 1: I've marked as expired as the price was just bumped up to £440.03 (~$731.54) delivered. Still not bad, but not amazing. This is the price I paid a week ago.

EDIT 2: As of 6:41AM AEST the price has been lowered again down to ~$650.91. Updated deal so no longer marked as expired.

EDIT 3: Price has gone up again to £440.03 (~$731.54) delivered. Still not bad, but not the original price so marking deal as expired.

  • Thanks! Been on the hunt for new HDDs, this is a steal.

    • No probs - Filling up a NAS is expensive, this makes it much cheaper ;) - The drives are great, for the price you cannot get better quality.

      • @DrDollar hey mate how do you guys get these shipped to AUs? when i added it to my cart it said does not ship to your distination. :(

        • Hi there, as it's Amazon I think it depends on the source of goods.

When I posted the deal they were shipping to Australia but may not be now.

You could try seeing if there are other sellers shipping to Australia. You can switch by clicking on the bit that says "(6) new from £503"

  • +1

Nice deal. Slightly cheaper than the previous one a couple of months ago- https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/262796

  • +1

I am not sure whether they have changed things but that first review on amazon states that these are not usable outside the enclosure. Just a heads up.

    • +9

Not sure which review you are referring to. The drives work fine outside the enclosure, I just did this last week. I think some people are worrying about the encryption on the drives perhaps?

If you place data on the drives whilst in the enclosure and then remove the drive you will not be able to read the data externally because it is encrypted - The data can be read only within the enclosure, this is normal though.

If intending to use outside the enclosure, just do it from the get-go and you will be fine.

      • Ah, that explains it. So you gotta pull out the drives without booting the thing. Cheers.

        • +3

No worries, it is fine to boot it up in the enclosure and give it a test before pulling out the drives. It's just if you put data on the drives whilst they are within the enclosure, you won't see that data when you use the drives externally since it was encrypted by the controller inside the enclosure. The drives though will be fine and completely usable.

        • @DrDollar: So if the enclosure fails, there is no way to recover your data?

        • @Martini: mmm, interesting point. What format does the enclosure use on the drives. Could you put them into say, a Synology enclosure to read them in case of the WD enclosure failing?

        • +1

@Martini: You are probably correct - It is hardware-level encryption that cannot be turned off and there is no configurable "key" should you need to pop into another enclosure if the enclosure fails. You would have to ask WD for a definitive answer.

If this is the case though: If you are planning on actually using the product itself (enclosure with the drives inside), then depending on how much space you are after, you might want to consider buying two and configure them as JBOD. Then have non-raid backup between the two external drives. So effective space available would be half of 32TB, so 16TB but backed up across the two external enclosures. If you lose an enclosure, your other one has the data backed up.

Really just depends on what your needs are though. I personally wouldn't use the product itself, just the drives inside.

        • +1

@silvertone: I believe you wouldn't be able to, no. The enclosure's controller imposes hardware-level encryption meaning it is likely the only controller able to read the data on the disks.

        • Does this mean you can't pull the drive, reformat and partition away?

        • @entropysbane: You can pull the drive out and reformat, partition and use it just fine. You will just lose whatever data was on the disk that's all.

      • get-go

Please explain what is this? From the beginning?

        • +1

Yep "from the get-go" means "from the beginning/start". Not sure where/when it originated, but sounds American to me. We use it a lot here.

  • +1

Ta OP ended up ordering 6 (for 12x8tb) works out to be similar cost per gb to the Toshiba 6tb x300 deal a little while ago.

    • Do you need to pay any import duty?

      • Yep. Works out to about ~$4086 in total or about $681 each unit.

        • +2

Unless you send them individually to 6 different addresses in 6 seperate orders

        • @MATTDAMON:
Why does it need to be 6 different addresses? When they had these on ssale at Amazon Germany a couple of months ago I just made 3 separate orders going to the same address and I didn't get charged any tax.

        • @fatpizza:

I believe there is a risk that they might get matched up and send you a bill. It's not a definite though.

        • @lysp: correct

    • +1

Why do you need so many?

      • +2

to store the entire internet porno archive

        P/s: for science of course

        • I thought he was running some kind of business/server etc..

          Multiple servers.

Currently have 220tb in service (24x3tb, 12x6tb, 8x5tb, 16x2tb) and another 96tb will come in handy (and push me over 0.25PB)

        • @congngo:

          4K pr0n

        • @Steptoe:

          UHD blurays, 100gb+ a pop.

        • @MATTDAMON: Hi MATTDAMON, what media player/streamer do you play UHD blurays with? Or straight from computer? If so what software do you use? Just asking for suggestions. Cheers.

        • @dread_hotsauce:

All of my media is served via plex, for my UHD tv's I use a pair of 6th gen i3 Nuc's via direct play, for my tv's that are 1080p I just use chrome cast 2's

        • @MATTDAMON: Thanks, mate. What software are you running from NUC as VLC doesn't work for me. Are the medias mkv or else?

        • @dread_hotsauce:

          Plex home theater.

