  • Way cheaper to buy the original Hikvision cameras from AliExpress

    • any recommendations for a 8+ camera setup?

      • Depends on the resolution and how good you want infrared night vision
I suggest at least 2MP (Full HD)
Make sure you get a network video recorder that has power over Ethernet ports, that way you can plug & play install yourself.
If you buy it as a package, you should get at least 20-25 metre long cat 5e Ethernet cables for each camera included.

        • wheres the cheapest to buy ethernetcables?

do the aliexpress sellers usually include them in packages?

2mp is what im after with ok night vision since i haveflood lights everywhere

whats a good network video recorder brand or just get some chinese oem one?

          thanks

and is hikvision the only decent brand?

        • @furythree:
As mentioned, Ethernet cables are usually included with the cameras if you buy in a package with an NVR (network video recorder). When I bought 8 cameras in one purchase, the seller gave an extra 25% discount over the already cheap listed price.
Only get a Hikvision NVR - most of the cameras & NVRs that Swann sell are rebranded Hikvision. Hikvision is THE NAME in security cameras. They also have their own apps so you can stream all cameras live to your phone or tablet, zoom in live, play back recording, etc, etc, etc The live streaming is really easy to set up
Since you only need 'average' night vision, get mini-bullet cameras instead of full size bullet cameras.
Just get them to quote & play them off each other. If you are worried about dealing with someone in China, just settle on a seller who has more reviews than others.
I dealt with someone who had no reviews and she responded repeatedly in minutes to my questions, including product photos & I got my cameras in 4 working days as express freight was included.
You also get buyer protection, like eBay (but alot shorter).
Don't forget cashrewards which is around 8%+ IIRC.

        • @yoyomablue: ima frequent shopper on aliexpress so thats not a big deal

the trouble is out of all the tech im familiar with, home security is the one i have no idea about

do you mind showing me which 8 camera setup you got?

also are wireless cameras any good? the pain point for me is that i dont want to run hundreds of meters of ethernet all over the house. but even wireless cameras need power so i dont know how that solves that problem

the other question i had was do any of these come with motion sensors, or is that usually a separate system? hikvision make them too? ive seen no name brands on ebay for around $130 which tick the boxes but im not sure if theyre any good

        • @furythree: I have 8x 4MP bullet cameras with a 4K (UHD) 16 channel NVR (although 4K recording is limited to maximum 4 cameras), with a 6TB Western Digital Purple Hard Drive, which gives me about 9 days of continuous 24 hour HD recording for 10 cameras (I already had another 2x 3MP cameras)
I wouldn't go wifi because you are still going to have a problem of powering them & they will be unreliable
Motion sensing is set by the NVR software operating system - it is known as 'event recording' for movement. This can save a lot of hard drive space, but of course you run the risk of it not detecting movement. That said, in my experience, the movement activated recording is very good!!

        • @yoyomablue: appreciate the insights. how much did this set you back all up? the hdd alone would be a few hundred, followed by a few hundred for the nvr and id assume about 100 each for each camera

so all up over $1500? + self install effort?

    • I looked at aliexpress and hikvision 4MP cameras are averaging around $110 / camera. How much is the network recorder?

Not trolling, but am genuinely interested in a security setup as well but the swann offering seems to be cheaper by far. Not sure about quality/usability though.

      • In my experience, like for like Swann is about 4 times at their 'street' price (not retail)

    • Yep. Even with the discount you are paying 4 times the price to have the Swann sticker, and features disabled.

  • +2

Swann's products are ok but their apps for smrtphone are horrible and never updated

  • Hi OP any reason you went for DVR8-4550 instead of DVR8-5000? Im looking at both and undecided.

    • +1

From what i can tell, the DVR8-5000 includes Zigbee connectivity, which would be a major plus.
