Thoughts on the Macbook Pro 2016?

Anyone looking to get one of the new MacBooks? Price is really steep, but then again, not surprised. I have to admit, I'm more excited about Skylake + Polaris in the new ones rather than the touch bar.

  • I like the idea now that you could charge the Mac from either side, but the thing I hate is that they removed MagSafe (undoubtedly one of the best features on Mac laptops - I don't know why they would remove it, no other computer company to my knowledge has this). Oh yeah, the illuminated Apple logo is now gone too…

The 'old' Retina MacBook Pro is still a very good laptop - I bought mine in August 2013, and it's still working well except the battery is weaker and the Rewind F7 isn't working anymore. I'm just glad that they finally got rid of the old 2008-era MacBook Pro with the SuperDrive.

  • I've been using Macs as my main computing platform since 2004. My next laptop is likely to be a Metabox, but most definitely not an Apple.

    • Get a business laptop. Metabox are great gaming laptops, but their build quality is fairly average.

  • I will wait for some reviews and Benchmarks, but most probably i will buy it. Going to be my first mac.

  • ha, they've put the words "Macbook Pro" at the bottom of the screen again

Maybe these MacBook Pros are like the new BBQ shapes and new coke. A big joke to get them more relevant, and to make people care again. Maybe they purposefully released this one so they can release the proper one, with a glowing logo, USB and $1000 less in early 2017. Maybe :(.

    1. New mac is very expensive.
    2. Spec does not matter from day one. How long do you have to wait to save a file matters - spec has to be translated to user experience. Windows fails this.
    3. I am still reinstalling windows machines. I never reinstall my 5 years old Apple.

Now, the problem is if I do not buy mac, what else?

      Windows fails this.

No, you fail this. There are 400+ million Windows 10 users many of which are working in space, working in advanced technologies, doing academic work and working with big data. You just suck.

I am still reinstalling windows machines

Haven't reinstalled Windows 10 since I upgraded in July. Use a system image or something. Windows 10 makes re-installation so simple. They're making it even more user friendly in the next update.

Spec does not matter from day one

You are clearly a basic user. It doesn't matter what you use. Only computer illiterates and ignorant people blame the OS for not being able to achieve such basic tasks.

Now, the problem is if I do not buy mac, what else?

You just said you are still reinstalling windows machines. There's your answer. Try not to contradict yourself.

So as someone that has owned the 2012 macbook pro retina 15" till since 2012 it still runs like a beast no slow downs no nothing only thing is battery isnt what it used to be about 3-5 hours usage time depending on the task. bought it back then for 2.25k and it has been worth every penny. that being said having a look a apples new macbook pricing i was shocked to see just how expensive even the base model pro is without touchbar. While its probably do doubt a great computer windows ultra books have definitely caught up in terms of specs and probably longevity as well so there's no way i can justify the ridiculous price jump. 2.2k base model 13" pro no touch bar is super expensive but apple's for apples right? so base model 15" i bought in 2012 for 2.25k the current base model 15" is now 3.6k. How do you justify the jump in price i can understand inflation costs and RnD cost but still and even the exchange rate cost when our currency was stronger back then but has the jump really been 1K in 4 years???!!!!

    • Agree, just do not buy and we can wait. :)

Windows computers have always been ahead in specs.

      And yes, it's expensive.

What R&D? MOst of their hardware comes from Intel, Samsung, AMD and chinese chip makers.
It's just the Apple tax. People are willing to fork out extra for Apple products.

A lot of the extra profits Apple makes are heading to Europe and Israel. THe more money Apple gets, the more jobs it creates in Israel, which creates more settlements. Pretty sure they're moving development of the iphone 8 to Israel.

    Zionism wins again.

My friends are being pinged by Intel and Apple recruiters to move to Israel to work at their research facilities.

What a load of racist bullshit.

      • -2

It's not bullshit. Prove me otherwise.

Bow down to your zionist overlords. Israel is the most racist "democracy" in this world, so you might not want to defend them.

        • I'm surprised someone hasn't mentioned Hitler yet. Oh wait.

        • Why would I waste time with a racist moron past this final post?

          Prove me otherwise.

Burden of proof is on you.

