Hi Everyone,

Big price drop, lowest its been i believe. Got to be quick though; ends in a few hours.

Doesn't look like they currently have stock, but will ship in 7-14 Days.

I my self have purchased the Amazon Dot which i will couple with my portable speaker, but if you dont have a dedicated speaker this may be a good deal.

Ends Midnight US time, so not long to go.

  • Must be because Google Home is out.

Possibly. I predict Amazon's echos price will drop considerably at Christmas time when the big fight for smart assistants heats up. Looking at reviews of both it looks like Google Home is a better product, but Echo is a mature product that has lots of support from other companies. I hope the same happens to google home.

Wont be long till Microsoft/Apple start getting involved either……

Don't you have to use this with a VPN as it will not work in Australia?
    https://www.finder.com.au/amazon-alexa-echo-dot-australia

    • I dont believe so, as its the first time ive heard about having to use a VPN to get it to work. Can someone with an echo comment?

      • I didn't, but I only really use it for home automation.

        • Was it tricky to set up? Did you have to use request maker to set time zones etc..?

        • @jackwoz: Haven't really bothered with localisation, just plugged it in, added skills and started using them.

        • @XeKToReX: Im interested to know, what home automation do you use with the echo?

        • +2

@jackwoz: HomeSeer, Harmony and LiFX mainly!

      • Even easier, you can just add your postcode as somewhere in Guam (96910) which matches the Aussie east coast timezone.

        • Any idea what i would type in for Perth?

        • @jackwoz: P E R T H

          (Indonesia, Philippines I guess)

        • @cart: Umm, im guessing that i need to pick somewhere that is US based

        • +1

@jackwoz: for Perth you would put in the Virgin Islands in the US.

        • Not always, as Guam doesn't support DST, which puts it off this time of year for most of Australia. Works for Queensland though.

I was looking at this a few weeks ago. Alexa voice thing doesn't work in Australia.

      • +2

        Yep, does.

        • It works here?

        • +4

Is there an Echo here :)

        • @Ducatista: Works perfectly here.

      • +1

Had it for 6+ months. Works great here.

        • works for me too!

It has actually gone down to $128 a couple of months ago, that's when I got mine. It was posted here on ozbargain too. Now i have an Echo and a few Dots at home. But just like what was said above it might go down in price closer to Christmas or even US' Black Friday sale.

    • +1

Do you find much difference in the responsiveness of the Dots vs the full Echo?

      • Same microphones and internals, just no speaker. Having said this im not sure what changes were made between the gen 1 Dot and gen 2

      • +1

I dont really notice a lag on the Dot's response time. I think they have the same hardware as the Echos.only difference really is missing speakers on the Dots.

Has anyone noticed that these things are being used on The Block to do telstra voice automation?

    • Yeh bit of discussion about it on Whirlpool, noone has any real idea whats going on though

  • +1

I've got both echo and the Dots. Get the dot; same capabilities, more flexibility.

    • Does dot work without echo?

      • +2

Yep, it's just an echo without the bigger speaker.

        • Thanks.

  • Does anyone know if you can get these to work with localised news sources yet?

    • Not that I've seen, sadly.
