NBN FTTP (Fiber to the Home) users -- Survey, your speedtests results are much appreciated

Hi guys. I want to see if there's anybody on FTTH (Fiber to the Home) or FTTP (to the Premise) who may be experiencing congestion issues with their selected ISP.

Here's what you need to contribute — a computer connected via Ethernet cable (or very strong Wifi connection, preferably Wireless AC)
A web browser that has latest version of Flash (v23)

Then please upload your stats in the format below:

Example:

My speedtest with NuSkope ISP

(Peak Hour, 5PM)

23.86 mb Download, 4.75 mb Upload with Microsoft Edge Browser, Flash version 23
http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/5743136959

Plan Details
FTTP / Tier 2 speeds, 25 MB download, 5 MB upload, Unlimited quota @ $67.95 a month

The purpose of this experiment is to see which ISP's are the best / worse when it comes to peak hour congestion. So far, based on conjecture and readings on WP, is that

Hypothesis 1: ISPs who offer unlimited plans at a very cheap price may seem to offer the best value in terms of speed, quota and $ per gigabyte, but they also seem to cop many complaints about network performance issues. Probably one of the main downsides of getting a 'cheap ride' is that once you offer Unlimited plans, there will be users who abuse that and download terabytes of data a month, spoiling it for everyone else who might be on the same network since they're essentially hogging all the bandwidth. Some of the worst offenders are Exetel and TPG, whose customers don't seem to be getting the speeds they paid for and are experiencing latency issues.

Hypothesis 2: Premium ISP's who reject the idea of providing Unlimited Plans and who charge up to 25 percent more than the going market rate for NBN Plans seem to be highly praised amongst a small subset of users who can afford to pay perhaps around $80~100 a month (an example being SkyMesh, who arguably charges the most per GB for their plans and do not offer any sort of bundles or Unlimited usage quotas). The Question is, are Premium ISP's like Skymesh worth your coin, whether if paying the extra also means getting better internet?

Why even bother with NBN when you are below ADSL speeds?

      • +12

Because there is no other option for internet cause there is no adsl/cable.

and it was just me using it.

oh and i can upgrade my speed anytime i want.
like i did earlier today to 25/5

        http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/5749300391

        • what is the price now post-upgrade?

        • +1

          @Iggemo:

It costs $69.95 for Tier 2 speeds.

And to answer the below question, there is no point paying $59.95 a month for Tier 1 NBN, its really the worst value plan and should only be considered if you are a light user, or if you at work most of the time and there's nobody at home to take advantage of it (e.g you live alone).

      • Because ADSL2+ average speed …. 2010? is 8mbps…

Though based on forums, its probably around 4mbps now due to Telstra not maintaining the lines

        Me… I use to get 5mbps… but since Feb I'm 1-2mbps

    • That all?

Im just on ADSL2 and pay $60 for phone and unlimited net, also with TPG, and mine is this:

      http://www.speedtest.net/result/5752531483.png

What's the point of FTTP at that speed? Not being a jerk, i legitimately dont understand?

      • Some people don't want the extra speed.

        I know. I don't understand it either.

Also, once NBN is switched on in your area you may no longer sign up for legacy connections.

        • Im sorry can u elaborate on this:

Also, once NBN is switched on in your area you may no longer sign up for legacy connections.

I dont follow. Are you actually saying nobody can ever sign up for ADSL in an NBN area????

        • +1

@Iggemo: ADSL gets disconnected i think a year or something after nbn gets connected

When i moved into this place nbn was all that was available.

        • @Axelstrife: Wow i had no idea about that.. i was wondering what the benefits are and if it's worth even siwtching to NBN but sounds like i'll have to. Also, i think my area is getting that HFC NBN rather than FTTP or even FTTN so im not sure how good or bad that is compared to others who've posted in here

        • @Iggemo: Yeah. You will have to. The whole point of NBN is to replace what we have now. Think of it in the same way as the transition from analogue to digital. You can no longer sign up for ADSL once NBN is switched on, and your ADSL or what-have-you will be switched off after a grace period of around 12-18 months.

      • I went with 12/1 over a year ago for two reasons.

        1. I moves from my old place which had adsl2 at a speed of 1.5mbps so 12mbps felt fast as.

        2. I would of went to the 25/5 speed straight up but then they bundled unlimited calls for 79.99 pm not the current 69.99 didnt feel like paying for something i didnt need.

100mbps would be awesome but thats really overkill for just me and would be a complete wast of money.
If i ever do need that speed i can call up same as i did the other day and upgrade again only took 2 hours for my speed upgrade.

Its not a matter of dont want i just dont need it.

        • Yeah 12 is fine for download, it's the uploads that kill you.. that's why i get annoyed whenever i see Turncoat talking about "oh who needs to watch 4 HD movies at once (referencing the download speed) but we all know downloads are already fine, it's the upload speed that needs boosting !

Also, a couple of weeks before last fed election, i got a lovely letter in the mail telling me NBN was about to start in my area. Funnily enough, since the election, suddenly nothing, no record of anyhting on nbnco site and no plans to do anything; funny that.