Media is primarily mkv but plex server will transcode on the fly as needed to suit various devices (chromecasts/tablets etc)

  • If I was to order this and take the drives out for my NAS, would the myBOOK Duo have any resale value by itself?

    • Hadn't thought of that, after upgrading my drives I'd have two of these with 6TB, could be worth a little bit.

    • +1

Short answer - Not really. It can't really be used as a caddy because the controller has hardware-level encryption enabled. Any disk you put inside would likely need to be wiped to be "readable" and then anything written to it would be encrypted.

I don't really see a use for the enclosure once the drives are taken out, unless someone wants to buy their own drives and pop them inside the enclosure, in which case that would likely be more expensive than just buying the My Book Duo with drives inside.

Unless someone else can see another foreseeable use, I think the enclosure alone wouldn't really have any resale value.

      • I have a NAS with 5TB WD Red drives, I'll take out the 8tb from these and stick the 5tb in. That's one potential use. :)

As for the encryption people are talking about I doubt these drives will be unusable outside the enclosure after they're encrypted. Rather the data that's on them will be unreadable and you would need to wipe them to use them again.

        • Yes, you are correct :)

        • I believe there are also issues with the enclosure being "hard-coded" with 8tb drive sizes.

I did a bit of reading and there needs to be a little bit of hackery to get other sized drives into a 8/16tb enclosure.

        • +1

          @lysp:

Just put my 5TB Reds in one of my enclosures today. I had to download 'WD Drive Utilities' which detects that the Raid Array is broken and allows to you to reformat it. After it finishing reconfiguring the RAID array it works perfectly with 2 5TB drives in it.

  • +2

Tempting. Assume all WD warranties on these drives are void after taking them out of the enclosure?

    • You can still keep the enclosure and return the HDDs should they become faulty.

The unit is user serviceable, so the warranty should remain intact.

    • Unsure about this, the enclosure is user-serviceable. Worst case if you are using the drive outside the enclosure and it were to fail, you might be able to pop it back in the enclosure and reinitialize the drive. It might then seem as if it were never used outside the enclosure in the first place. There is no physical "tell" but they might have a SMART value or something that is updated if the drive is used outside the enclosure. Just my 2c.

      • You would have to break the warranty deal to remove the hard drives

        Hence the warranty is void

Someone correct me if I'm wrong

        • +1

This post is assuming you meant 'warranty seal', not 'warranty deal'.

I have one of these, there is no 'warranty seal'. These enclosure is designed to be opened and the for the drives to be replaceable.

        • @fatpizza:

Yes seal , damn auto correct

Doesn't one of the screws have a sticker over it

        • +1

@easternculture: Nope - I just did this last week. No warranty seal, only on the drives themselves. In a previous comment I mentioned there is no physical "tell" that the drives have been removed.

  • This current price £441.98 with VAT is not the cheapest according to CCC. The cheapest was £411.03 with VAT.

  • Nice

  • if i want to buy 2 , and i do separate orders to avoid the GTS, will they screw me still?

i bought one i want to place the other order now.

    cheers

    • -1

If you send to to a different address (ie parents or work) you wont get hit up with the import tax. I would also change the name as well to whoever is recieving it at that address.

      • i dont get it how mate,… in any even, i was gona do one express shipping for $10 more and the other normal…

there is no way that they will prevent you buying more stuff and try to group it like that.

        • If you make 2 orders (of 1 each) and send each order to a different address they will not group it.

        • @MATTDAMON:

but even if its to the same address, one is express post the other not,.. its 2 different items, its not over 1000 for a single item, why would they apply gst? its only for purchases over 1k not multiple purchases.

        • -1

          @T1OOO:

The momnent the combined order exceeds 1000 it will get slapped with import tax, if you split the order but send it to the same address you run the risk of customs noticing and charging you the import tax anyways, ergo the different addresses.

        • @MATTDAMON:

yeah but surely if one is express and the other normal mail, going tot he same place same name, at diff times youll be ok?

        • @T1OOO:

It's still in essence the same order.

Both ordered at the same or similar time, by the same person to the same address.

They will see that as deliberately splitting the order to avoid tax.

Having 2 different addresses means it's not easy for someone to identify that they are the same person.

          Order 1:
          John Smith
          1 Main Rd
          Melbourne VIC 3000
          +
          Order 2:
          John Smith
          1 Main Rd
          Melbourne VIC 3000

          vs

          Order 1:
          John Smith
          1 Main Rd
          Melbourne VIC 3000
          +
          Order 2:
          John Smith
          25 Other Road
          South Yarra VIC 3141

Looking at the first example you'd say it's the same person. Second example - who knows.

Apart from the encryption issue discussed above, there's another significant limitation to the apparent 'user servicability' aspect of the drives being removable - the enclosure only recognises 'supported' drives, as discovered by another user and verified myself. There's doesn't seem to be a list of supported drives, so one's left with assumptions (any WD? just WD Reds? what about a future models?).

The bare 8TB Red drives are great. They run a bit hot, but are quiet, and externally they appear identical to the higher-RPM Hitachi UltraStar He8.

    • Well, since it's a Western Digital enclosure that comes with WD Reds preinstalled it sort of makes sense that it's probably limited to Red drives only.

