Black Wolf Mega Deluxe Self Inflating Mat $269.90 + Free Delivery @ Snowys (RRP $389.90)

50

"Camping has long been known for ‘roughing it’. There’s nothing wrong with that (in its place) but at some point in time you realise that a bad night’s sleep and a sore back takes away from an otherwise amazing trip." ~ Aaron Schubert, 4WDing Australia

There are three bits of gear you should invest your money in if you're serious about camping - tent, sleeping mat, sleeping bag. If you have a good tent, mat, and bag you're well on your way to having an enjoyable camping trip.

And when it comes to sleeping mats, you'll be hard pressed to find better than the Black Wolf Mega Deluxe.

But what's so good about the Mega Deluxe?

It's self-inflating, meaning you don't feel like you're sleeping on a balloon filled with cold air and you don't have to slave away pumping the damn thing up!

It's 10cm thick, meaning your hip won't touch the ground if you're a side-sleeper.

And, it has a line of velcro running down the edge so you can attach it to another.

Check out Aaron's full review here, and check out the reviews on the product page.

Also available is the Mega Deluxe Double and the famous Exped Megamat 10LXW and Duo.

Hi Rep. Any deals Mega deluxe double?

    • It's already listed at the reduced price. Should be the cheapest you'll find in Australia. :)

How compact is the double when rolled up after camping? Does it fold I'm half before rolling or is it the full width still?

        • G'day @kevsta89 - The double sure does fold in half before being rolled up. It packs down to 68L x 25W x 25H cm. It actually packs smaller than the Megamat Duo. The single packs down to 80L x 20W x 20H cm. Hope that helps. Cheers, Paul

        • @paul-snowys: Thanks Paul. That seems really compact and a good price. Which is better out of the blackwolf mega deluxe double and the exped megamat duo?

        • @kevsta89: Not as compact as an airbed but WAY more comfortable.

Which is better - the BW or Exped? Hmm. That's a tough question as they're both so good. But I would probably say the Exped - that's because it has more fluffy stuff in it, hence the larger packed size. And it has the square sides - more sleeping space. But it's more $$$. If you don't want to spent $489.95, buy the Mega Deluxe Double with confidence.

@kevsta89:We tried both the Blackwolf mega and the Exped Megamat Duo in a store. Ended up buying the Exped as it felt more comfy to us. The square edges added to the appeal. Got it on sale from Snowys for $299 about a month ago. Used it for a weekend away in Byron and it was good. Heaps better than the cheap one it replaced. Worth the money in my opinion.

I might add that Snowys were great. Delivered to Brisbane within 2 or 3 days of order. We were packing to go to Byron and didn't expect it to arrive prior when the courier greeted me in the garage. Got to take it with us, which was awesome. Had spoken to a gent in their store earlier in the week and he was really helpful too. Happy to recommend them.

        • @bigrizz: Thanks for the feedback. $299 seems a great price for the exped duo. I'd definitely jump at that price. I am still undecided on the blackwolf, but can't justify the $489.95 on the exped either.

Definitely agree about Snowys good service. I've used them before for online orders. Much better than the big camping stores we have here in Perth.

@paul-snowys - any chance of a similar price on the exped duo as mentioned by @bigrizz?

@kevsta89: Seriously, with the benefit of hindsight, I'd wait for the Exped to go on sale, if you're not in a hurry. For me at least, the Blackwolf is good but the Exped is better. Just my opinion. I've seen lots of great reviews on both. You probably wouldn't know any different if you bought the Blackwolf. I think I read every review for both on the Snowy's website before deciding. I too could be biased by the fact I actually splashed the cash and have slept on the Exped for a sum total of 3 nights.

These self inflating mattresses are a MUST HAVE item when camping. Can't comment on this brand specifically, but my Dune 4WD self inflating mattress is amazing.

    • Too right, @stuffedcrust. :) I'm familiar with the Dunes, they're very similar to the Oztrail 4WD mats, and I'll call it - these are even more comfortable! :) ~ Paul

I bought the Denali Royale mat a few weeks and I was impressed. Compared it to the blackwolf deluxe. I suspect it's anacondas replica of the blackwolf and it feels just as good and dare I say even better. Got it on sale at $115

    • Bargain. Hope it works out. :) Cheers, Paul

The "4WD" style ones are also 10cm thick and cost much less. What's the difference?
I have a Katmandu 7cm and it's great. Seems to be break the laws of physics, you can lay on your side and your hip doesn't touch the ground.

We bought a 10cm self inflatable from SCA before buying an Exped Megamat. It was crap. My wife is somewhere less than 60kg and her hip was bottoming out on it. My 90kg frame fared worse. We left it inflated for 2 weeks just to make sure and it didn't improve much. We took it back and got the Exped. So the moral to the story is that it's not all about thickness (bring on the jokes). The Exped is so much better and completely chalk and cheese. We tried a lot of mattresses in store. All the Blackwolf (deluxe, superdeluxe, megadeluxe), the Oztrail, the Exped, a Roman, a Coleman, the Denali and Dune ones. That's just what I remember. Of the more budget versions (<$150), we rated the Coleman (http://www.greatescapecamping.com.au/bedding/self-inflating-…). Still, we opted for the Exped for comfort and the great packdown. It's tiny relative to the outgoing double 4wd one we had that took up half the damn roof basket. This thing is a third the size, I kid you not.

I never thought we'd spend that much money on a camp mat but it was that much better in our opinion. I'm a crappy sleeper at the best of times. I find it bloody tough to get a half decent sleep while camping. The Exped lets me get through the nights without feeling crap for half the following day. Enough justification for me.

    • I believe the Dune and Oztrail 4WD Mats are quite similar, but I'll talk directly of the Oztrail version as we stock it and I am familiar with it. And I'll talk about the single and double only.

Pack size for these mats is pretty bulky:

      Single: 85L x 30W x 30H cm (6kg)
      Double: 132L x 30W x 30H cm (8kg)

The comfort is different. I won't say the 4WD is not as good as the Mega but the Mega has a latex-y feel to it, it has memory, and feels rather mattress-y. The 4WD has an 'open cell' feel to it - the filling feels less dense and doesn't support the body as well.

The 4WD Mat can be a bit challenging to roll back up. The valves don't do as good a job as letting air out without letting it back in as you roll it up and the lower-tech filling doesn't help the case either. The Mega is really easy to roll up. As Aaron wrote in his review:

"There’s a little trick that I use to roll the mattress up nice and tightly. Firstly, undo the valves. Then, starting at the bottom, roll it up as tight as possible. When it’s done, do the valves up, and unroll it, repeating the rolling process but this time with the valves still done up."

Lastly, the quality isn't there with the 4WD Mat. It's a 'value for money' option for those wanting to upgrade to a self-inflating mat, usually because they're sick of their airbed, but not spend too much. But it won't last as long as a Mega Deluxe or Megamat. If you're on a budget and want something more comfy and reliable than an airbed go the Oztrail 4WD Mat or even better (actually, WAY better), the new Zempire Bomber Mat. If comfort is of utmost importance, and/or less bulk, the Mega Deluxe or Megamat are your best choice.