  • I would highly recommend a look at the Dell XPS 13. I got an i5, 8Gb Ram, 128GB for about $1,000 brand new (linked from oz bargain). Build quality is on par with Apple and get this….. Has most the ports you will need.

    • Hi! This seems like an awesome price! can you please link the ozbargain post please? Thank you!!

Have a 2011 Macbook Air 13" going strong as casual browser, and a beefy gaming PC with 1070 GTX and 27" G-Sync IPS 1440p.

Yup, Apple can shove their overpriced POS

The 13 inch should drop the Pro branding all together. No dedicated GPU option, max 8 gig ram and a dual core? I like that they adopted USB C for charging, I never thought Id see that day that apple played ball with universal standards. Don't get me wrong I have been an apple user on and off for years now, however I find them a little underwhelming these days. I guess you cant be THE innovator for ever.

    • Max 16 GB of RAM on the 13".
I'm also disappointed with the dual core only nature of it.

I didn't think previous Macbook Pro 13" had GPU and quad core - am I wrong?

      • Sorry should have specified that the standard un upgraded 13 inch is 8 gig ram. They are upgradeable albeit at 320 more dollars.

  • It looks terribly overpriced but people will still lap it up.

Saying that im a hypocrite, I love my iphones.

    • Same, I hate how they can just do that to us but their products are pretty good quality. Every android phone I've had a chance to use (Samsung Galaxy etc) have ALWAYS felt so laggy/heavy to me.

I want to say upfront that I can live with the new MacBook Pro. What actually massively pissed off me is the fact Apple is discontinuing the Air lineup.

I own a 2013 MacBook Air 11-inch. Still works very well till now. My typical day-to-day usage scenario will be use it on the move by itself, and plug a set of peripherals (monitor, mouse, keyboard) when I hit home. It does the job remarkably well, with all ports on it being utilized.

The fact that I'll have to live with the new MacBook as the continuity of Air lineup is plainly unacceptable. How do I suppose to fit DisplayPort/2 USBS/MagSafe into a single USB-C port? I know there are dongles that could possibly do that, but I'll have to get one of those which have USB-C on one side and power/HDMI/USB on the other side, and get another USB hub to bridge into the USB port onto the dongle to handle my 2 USB devices. WTF? I've heard shitty reviews about the Core M processors also.

I might compromise to the entry level of the new MacBook Pro, but it is so much more expensive, and it only has two USB-C ports. So in other words, not much better than one, since I'll still have to awkwardly cascade dongles up to make it fit my working environment.

The new MacBook Pro with Touchbar fulfills my requirements by having 4 USB-C ports. But what can I possibly benefit from the touchbar, as a developer, exactly? Merely a gimmick.

Seriously Apple. You don't need to force yourself into innovation. I can live with the design of Air, for many years to come. I'm happy enough if you will be kind enough to occasionally boost up the specs. There are actually people around that actually use your devices as workhorses, and couldn't care less if you makes it easier for users to pick up an emoji in Message or swiping through the photos.

  • Overpriced piece of crap

  • They've lost the plot.
I was a bit disappointed with my 2015 13" (mid level model) not having much punch compared to my 2008 15" (base model) when it was new.
These new ones are quite far behind the competition (more so than usual) and only the most expensive option has the dedicated (decent) GPU.
My base model 2008 had a dedicated GPU ffs. These Intel GPU's don't compare in my experience.

Suffice to say I won't be upgrading, even though I'd like a 15" screen as the 13" is a tad small.

    • My base model 2008 had a dedicated GPU ffs. These Intel GPU's don't compare in my experience.

Let's be fair, the iris 540 is probably twice as good as the dedicated gpu from 2008.

      • Perhaps and maybe on paper, but doing similar things (like playing the same game) on the 13" struggles (low frame rate and low graphical quality) where as when I played on the 15" it handled it much much better, even had it hooked up to an external monitor for extended desktop at the time.
The game in this particular example/experience has gone through expansions and updates etc, so the Intel GPU should be able to handle it given its much newer and up to date as well.
Just my personal experience with it.

  • LOL Razer about the macbook pro. "You call yourself Pro? S my D." about the sd slot of course.

  • My 2012 Air has been going strong for 4 and a half years and I've been waiting for an upgraded Mac Mini for over a year. After the announcement of the new MacBook Pros I've decided to build my own Windows/Linux PC.

