So Trump wins... Now what?

Looks like Trump is gonna win. Aside from the usual "world is gonna end" "what happened to humanity" type of statements, what are some of the potential real threats? Interest rate hikes? End of globalization? Rise of new wave of racism?

What's your opinion?

That's precisely the point frostman is trying to make, figureheads are not powerbrokers!

  • +1

We were screwed either way. One is a barking dog and the other is a sly snake. Go democracy, the only system that makes you chose between shit and super shit not knowing who's which, all under the banner of free choice and people power.

Anyhow, civilsations have come and gone. Nations ascend and then they descend. P

    End of times is nigh.

  • I firmly maintain Trump's in it for the lulz.

  • Life goes on.

  • -6

This whole thing is a mess. There are videos and Facebook posts of people being attacked by rednecks. Trumps rhetoric allowed this which was the real fear.

    • +6

Really? Where are these videos of people being attacked by rednecks??

Unlike you, I actually have footage of attacks that are occurring over there, not by rednecks, but by the 'tolerant' left, Hillary supporters.

      Viewer discretion advised

I saw that video too. It is completely not on and is included in this collation of some Day 1 events:
        https://twitter.com/i/moments/796417517157830656

        Trump has bitterly divided people.

        • +4

Do you think Trump has though? Or people were already divided and Trump has given them the opportunity to use him as a scapegoat? I don't know, but the behaviour I'm seeing is absolutely appalling. Imagine if this was reversed.

        • +4

No the clinton campaign has bitterly divided people. They are aware that the majority of people who identify as 'Black' or 'Hispanic' support the DNC

They do everything to encourage the idea that Trump is a racist, Trump is the candidate of rednecks, Trump is the candidate who hates you.

Where is Obama? Why does he not denounce the violence? He is the half Black half White president who was supposed to unite the country, but the needs of the party come first

      • +6

I wish people could learn to defend themselves, breaks me to see this.

        People disappoint me.

It's a democracy that's voted, and yet, when they vote, they protest without even giving him a shot. And then people think it's okay to judge someone over who they voted for because they want change. And then attack their ideals because it doesn't suit them.

It's unbelievable. Humanity will never get to a state we're all pretending it will get to.

    • +4

      greentea
The pro-Hillary and anti-Trumps are the ones doing the attacking, egged on by the media and movements such as BLM. They are the ones who have divided people, not Trump.
The fact you and people like you still do not see that is the reason why Trump has won..

      sheesh..

      • So instead of wondering why groups like BLM even appear (the incessant use of force to deal with problems - square peg on round hole, blow the hole up kinda thing) at some point people will have enough and retaliate. Instead of fueling the divide with fire (as Trump does) why not instead address the problem of racial inequality and social disadvantage?

Trump won because people have had enough of the status quo. The Dems stupidly provided a candidate that represents what the people hate.

BTW, as from my link, you can clearly see that the attacks are coming from both sides, not just one. sheesh.

        • You'd be chasing your own tail till the end of time trying to uncover hard facts as to why groups that set out to cause unrest "suddenly appears"

        • +1

@payton: The facts are there for those who want to know the truth

          https://i.redd.it/bxfoueku08xx.png

This goes beyond Republican vs Democrat, this is an organised effort to promote racial division so that people will ignore the real problems ( wealth division )

    • There are videos and Facebook posts of people being attacked by rednecks

Any link to that video ?
Almost all of the contents on your link are about graffiti and personal anecdotes, which anyone with an agenda can easily fabricate.
A writing of "Trump!" near a door handle formed part of a collection of tweets about racist episodes, seriously?

meanwhile, a violent crowd attacked a black woman guarding Trump’s Hollywood star
      https://www.rt.com/usa/364631-crowd-attacks-homeless-trump/
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRM5cYInwxo

and pro-Hillary supporters turned to public nuisance and riots when they didn't get what they want.

      • +1

The stereotype is that 'rednecks' are violent. The extreme left wing feels justified in causing their own violence in response to a stereotype

    • +1

People see through this. Fake news reports even in the age have been exposed and reporters twitter accounts banned.

It just shows how much people are scum that they lie and cheat to win

America was dounded on freedom of speach. How can protesters who are trying to suppress trumps voice claim to be American when they are violating the foundation of what America is??!?!?

      People have lost their mind.

  • US stocks continued a small rise overnight. Hopefully the ASX follows again today.

  • It will be interesting to see if Trump breaks promises to the gun lobby.

    DONALD J. TRUMP’S VISION

Empower law-abiding gun owners to defend themselves. Law enforcement does a tremendous job, but they can’t be everywhere all of the time.