    • the encryption thing dosnt make sens, why would they do that?

however, im not planing on runing it in mirrored i want to use the full 16gb and being reds i hop they last longer than normal drives.

    • Only WD drives are supported in the enclosure I believe. I just tested the enclosure with a Seagate 2TB drive I had lying around and WD Drive Utilities recognizes the drive but will not allow the enclosure to function advising to install a WD supported drive.

  • price just sent up to $750!

    bah i wanted 2!

i guess ill have to wait now
    AUD 731.54

    • Thanks, $ saved

      • As of 6:41AM AEST the price has been lowered again down to ~$650.91.

  • i was considering paying the 770 from the USA store, but this just hit the spot, thanks for the deal so much!

it will tied me over will i wait out the next sale, to properly organise all my data!

    cheers

  • It was nice while it lasted. Unsure whether I should mark this as expired or change the price details…

  • $707.74 by paying in GBP and using BankWest Zero Platinum MasterCard.

    Not 'too' bad I guess.

  • Damn, annoyed I missed out on this. Building up a new NAS and looking at high spec drives.

Oh well, hopefully some good deals come on 8/10TB's during black friday

  • As has been repeated (again and again), the enclosure for this drive store the encryption data. This means that anything loaded onto the drive while in the enclosure won't be readable if you remove the drive to put into another case/internal. With the price as it is though, it isn't a huge deal breaker to put the drives into 3.5" external enclosures. You know… just in case.

I'm thinking I'll do this. Anyone have any suggestions of a decent 3.5" usb 3 enclosure?

https://www.zapals.com/orico-3588us3-bk-3-5-inch-usb-3-0-ext… looks ok, but does anyone have any experience with Orico? Also worth mentioning for that particular enclosure is that it lacks much ventilation. That be an issue with a WD Red?

    Thanks

    • -1

This doesn't sound true at all. Why would there be a forced encryption?

      • You do realise that your personal opinion does not necessarily equate to reality don't you…..or is that you Mr Picard?

        • +1

Cool bruh, a link would've been useful (your remark wasn't).

It just seemed ridiculous to be true. It apparently is true. Probably still more bearable than usb interfaces soldered to 2.5"s in wd's passports. Different issue, I know.

        • +1

@pizzaguy: A link that you could have looked for yourself before posting perhaps?

There were strong hints here that the situation was indeed "ridiculous" but true(and I am in full agreement that this WD methodology stinks…in line with soldered connections which, again, WD seem to favour)

ON EDIT sorry, accidentally negged so added plus to cancel. No "revoke" option on "votes" page(closed deal?)

      • +1

Don't take my word for it. Take the word of the other three or four people who commented the same thing on this same deal.

        It's unfortunate. It's stupid. But it's true. :(

    • orico is cheap garbage, the biggest enclosure brand is vantec, had mine for roughly 8 years, but usb2 with no issues. the 2-3 oricos i had died within 1-2 years.

      • Ok. Thanks, mate.

  • what about warranty on the HDDs if you take them out? There's been a lot of WD Reds on eBay lately that checking the warranty status comes up "out of region"?
And yes, you can put them back in the enclosure but if the drive is u/s how are you going to get away with WD not checking the drive, and what about shipping on the warranty return?

    • You'd deal with Amazon. Which is a reason why you shouldn't buy it from ebay if it is a person reselling a drive they themselves bought.

  • Argh! Missed it! Have been waiting for a price drop to buy one!

    <$680 delivered is the goal.

  • +2

$629.12 AUD using 28 degrees. Thanks again OP!

    • Came here to post this. :)

  • As of 6:41AM AEST the price has been lowered again down to ~$650.91. Updated deal so no longer marked as expired.

  • Back up to £500 (~£417 with VAT removed) + postage

    • Roller-coaster of emotions. Deal updated again.

  • Damn I bought this last time and want another one, such amazing value, but be forwarned, if you want to put other HDDS in this case they need to be WD drives.

I was going to swap out 2 x 2tb samsungs from my NAS and swap them over, but cant get the samsung drives to work in this case which is a shame

  • A cracking deal if you can still get this for the lowest price posted. I missed out unfortunately. I did buy from the previous amazon Germany deal which I thought was a good price

  • Help NEEDED! i jsut notice my address is wrong.. i have NFI how it was set to this

LEVEL x or y , zzz Grenfell St,
    adelaide, Australian Capitol Territory 5000
    Australia

    IT SHOULD BE

LEVEL x or y , zzz Grenfell St,
    adelaide, SOUTH AUSTRALIA 5000
    Australia

obviously the sate is wrong, but given i have the name of the city and the postcode will they be smart enough to work it ?

    Cheers!

    • had a package once with the postcode correct but the state wrong. auspost bounced it around australia with notes written on the package "try vic", "maybe nsw" when it was 500x which is clearly SA, and nobody bothered to check

      good luck

      • Lol how long ago?

I did say "Adelaide" and "5000"

So hopefully they arnt that retarded now days especially!

      • Well looks like good news, the UPS address states:

        Package To: adelaide, SA, AU