  • To me, new Macbook Pro looked more like a Macbook "Pro" which seems to be what people are complaining about, at least from what I've been reading. People complained about lack of SD card slot, lack of 32GB RAM option seems to have annoyed a quite few number of people as well. Still kinda curious on whether the models with Touch Bar has DDR3 or DDR4 (I heard that its clock suggests DDR4, though Apple mention DDR3 on the tech document), I am waiting for ifixit's teardown for that.

I watched the announcement, the Touch Bar looked cool. How they implemented it looked cool as well (WatchOS and modified S1 chip I believe). That said, I have my doubts on how useful it is from the demonstration. All the demonstrators were focussing on the Touch Bar not on the monitor, I thought it was detracting attention from the monitor (which would slow down your workflow compared to say, conventional keyboard and memorising short cuts, at least on document editing front for certain). At the very least, the demonstration, while looking cool, didn't sell me on the usefulness of the Touch Bar.

Not to mention AMOLED and burn ins, I never like having AMOLED on something that is always on because it degrades faster than LCDs in a noticible way. Judging how people use Macbooks for a long time, I think that might cause an issue (at least to a degree where some people would want to get that part replaced for a price).

I never liked Apple's butterfly keyboard but apparently it's better than the ones on Macbook, with it being Gen 2 (not sure whether it's better than the one on this year's one though). I kinda doubt it'd be something I'd like though.

The price looked too steep even compared to something like Surface Book (which in my opinion lives and dies with its gimmick and thus I feel its price is kinda too steep to begin with).

So in short, I am not sold on its new features (they looked cool though). The device to me looks like a Macbook "Pro" than a "Macbook Pro". I thought the price was tad bit steep. Aside from that, I was kinda disappointed that they kinda discontinued Macbook Air line (they went, we have 4 line ups and I took that as, this is what we will go for from now on).

    • (I heard that its clock suggests DDR4, though Apple mention DDR3 on the tech document)

Think I read somewhere is LPDDR3.

The device to me looks like a Macbook "Pro" than a "Macbook Pro".

Agreed. When charging, the Macbook has 0 ports to plug anything; the 13in base mbp will have 1.

I was kinda disappointed that they kinda discontinued Macbook Air line

Well the new 13 mbp is basically a mba.

      • Yeah, I thought I was missing few things here and there, yep LPDDR, not DDR. Anyways, Apple say MBP use 2133MHz LPDDR3, that said, Skylake do not officially support DDR3 speeds above 1866MHz so some people think it might be LPDDR4, Arstechnica on that. Also I thought LPDDR4 was more efficient with power (that said, as you could've guessed with my mistakes up there, not an expert on it). Yeah, so I am going to wait till ifixit or anyone else opens it up to verify what kind of RAM it uses.

Eh, the reason I wanted refreshed Macbook Air line was, it suited what my mother needs (except the screen). So MBP is overspecced and over the budget as far as I am concerned and the Macbook is underspecced for her (and isn't exactly cheap either for what it offers).

      • Well the new 13 mbp is basically a mba.

        …for double the price.

  • Apparent New MacBook Pro outsold every competing laptop in just five days. We can all rubbish about the new MacBook Pro online but people still throw their wallets at it.

    • Not surprising given Apple has a very loyal fanbase. In addition to that, many people feel 'locked in' to the Apple ecosystem whether its because they have iPhones, iPads, etc, or need to use OSX only applications like FCPX, Logic, Xcode, etc. This subset of people also have probably been waiting for a computer upgrade in a long time.

      • I lodged a protest vote by buying one of the last 11" MBAs from TGG today. Haha - take that Apple…???

    • Tim Cook knows his target audience. People harped on about how much it's not suitable for professionals but who cares, it's the best laptop that runs MacOS.

Though some people were saying that that sales figure might be massive because it's been so long since Macbook Pro received a facelift. While there may have been group of people who didn't buy the new model, the demand for it would've been massive to begin with.

  • As I'm still very happy with my 2012 MBA, I'm going to hold out for the 2017 mbp.

Hopefully they will release decent spec / good battery life non touch bar version.

    Touch bar is really redundant.