Defend the rights of law-abiding gun owners:
Military bases and recruiting centers - to have a strong military, we need to allow them to defend themselves
National right to carry – should be legal in all 50 states
Background checks - we need to fix the system we have and make it work as intended. What we don’t need to do is expand a broken system.
Gun and magazine bans - the government has no business dictating what types of firearms good, honest people are allowed to own

Does a leader actually typify a country?

Is Clinton/Bush/Obama/Trump a closer representation of the US people?

Is Turnbull a better portrayal of what an Australian is, than say Abbott. (or Rudd/Gillard)

What about other countries Putin and Russia, Merkal and Germany?
(I also realised that I don't even know the name of the PM in the UK)

Would Tony Blair be close? - I'm thinking of the Simpsons episode where he greeted the Simpsons when they visited the UK.

    • Maybe true of the US but not Australia,
In the US they vote for the person (president), here it's all about the party. You wouldn't have a the president replaced every other week with another party leader in the US.

Not sure of European countries / Russia but the videos I have seen of Putin show him to be quite reasonable, compassionate and skeptical.

Please learn the truth, Trump is the candidate of the working class not the corporate America.

The media has been very effective in making Trump look bad.

He is the first Republican EVER to support the LGBT community, to address the real cause of problems in the Black community - POVERTY.

Both of Australias political parties have supported our border security. We are not all racist.

      • -2

He is the first Republican EVER to support the LGBT community

Lip service, and pretty terrible lip service at that. If he were supportive, he wouldn't have chosen the far-right nutjob Mike Pence as his VP. The man opposes the LGBT community with every fiber of his body.

Let's see just how supportive Trump is when the Republicans go after every bit of anti-discrimination and equality legislation they can, and he stands idly by doing nothing.

      • rememberme: He is the first Republican EVER to support the LGBT community…

This is simply not the case. (And he did choose Pence).

Saw this video which is an interview with Julian Assange. Talks about the email leaks, election and a few other things. Really eye opening -

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_sbT3_9dJY4

    • -2

The Wikileaks AMA on Reddit took a turn south when people started asking them questions about the timing of their leaks. They only release the DNC scheme to sabotage Bernie and get Hillary in AFTER Bernie was well out of the picture. They didn't release ANY republican stuff even though Assange said they had information on Trump, his excuse was "it wasn't that interesting" so now the bi-partisan non-biased Wikileaks are deciding what interesting and whats not. They released all Hillaries emails, most of that was pretty boring.

They deserve both credit and criticism where it is due. Assange really needs to face his charges though. How long does he really want to live in that embassy for?

      • They found 2 women to accuse him of rape after wikileaks became famous.

        Sound familiar?

      • +1

If he is in the embassy for free, then he is the ultimate Ozbargainer

        • -1

Downvotes for truth, now I know how Snowden feels. Send me downvotes, with each one I get stronger!

    • Assange has a conflict of interests, in that, under Trump, he is 99% less likely to be extradited to the US and might even be thanked for continually embarrassing Hillary.

      • +2

That is his gamble, Trump has never said anything other than he is a traitor

    http://www.salon.com/2016/11/09/the-hillary-clinton-campaign…

You couldn't make this stuff up.

    • Normally Salon do their best to make stuff up too. But the Wikileaks of the DNC are damning. It's a shame, I don't think Bernie would have ever made it, he was also going to make changes, but I think the media were doing everything they could to make his ideas seem crazier than they were. There was a post on Reddit of a young Bernie Sanders being carried away by police and being subsequently arrested during a protest for equal rights for black people. I can't see Donald Trump ever getting dirty to help other people out, or Hillary.

  • Now what!? Who cares, we have Malcom Turnbull.

    • +5

Let's hope we never get Shorten. That guy is a lightweight.

  • +5

FWIW Trump has played his cards correctly after winning the election.
He could've gloated against Obama and others who attacked him during the campaign months but no, he took a humble and positive stance.
A smart move given that it stabilised the stock market after the initial uncertainty. The downturn was reversed in less than 24H

As a result, the media is running low on topics in which to attack him. The attention now gets shifted towards the pro-Hillary protesters having a tantrum and mild stuff like

    • will he relinquish control of his massive empire so as not to be seen as having conflict of interest
    • comments from past employees on his leadership style and so on

Also, his personal fortunes are now tied even closer to how he runs the presidency. Doubt he would take any rash actions from now on.

    • The most sensible comment I've read on here so far.

  • Im pretty sure it cant be all that bad ? Excuse me, I have to go and finish my underground bunker :P

Make no mistake, Trump's win was one of the greatest political wins of all time. Even Bill Clinton called Trump and said words to that effect. Mind you, that was from Bill, who had more respect for Monica's oval orafice than the Presidential Oval Office!
Seriously, a great win for Trump. Looking forward to seeing what he can do.

  • +11

Trump's first day at the Oval Office after being elected President.

