Paying eBay seller directly through Paypal. Need advice

Hi good day! mates. I need advice on whether or not i should push through on the payment with the seller on ebay. I won an item bid for a smartphone today. but for some reason the seller informed me to settle the payment of the said item outside ebay and directly through her paypal account instead (perhaps seller wants to avoid selling fees from ebay i reckon?). I'm quite concerned that if i do this i might not be covered by buyer protection of some sort from Ebay. Any advice you can provide will be much appreciated thanks.

Do not do it. Scam for sure.
Post the link and let people see what they can find out.

report str8 2 ebay forward all communication to ebay not allowed

  • Thanks for the advice mates appreciate it. But i want to give the seller the benefit of the doubt further. Ive asked already for the imei number of the item as well as the screenshot of the receipt in which she gladly gave and it Seems like its all legit so far. Also Seller is an oz local and has 4 positive buyers review in the past in her ebay profile. Shes a first time seller and her RFS is that her mother bought the item for her as a birthday gift and ends up buying the wrong color and wants to buy a diffrent color of the said item.

any other precautionary steps that you can advice me to ensure that im really dealing with a legit seller? Thanks. Cheers.

You ask for advise, yet you dont listen to it. Then why Ask?. It's a scam.

Yes, just send payment via eBay and let the seller know that it's against eBay's T&Cs to ask for payment outside eBay (it's written everywhere in big writing).

Why would you give a stranger on the internet the benefit of the doubt? This is a well known scam method. Feedback doesn't mean a thing as scammers often use compromised/stolen accounts for this very reason.

If the seller wanted to avoid eBay fees they shouldn't have sold via eBay. This is a scam.

If you deliberately avoid eBay buyer protection methods despite all advice telling you not to then you'll likely get stung.

      • let the seller know that it's against eBay's T&Cs to ask for payment outside eBay

that is incorrect. ebay doesn't have a policy that restricts sellers from accepting payment "outside" of ebay, because ebay don't accecpt payments.

ebay sellers are free to accept payment via pp, bank deposit, cash on collection, merchant cc, etc.

If the seller wanted to avoid eBay fees they shouldn't have sold via eBay.

the fvf has already been charged to the seller's account. they can't get it back unless they cancel the transaction or open an uid.

If you are really keen, just pay using PayPal on eBay - you could pretend you didn't understand her request, or tried as asked but couldn't figure it out/wouldn't process. Personally I wouldn't want to deal with seller after their request, no matter how much I wanted the item as I wouldn't trust.

A first-time seller? Let it go. We all understand the desire for a sweet bargain, but this sounds too risky.

    • i want to give the seller the benefit of the doubt further.

Sure, then why come here and ignore the advice given

Some people just set themselves up for being scammed.

There is NO logical reason she has given for dealing outside of eBay.

Fundamentally - people say - but the con man was so nice and plausible.

Ahem, the reason why they are conmen, not jailbirds is that they ARE plausible

If something sounds too good to be true it usually is.

Even if it's not a scam, you won't have any protection with eBay and PayPal.

Why you would even consider doing it is beyond me?

Even if it's not a scam, you won't have any protection with eBay and PayPal.

the buyer won't have mbg, but will still be covered by pp buyer protection.

Seller doesn't avoid fees unless they say the item wasn't followed through or paid for.

I personally wouldn't buy a high risk item like a phone from a seller with less than 100 feedback.

  • Just pay for it normally- through eBay. Otherwise report the seller to ebay

Thank you all for the advice! you guys really helped talked some sense into me with all your responses. Now i just realized i looked stupid for even considering buying item and for not using common sense in the beginning. Well, it turns out the seller is a fraud as she took out the listing of the said item right after i told her that settling the payment outside ebay is against the policy and threatened to report her to ebay in the process.

Dont forget to report it anyway. Might just help someone else.

    • Good decision.

    • Good going. Paypal doesn't cover Sellers or Buyers on Gumtree. Means you would lose your money if you lodged a dispute.
Keep it on Ebay or other reputable Australian sites when buying.

      • -1

There is PayPal protection for GumTree for buyers.

perhaps seller wants to avoid selling fees from ebay i reckon?

the fvf has already been charged to the seller's account. they can't get it back unless they cancel the transaction or open an uid.

  • paying for items using pp "outside" of ebay is just as safe for buyers as paying for items "inside" ebay. buyers are covered by pp buyer protection as long as the transaction is done as per pp t&c.

    • Paying inside ebay puts the payment temporarily on hold, funds become available to seller in 3, 7 or 21 days based on postage method and tracking information provided to eBay. Also eBay can easily reverse a transaction if it is found to be dodgy, no need to open a dispute in PayPal and wait for it. Also most serious sellers try to get the best ratings and behave when eBay is involved.

      • Paying inside ebay puts the payment temporarily on hold, funds become available to seller in 3, 7 or 21

Any payment can be held by pp, not only those from a ebay listing. This policy can be found in the ua.

Also eBay can easily reverse a transaction if it is found to be dodgy, no need to open a dispute in PayPal and wait for it.

So can any transactions settled with pp. Pp even has a 180 days dispute limit. That is about 120 days beyond ebay fb limit and ~150 for other disputes.

        • Any payment can be held by pp, not only those from a ebay listing. This policy can be found in the ua.

Yes it can be, but in this case, paying outside eBay in PayPal makes money instantly available to new seller, while paying through eBay puts it on hold and seller knows it.

So can any transactions settled with pp. Pp even has a 180 days dispute limit. That is about 120 days beyond ebay fb limit and ~150 for other disputes.

If a dispute in paypal was so easy, no seller would use it because 180 days dispute limit is like a free 6 months rental before refund. Reversing a transaction in PayPal takes time, 20 days after opening a dispute, then paypal asks for proof of delivery shipment from seller and she has it, also there is no contract to claim based on it, so the seller has better position. Also the buyer should send the item back to seller and seller has an option to open an appeal claiming that item was not received or was replaced/changed or anything a dodgy person can do, then buyer should provide supporting proof again and this cycle can continue and no one has access to funds, lots of time and energy is wasted.

          @rh:

then paypal asks for proof of delivery from seller

They don't actually, PayPal only need proof of shipment and not delivery.

Only a claim under the eBay Guarantee has to prove delivery.

so the seller has better position

Nope, the buyer is always in a better position, that's intentional by eBay as they want to attract and retain buyers.

Sellers are a dime-a-dozen to them, all you have to do is look at eBay's feedback system to work that out.

  • If he or she is selling on Ebay, then he or she should pay the Ebay fees.

  • How do people sell expensive stuff on those Facebook buy/sell groups? Don't they all use PayPal and get buyers protection from PayPal?
