Hi, got this email today that this mobile scanner app is free on 2nd Nov (US) time i think because it's still free on the store, for windows phone users only.

Its not office lens but it can recognise text from photos (from printouts from testing the app and not my ugly handwriting)

As stated from my email

Mobile Doc Scanner allows you to identify the text from any image.

This app will be indispensable helper both work and study. With Mobile Doc Scanner you can easily get the desired text from brochures, pictures, pages of scanned magazines and books (supported formats: .jpeg, .jpg, .png, .bmp). The app has a camera, which allows to adjust the focus and other parameters to recognize all the text you want.
Moreover Mobile Doc Scanner is very easy to use, support such Windows 10 features as Windows Hello, Cortana, Ink and much more.

Just select an image and scan the text. After saving, the scanned text will be available in a .txt or .doc file.

Only November 2! Don't miss your chance to get Mobile Doc Scanner for FREE!

Edit: There is a free version as well in the app store. Not sure what the difference is atm.

Edit 2: Free version has ads and less functionality. That's about it.

    ermahgerd a werndows app!

  • It could even read my handwritten numbers using a Lumia 520.

  • Realistically there's plenty of free alternatives that are arguably better too.

MS has their own: Office Lens

Camscanner has always been awesome and got cloud support

    • Was thinking the same thing but not sure if office lens actually captures the text, rather just scans and PDFs the documents.

      I could be wrong though

From the app description (Office Lens):

Office Lens is like having a scanner in your pocket. Like magic, it will digitise notes from whiteboards or blackboards. Always have important documents or business cards to hand. Sketch your ideas and snap a picture for later. Don't lose receipts or stray sticky notes again! By installing the app, you agree to these terms and conditions: http://aka.ms/olenswindowsterms.

        Scenarios:
        - Capture and crop a picture of a whiteboard or blackboard, and share your meeting notes with colleagues.
        - Make digital copies of your printed documents, business cards or posters, and trim them precisely.
        - Printed text will be automatically recognised (using OCR) by converting Word and PDF, so you can search for words in images and copy and edit them.

Office Lens even does language translations in AR mode.. Really cool.

        • Good to know 😀.

  • Is there a way to add the app to my live account and install later?
