Looking for New SUV for about 30-40k

Hello guys,

My family is looking to purchase a brand new SUV as few of my family members are coming to Australia for holidays (finally :)
We need a seven-seater SUV that is right for the long drive and is also economical. Budget is about 35k (can exceed to 40k max). The cars currently I am looking at are:

Let me know your opinion/review if you own any of them that which is better and why. Suggestions for any other cars are welcome.

Ford territory with the diesel donk, runout salss will be coming. Gets about 900km to a tank. The petrol version is very heavy on the gas, so is the kluger.
    Avoid the craptiva, unreliable.

  • +2

Territories are good SUVs. You might luck out with a Challenger Sport with the end of year sales. They offer proper 4WD and good towing capacity.

Thanks, I do like Isuzu but my family is not ready to accept it.

will they accept a toyota estima/tarago or a honda odyssey? all made in japan and will crap all over any usa/eu made seven seater at that price range.

  • Kluger is the only one listed that will fit 7 people in somewhat comfort. Also look at Nissan Pathfinder or Mazda CX9

If you are not using the 7 seats that often don't overlook the Kia Sorento which has won plenty of awards

    • Thanks but 7 seats will not be used often. Only my family flies back, there will be no use for the last 2 seats.

Captiva has had a terrible reputation for reliability, resale value will suffer. Dodge/Fiat twins also have terrible reputation. I would avoid these and be surprised if anyone gives them a vote. Put Santa Fe and Sorrento on your list to look at.

Are you ever going to want to tow? Or get off the beaten track? Why not consider a people mover? People mover will offer more interior space.

    • Thanks.

I have a captiva and it's been fantastic.. not so great on fuel but awesome for towing.

      • +1

We had an earlier model Captiva, and while a nice enough car to drive did have some niggling issues. The tyres wore quite quickly, the fuel gauge sender died, the climate control started to randomly turn on or off, a rear door handle broke and one of the power windows was playing up.

It also had next to no space in the luggage area with 7 seats in use - one of the reasons we traded it, but the electrical niggles were a big incentive too..

    mitsubishi outlander 7 seater diesel

  • +13

For the love of God avoid the Dodge.

  • +2

Yep, any of the Mitsubishis are good. There's a 2wd 7 seater for under $30k drive away, but personally I would go the bigger petrol engine or preferably, the diesel.

  • I like the Toyota Klugers - something like this? http://www.carsales.com.au/dealer/details/Toyota-Kluger-2015…

    • Yes good find I like Klugers too.

  • +5

How long are they visiting? Isn't it more economical to rent a bigger car,or even two cars to make things more flexible?

    • +3

Yeah who buys a car for holidaying relo's? Hire one….

      • They are making a visit for three months, and we are expecting other visitors too once they get back. Also, there might be a new addition to our family shortly.

Does you partner know this or is it a "oops I did again" surprise ?

        • @whooah1979: NO comments. I am single btw.

    Audi Q5

    • +1

Maintenance will go high. Not looking for a European car at this stage.

    • Q5 is a five seater. Q7 would be nice, but not in this price range.

  • Mazda CX-5 Akera Diesel.
    $47 after negotiation.

    Love it.

    Every feature under the sun.

Edit - Just saw that you need 7 seater - CX-9 would be my choice but out of your range.

    Good Luck

    • -4

$47?? Where can I buy this $47 SUV?

      • That's what I paid in NSW

  • +2

Get a Tarago, unless you really plan on climbing mountains and going off-road

      ok thanks.

Is this an independence day - resurgence reference? God I love that movie.

      • +1

Queen's blood splatter on the windscreen would be nice!!

I know you are looking for SUV but my vote is for Honda Odyssey. Its very comfortable for 7 people with ample space for luggage when compared to other's… Within your budget. Go check it out…Dont go by looks if you are looking for a comfortable ride for long drives

  • Prius V. Workmate has it, constant 4L/100kms city driving.. like 800kms+ per tank easy.

I personally don't like throwing my money to fill up everytime. Cost of ownership should be lowest of the above too.

    • is that a 7 seat vehicle?

      • +1

        Yes, 7 seats.

    • +1

      Never a Prius.

  • Territory will be ok but only if two of your visiting family are children or very small adults as the rearmost seats don't offer that much legroom and will be uncomfortable on a longish journey.

  • Try and get something Japanese. Alot of the options you have listed have poor reputations.

  • +3

+1 for the MU-X! Altho the 5 speed auto box isnt anything fancy

    • Would love features.

    • It isnt but being its an Alison 5spd (used in a variety of 4wds inc 100/105 series landcruisers) it is literally bulletproof.

I am expecting Suzuki dealer advice

    Kia Carnival ftw.

Avoid the Captiva, Freemont, Journey and Pathfinder. Take a look at new and second hand for the Sorento, Kluger, CX-9, Territory and Santa Fe.

The Kluger and old CX-9 are heavy on fuel.

We bought a second hand 2015 SLi Sorento and it's been great.

  • I think you've said no to MU-X but if I had my time again I'd potentially switch..

    https://www.isuzuute.com.au/isuzu-deals/current-offers.aspx?…

    • LS T is convincing, will note down in the list for a test drive.

