i bought an xbox when it was originally released, and was sitting collecting dust for a few years… until i found out about xbmc, i now use it everyday ~
think of it as a media centre… i transfer (you could also stream) all your media files (movies, tv, music, photos, games) to the xbox… it plays every type of file…
you'll need to have the xbox modchipped, and a new hard disk installed (to store all your files).. download required software.. i am pretty crap with this stuff, so i paid to get this done… most places charge about $50 to $80 for this service… you'll need to add the cost of a HDD too…

Or you can get it softmodded for $0 if you have access to a softmodding disc and memcard. Once modded you can give the disc and memcard back to the owner; you'll never need it again.

Don't need to upgrade the HDD unless you want to store media locally, but it's a good idea.

The main issue here is likely to be supply of these old xboxes. I tried my local EB games, and they said that the normal price for the old xboxes was $79, but they hardly ever had any stock - so I'd suggest phoning before visiting a store to see if they have it in stock, so as to save yourself a potentially wasted trip.
