Hungry Jacks - Mouldy Bun Consumed

Hey guys,

So this evening I purchased the new Halloween Whopper and half way through consuming it I noticed the taste was off only to look at the bottom and discover I had been comsuming a mouldy bun. I was pretty disgusted at this point and ended up vommiting the burger back up.

I called the Hungry Jacks immediately and informed them of the situation and the only solution they could provide was - "we can make you another whopper" to which I rejected and asked to speak to the manager, he then took my details and said the manager will call me back tomorrow.

How should I approach this situation?

Thanks in advance :)

Here's photos of the bun:

This happened to me once a few months ago at HJs Hinkler in Bundaberg. Can't remember the burger but it was a wholemeal style bun. Took a bite and realised something wasn't right. Mouldy af on the bottom. Got a free replacement, but no acknowledgement that there was any sort of problem.

  • This is Australia. There won't be a lawsuit. There won't be any monetary compensation. Usually you will be told to harden the F up because that's the prevailing attitude when it comes to food poisoning these days.

I ate a burrito filled with raw chicken at a popular mexican chain restaurant and all I got offered was a replacement burrito. I'm not saying that it's right or wrong, I'm just saying that's the way it is, businesses have less of an incentive compared to their American counterparts to reevaluate their food safety practices due to less consequences from serving up contaminated food to a customer. Look at Chipotle and how hard they're trying to fix their food safety issues to win back their customers, that's the kind of effort Australian consumers deserve.

  • Old bread. Sometimes supermarket bread grows visible mould before the use by date. Could be a supplier issue, but more likely a store issue. There's no reason they shouldn't be using buns delivered daily.

  • I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for the manager to contact you about the mould. In my experience HJ are pretty bad at replying to complaints and that was headoffice.

  • Are you sure it was mould? The halloween whopper comes with a "cheesy bun".

I don't think HJ is posh enough to have bleu cheese burgers.

Seriously what do you want from this? Im curious, replacement burger, $50, $100, $1000000.

ring up slater and gordon, or maurice blackburn and see what thay can do.

if your mum gave you a mouldy bit of bread, would you roast her?

This is a bit different, they're meant to be a professional business and you must get what you paid for not to mention the strict health and safety regulations they have to adhere to. Plus if one bun is mouldy, the potential for many more buns to be like that could be quite high, potentially sold and making other people sick. It needs to be reported and they need to be held accountable for it.

        true, but mistakes happen.

would a bit of mould make some one really sick? if this caused someone to get sick/die sure they are accountable, if causation is 100%, but if it were me, id get over it pretty quick.

seriously ring up a now win no fee lawyer and get someone to take on the case. you might get some cash… or laughed at

Probably, probably not. One thing that's certain is that the mold poses a health risk which is treated as a serious matter in the food industry. In this situation, best case nothing happens; worst case OP and other people fall ill. Either way, food authorities should be alerted and the matter is to be investigated so that it can be prevented from happening again.

        • Probably if they have a weak immune system

Honestly I've eaten bread with a spot of mould before. Bread mould is pretty harmless.

But thats not the point at all.

If they can't serve mould free bread, they aren't running a hygienic kitchen

      • That bread is often refrigerated in the same place as the meat. It could suggest a problem with their freezer etc. Mouldy bread should definitely be of concern.

      • "Bread mould is pretty harmless". Not so according to United States Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service:

        Do you feel lucky…?

        • Mould is harmful to those allergic to it. That is not what I would consider a toxin or poison.

        • @rememberme:

Not necessarily. A number of bread mould types produce toxins that can be quite harmful.

Mouldy bread, both at home and at a commercial establishment is a sign that food hygiene is slipping. If you're eating mouldy bread at home… all I got to say is, bread is cheap, chuck that sh1t in the bin and go get another ffs!

  • tl;dr - Next time at your favourite fast food joint, check burger bun for complimentary mould.

  • I guess they chose trick over treat.

  • That's why so called "Halloween Whopper"

  • If you end up with freebies, I'd be worried about any extra juice dripping from the burger…

If you think that mold is bad, you should see my shower :s

    • nothing a little bit of wizz won't neutralize

  • My girlfriend got served a chicken nugget hidden in the fries once. She is vegetarian.
Complained to the arrogant manager, but he practically said to F**K OFF.
Then complained to their social media, got called from regional manager who said the store manager wont apologise, so I will apologise on his behalf and hung up.
Havent been back to HJ since then, not that it makes a difference to their revenue.

  • I brought a thickshake from a cafe that had heaps of tiny bits of broken plastic in the bottom of the glass which I found as I was nearly finished the drink. When I complained, there was no apology from the owner, just an argument from her that it was ice and not plastic. Pretty obvious when it didn't MELT. I thought that was pretty rude.

    • Welcome to Australia, where people dont know the meaning of "service".

Funny how in other countries where the pay rate is far far worse customer service is way better. Must be inversely proportional to wages :P

      • They get tips for providing good service , which is essential for them because of their low min wage and they compete against their own colleagues which can sometimes foster a toxic work environment. So the grass isn't always greener on the other side.

In Australia our minimum wage is higher so tipping is not the norm. That also means the staff have no real motivation to provide top notch service (unless they have a real incentive to, or have a Kpi in place).

Send in Gordon Ramsay… Shut it down!

  • It's a part of the halloween promotion, every order comes with a side of mould.
