Sick Leave Can I Use a Stat Dec Instead of Medical Certificate?

If not, what's the easiest/quickest way to get a medical certificate. Seeing a Doc takes ages usually so would rather not sit around whilst sick waiting for a piece of paper.

Thanks everyone

Personally, I think the med cert is a waste. If people want a day off, they can still get one (migraine, etc) and are just wasting Medicare and the doctors resources.

In my opinion, a med cert proves no more than a stat dec would.

nowadays you can obtain a med certain from many chemists for $25. money for jam.

Pfft… A true OzBargainer would just book into a bulk billing doctor during a quiet period.

      • Not many bulk billing doctors left.
        At least in Brisbane.
So a doctor's certificate can cost you $30-40 after medicare rebate.

        • Bummer. I have one 5 minutes from home and 5 minutes from work. Not that I visit often. I'm lucky that I'm rarely sick.

  • Yes, you can use a stat dec.

  • Hi,

Print off a stat dec form, fill personal details out, go to your local chemist (chemist warehouse i've used) you may have to wait for the chemist to sign & stamp it, but I had no problem, questions from them the one time I got one.

    • FYI, with a stat dec as the person signing it you're not allowed to question what is written on it - all you are authenticating is the person signing it is the person that they say they are. You can fill out a stat dec stating that you are in fact the reincarnation of Elvis, and that is why you can't attend work, and any JP will witness your signature on it (as you wear the consequences for making a false declaration).

Geez. How many of these have you copped?

    What does your workplace require?

Probably best to find this out first.

Over my few years as a pharmacist, I have heard a number of different stories from people. It seems that different workplaces have different requirements for proof of sick leave.

Most places will let you have one day off as sick leave without proof. Once you get to the second day, you will require a medical certificate.

Pharmacists are only allowed to provide medical certificates for a maximum of two days and are unable to back date them. They are also only allowed to provide them for things they are able to diagnose like colds and flu, or gastroenteritis, etc.
Some workplaces won't even accept pharmacists medical certificates and will require a doctor's certificate.

Then there are other places that are happy to accept a stat dec for sick leave.

In your case, a pharmacy might be the quickest way to get a medical certificate, if you are happy to pay between $25-30 for their service.

This. As a fellow practicing pharmacist, it irritates me when patients complain about why I cannot provide medical certificates for such ailments as sprained ankles, etc.

      • They could at least fake a more significant with a wink.

  • Yes. Doesn't mean your workplace will be happy about it though.

  • Lol, how can one tell you the quickest or easiest way of getting a medical certificate without seeing a doctor? If you are referring to a fake med cert then it can be really hectic and no one would provide you with one that easily. However, you can present a Stat Dec instead of that.

  • Yes. Fair Work says a Stat Dec is an acceptable form of evidence that you are sick. Just print out out a stat dec form, fill it out and sign it at your local chemist (or Police Station).

Types of evidence needed for sick / carer’s leave
Medical certificates or statutory declarations are examples of acceptable forms of evidence. While there are no strict rules on what type of evidence needs to be given, the evidence has to convince a reasonable person that the employee was genuinely entitled to the sick or carer’s leave.

  • What do you physically need to write in the stat dec? " I was/ am unable to perform work duties due to medical reasons from X to X?

    • See no problem with that. I believe that's basically they same content you would find on a med cert.

Another tip. Download a Stat Dec that doesn't mention anything about a JP or Notary Public on it. A chemist etc can't sign the Stat Dec that has the above listed on it, but can if it's not mentioned anywhere on the document.

The stat Dec is handy for a backdated claim, ie I didn't go the dr at the start and they don't like writing them retrospectively. Always thought I was stuffed as I couldn't produce a medical cert.

Good idea. I have once been caught up by this, and didn't think of a stat dec.