        • @Iggemo: Yeah the upload sucks even uploading pictures 4-5mb took long lol

But for gaming NBN is much better then cable or adsl2 they just can't beat 1,2,3 ping lol

        • +2

@Axelstrife: True. Yeah my wife is a digital artist so she uploads a lot of large PNG files, and she comes from San Francisco, so she has learned the hard way how dogshit Aus internet is compared to California. Over there the speeds are superfast, here she needs to upload things overnight cos it takes 10 hours. And this is on a connection i have which is faster than ~68% of AU so it's not like mine is especially bad, just how garbage AU is overall :_(

        • @Iggemo:Once the HFC network is upgraded and live, it is hoped it will deliver speeds of up to 100Mbps (megabits per second) download and 40Mbps upload to end users.
          http://blog.iinet.net.au/the-nbn-hfc-technology/
          Copy pasted lol

Just wish they stick to full fibre which we all know is faster then anything else once finished
i can have 4 100mbps connected hooked up at once and yet they limit speeds to 100mbps per connection.

        • @Axelstrife: Im not worried about downloads, just uploads, anything about 5 would be great, let alone 40. I was just reading whirlpool about HFC and the consensus seems to be nobody knows how the speeds will be and it will depend on how the network is installed and how much money is invested. People certainly seem skeptical overall about the 40Mbps upload speed tho. Atm mine is 0.8 though so nearly anything will be an upgrade

      • +2

Apart from the obvious fact you can upgrade your nbn speed many many times faster, whenever you want, if you're happy to pay a bit extra, Fibre Optic cable will never theoretically degrade or get worse.

You may be getting that speed right now. But there's no guarantee your internet won't dropout the next time it rains, or in some cases, you breath to heavily in the vicinity of your Telstra Pit and due to the poor maintenance from Telstra and the age of your copper, the moisture from your breath permeates the plastic shopping bag protecting your phone line join and shorts it out.

        • Can u eloborate plz ?

how would congestion be diff from now to then, etc?

My current experience is that things do slow down in peak, but i'd like an educated answer on the two

          http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/5746387686

After enduring 7+ years of slower than 1Mbps, I think I deserve lightning speeds!

I Whatsapp'ed my overseas friends in Hong Kong to show them my much improved internet speed, but they showed me their speed tests, which were like 1000Mbps… brought me back down to Earth and just goes to show how faaaaar behind we are in Australia. :(

        • @brotherrfranciz: fk me didnt know cable goes that high
          ive only seen 110-130 mbps

        • @terminal2k
@Axelstrife Awesome; need to upgrade to cable - I've had enough of my 1MiB/s down and 100KiBs up! haha Is there a site like this: http://www.nbnco.com.au/learn-about-the-nbn/rollout-map.html… but shows all the areas where cable is available or is cable available everywhere like ADLS2+(oh wait maybe not everywhere as I did come across a building without a functioning copper cable)?

Also NBN = FTTB|FTTP|FTTH, right? Or is it just just still on copper lines but somehow getting more stable and faster speeds? Because I always thought it was just FTTB, until I read someone(not sure who that someone was or if it was even here on this site I read it on or not) who says, no it's not NBN is just fibre on copper line still….so you're still copped with all the drawbacks of a copper line.

Also I like to be spoon fed; is there a complete list of ISP that shows all the services they provide(NBN, Fibre, Cable, etc,.)? Nevermind I found it here: http://www.idd.com.au/internet-service-providers.php :P So from that list, it would appear only Grapevine, Netbay Internet, and Optus only do Cable…

        • @brotherrfranciz: That's like half of the fastest consumer's internet available, the fasted being a 2 gigabit connection both ways, so up and down as I remember reading an article of someone having it installed in their house!

        • @Axelstrife: My cable is faster than most tests here: 115mbps down. The only thing that NBN would bring to me is faster uploads (a measly 2 mbps right now)

        • @epicttiimm: whats your ping like?
mines at least 3 is every speed test sometimes 2 and only a couple times 1

I initially signed up with tpg for this plan (their own fttb connection to my building, which is in syd cbd). They later had some problems with competing directly with nbn I think, so they set up a company called wondercom to manage all fttb connections (so now I'm with wondercom).
This plan is fttb 100/40 mbps unlimited. Prices may be different now, but worth checking if your building is connected to this service.

    I am now sufficiently depressed.

    • +3

I'm tempted to do this test from work and claim it as my home Internet speeds so i can at least look I'm on NBN rather than the crappy rusted out shit they call copper that loses packets and slows to pedestrian speeds at night-time peak hour and goes even worse when it rains and the Tel$tra pit floods or fills with bees like my last place I lived in.

I'm not even on the 3 year "NBN" plan so I'm sufficiently screwed for the foreseeable future. I loathe this current Government to the very core of my being for the crap they're dishing out and having the gall to call NBN.

      • +1

        Ahhh yes.

And I love the reliability in which the connections are made at the exchanges.

A thousand tiny little wires in a tiny little cylindrical mess, so that each time someone needs to be connected/disconnected at the exchange, the wonderful Telstra man can go and fiddle with the surrounding wires and break the connection for those surrounding the intended target wire. And of course, the cap must remain off the exchange whilst it is pouring with rain so that the thing can be covered in water and slow everyone’s speeds whilst resistance increases.

It is such a great system, that we owe so love so much.