  • Definitely consider the Santa Fe. The rear 2 seats can sit an adult in comfort unlike some of the other 7 seater SUVs I've seen where you can barely get a kid into them.

    • +1 for Sorento/Santa Fe. I got a new Si Sorento for 34k on the road a couple of years ago. Fantastic vehicle for the money and no issues in 3 years. I am 185cm and no issues in the back for a couple of hours.

    • Ok will add in the list but this two cars are over 40k right? correct me if I am wrong.

  • +2

7 seat SUV doesn't really work for comfort unless you only have little kids in the back row. Keep in mind that once you deploy the 3rd row, luggage space is almost non-existent.

For true 7 seat capability, look at a people mover. They also handle better than most SUVs as they have a lower centre of gravity.

We've had the following 7 seaters in the past 15(?) years. Would always go with the people mover style.

Toyota Avensis Verso (a GLX and an Ultima): Loved it! So good we bought a 2nd one when the first one came up for renewal.

Holden Captiva Diesel with the 4 speed Auto. Great car. Reliable (maybe got a good one. Great economy (8L/100km) until they did a software update to the transmission - then it went to double figures:-(. It was gutless up hills, not enough gears to stay on the power band.

Mitsubishi Outlander (That's the same as the Freemont isn't it?). 4 cyl Petrol. Reliable. 3rd row looked like an afterthought. CVT started making weird noises at 20,000km. Can't remember much else.

Holden Captiva V6 petrol with 6 speed auto. Reliable (again, maybe we got a good one or we didn't have it long enough) Went reasonably well when you put the boot in. Average fuel economy was around 16L/100km.

Current Honda Odyssey Luxury. It's brilliant! Gutless but brilliant. Double figures fuel economy. Would choose again.

She's had some others as short termers, can't remember them all. V6 Tarago was quite awesome but probably out of your budget. They are faster over the quarter mile than a Phase 2 GTHO. Effortless overtaking up to 160kph with 6x 100kg males and a weekends luggage on board.

I'd recommend you look closely at how the seat deploys, how much luggage space there is with the seat up & down (sometimes there is room for soft bags under the seat). How the middle row seat folding mechanism works from outside the car and from the third row and how you access the third row. Generally, anyone over 60 will have difficulty getting into row three in an SUV, slightly less so in a people mover.

I can't vouch for the long term reliability as wife turns her cars over anywhere from 20,000km to 50,000km depending on how the fleet manager feels and how the used car market is going.

    • V6 Tarago

Op could get a high spec xr50, an e51 or a midrange e52 for $40k. Any of these will have more toys, luxury and space than a Hyundai/kia/ford/Gm.

    • Very detailed information. Thank you.

    • No. This is too beautiful to drive.

      • Or possibly the worst looking vehicle since the ssanyong stavic.

        • You surely haven't seen the multipla yet.

  • A Demo holden Colorado 7 can be had for around 40 -42K for the LTZ model.

  • +4

Just dont get a Captiva got to be the worst SUV on the road

    • Why are Captiva's the worst SUV?

      • Anything Gm is bad. Ford isn't far behind.

Mechanics love Gm and ford btw. That's how many of the stay in business.

    • Never getting a Holden. No chance.

  • get a pajero

    • Who is selling for 40k? (2015/16 model with near new condition + economic)

  • +1

Ford Territiry is the safest and best SUV this side of a X5.

If new euro is out of your budget nothing comes close and the gearbox and stability control and safety system in the territory are all german.

    safety
    repair and service cost
    reliability
fits 3 child seats in the back seat
    tows
    its unbreakable
heaps and heaps and heaps of storage space
proper 60/40 AWD not on demand like EVERY single other SUV other then the Merc and X5
One of the best overall cars i have owned or driven and i have had everything really

    Only bad points are
    typical ford finish
Fuel consumption for the petrol AWD is not the best
Not a proper off road 4WD but much more capable then others on your list
lacks some of the techo wizardy you find in some other cars like self parking, electric tailgate etc

The AWD titanium or ghia is the pick and with your budget you will get one near new

If you can do a station wagon over the SUV check out the new Mercedes shooting brake c class, i picked one up for $58k as a demonstrator for a friend allot of car for the money but i would not want to own it after warranty, with fixed price servicing its not too pricey to own.

Oh and stay away form dodge/fiat/jeep and the toyota kluger is just a fail of a car, whoever thought it was a good idea to put a suv body on a camary chassis should be shot, they cant fit much in, are essentially FWD only as the rear diff is the size of a apple and if you change direction quickly it will tip over, very dangerous car that should be banned

    • Thanks. What is your opinion on this-http://www.carsales.com.au/demo/details/Mitsubishi-Outlander-2016/OAG-AD-13654004/?Cr=4

  • If you can wait, you should look at 2017 peugeot 5008…..i have 2013 pug 5008,no regrets.

    • Never a holden, Never a peugeot. Thanks btw.

      • +1

The Peugeot is a Mitsubishi under the skin.

  • Did you end up buying anything?

  • ^

    • No, we just rented. $40k was too much.
