edit the audible website is weird as hell and lists barely any titles when you search. But I can buy just fine through amazon.com

it worked for me. thanks mate. if you struggle to display US site of audible, click on 'keep my au account and take me to US version' on AU homepage. Then you will be directed to the US site, at the bottom, click on 'redeem a promo code'. enter the code. remember after two months it will be charged 14,95 per month. There is an option to be remembered in order to cancel your gold membership before payments start.

Worked on the US site after opening an account using an unactivated aus post load&go card with obviously no credit on it and using the name 'valued cardholder', maybe could have just made up a credit card number.

How I miss my Beverly Hills residence… ahemThis is still working and I had been able to use this after the previous 2 months free offer by cancelling subscription (obviously using up all the credits I have) and then redeem this. And yes, as the others said, works on both AU and US accounts.
