ZMA+ can help restore these minerals and contribute to normal muscle function during and after exercise, assist with energy production and boost your body's antioxidant defenses.

Musashi ZMA+ is around $17.99 and a little cheaper at different places. Go to Chemistwarehouse with a copy of the AMCAL advertisement and ask for a price match and 10% discount "off the difference". Price will come down to $12.05 per bottle.

Magnesium, Zinc and Manganese are key minerals that can be lost when you undertake vigorous exercise.

Ingredients: Each capsule: Magnesium 100mg (as amino acid chelate 500mg), Zinc 5mg (as amino acid chelate 25mg), Manganese 1mg (as amino acid chelate 10mg)

If you really want cheap ZMA, buy the powdered version from www.bulknutrients.com.au 100g (185 servings) for $22 + freight but you either need to buy scales or guess the weight (540mg) which is around one eighth of teaspoon. The recipe in Bulknutrients is different: 500 magnesium L aspartate, 30mg zinc picolinate and 10mg vitamin B6.

Research
The use and effectiveness of supplementing with ZMA has been studied widely. An example is a study that looked at the effect of ZMA supplementation in American footballers by Lorrie Brilla, Ph.D.

A group of 12 competitive NCAA football players who took ZMA nightly during an eight-week training program had their muscle strength and functional power measured (pre and post training) and the athletes that took ZMA nightly for the 8 week period had 2.5 times greater strength gains and double the functional power gains compared to the placebo group. Doesn't claim to do that. I want it for the sleep benefits. Unfortunately the closest amcal is almost 70km away. The online price match for chemist warehouse is a pain in the ass.

Read the posted study and there should much better compounds for sleep

        • And the bargain for them would be?
          Mate, ozBARGAIN, not ozBROSCIENCE.

        • Aw yeah - Sorry I just read the first blurb that claimed recovery and energy.

As for the sleep benefits I checked a few websites and 95% of the customers comments were about the sleep benefits over the energy/recovery aspect.

    • Zinc and Magnesium both have 100's of beneficial effects on the body. If I was ever going to choose just one supplement to take it would be ZMA.

A 1998 study was undertaken on NCAA football players during an 8-week spring training program. The control group was told to cease taking any nutritional supplements. Those who took the ZMA tablets claimed greater increases in muscle strength.[4] This study was funded by SNAC Systems Inc, the intellectual property right holder, and one of the study's authors, Victor Conte, has ownership equity in this company.

Note that the serving size is 4 capsules, so this yields 15 serves.

Feel free to save your cash and get 120 caps (1 per serve, so 120 serves) for $30 from Bulk Nutrients.

    • I use BN ZMA. It really helps reduce DOMS after the gym, and I sleep much sounder. It is awesome.

    • Yep, the tablet forms of supplements are really watered down.

  • If you want a more 'complete' sleep and recovery aid I rec this

    • interesting mix of ingredient with the Cyclo Rem product which includes ZMA Vitamin B6 1.7 mg, Magnesium 72 mg, Zinc 5 mg and Melatonin (unknown quantity).

(Melatonin didnt help me sleep and it was the USA version not the homeopathic version they sell in Australia).