First briefing by the CIA, Pentagon, FBI:

Trump: We must destroy ISIS immediately. No delays.

CIA: We cannot do that, sir. We created them along with Turkey, Saudi, Qatar and others.

    Trump: The Democrats created them.

CIA: We created ISIS, sir. You need them or else you would lose funding from the natural gas lobby.

Trump: Stop funding Pakistan. Let India deal with them.

    CIA: We can't do that.

    Trump: Why is that?

CIA: India will cut Balochistan out of Pak.

    Trump: I don't care.

CIA: India will have peace in Kashmir. They will stop buying our weapons. They will become a superpower. We have to fund Pakistan to keep India busy in Kashmir.

Trump: But you have to destroy the Taliban.

CIA: Sir, we can't do that. We created the Taliban to keep Russia in check during the 80s. Now they are keeping Pakistan busy and away from their nukes.

Trump: We have to destroy terror sponsoring regimes in the Middle East. Let us start with the Saudis.

Pentagon: Sir, we can't do that. We created those regimes because we wanted their oil. We can't have democracy there, otherwise their people will get that oil - and we cannot let their people own it.

Trump: Then, let us invade Iran.

Pentagon: We cannot do that either, sir.

    Trump: Why not?

CIA: We are talking to them, sir.

    Trump: What? Why?

CIA: We want our Stealth Drones back. If we attack them, Russia will obliterate us as they did to our buddy ISIS in Syria. Besides we need Iran to keep Israel in check.

Trump: Then let us invade Iraq again.

CIA: Sir, our friends (ISIS) are already occupying 1/3rd of Iraq.

Trump: Why not the whole of Iraq?

CIA: We need the Shi'ite govt of Iraq to keep ISIS in check.

Trump: I am banning Muslims from entering US.

    FBI: We can't do that.

    Trump: Why not?

FBI: Then our own population will become fearless.

Trump: I am deporting all illegal immigrants to south of the border.

Border patrol: You can't do that, sir.

    Trump: Why not?

Border patrol: If they're gone, who will build the wall?

Trump: I am banning H1B visas.

    USCIS: You cannot do that.

    Trump: Why?

Chief of Staff: If you do so, we'll have to outsource White House operations to Bangalore. Which is in India.

Trump (sweating profusely by now): What the hell should I do as President???

CIA: Enjoy the White House, sir! We will take care of the rest!

I thought that ozbargain stayed away from politics. It should. There are enough forums to discuss political issues, but few that can be relied on to help people find good value in the market. I have very strong opinions about the US election, but I will refrain from expressing them here. The moderators would do well to remove this discussion topic from the site. I think asking people advice on a range of topics, most often about what products to buy or sometimes real life situations, is a good thing. I love a good political discussion, but unless you want to set up a sister sight where we can talk about it, lts best left alone.

I don't get Trump but I get why people voted for him.

Clinton is the exact embodiment of the status quo. She's been in politics all her life & her husband had two terms as the commander in chief of the most powerful nation & yet the levels of inequality in America have never been higher.

Clinton is polished. She did not come across as real or genuine. Why continue to vote for the same rhetoric when things continue to get worse?

Trump did and said everything you shouldn't. He was so off script and even deserted by his own party!

Brexit clearly illustrated people's frustrations and this has magnified it ten fold.

    • -1

I get why people voted for him.

A seasoned con man shooting fish in a barrel: shouting nonsense to clueless, over-medicated neck tattoos. Nonsense to anyone with a brain, but it was what they wanted to hear.

her husband had two terms as the commander in chief of the most powerful nation & yet the levels of inequality in America have never been higher.

Are you daring conflate his two terms with the current state of inequity in the US?
      Were you asleep from 2000-2008?

The irrefutable fact remains: under Bill Clinton, the US had the lowest unemployment and greatest prosperity since the 50s. Current brand of shit started with GW.

      • +1

"shouting nonsense to clueless, over-medicated neck tattoos"

I was unaware this demographic was so prominent in Pennsylvania, Florida, Ohio etc. Every politician states what the general public wants to hear. This is hardly a new notion.

        "Were you asleep from 2000-2008?
Unemployment in Jan-00 was 4% & come Jan-08 it was 5% (& 7.5% by Dec-08). Far from irreutable it would seem.

Prosperity can be measured by many means. US GDP undeniably increased near enough year on year during this time period. Tick. However, then take a look at the real median household income over the same period. It decreases signifcantly. Then look from 2008 to present day & guess what? It continues to decline by a significant margin.

It's the Left's fault by offering no real alternative & being so out of touch.

I dislike Trump, any sane person surely does but I am hopeful? quietly optimistic? He will be successful.

        • Every politician states what the general public wants to hear. This is hardly a new notion.

And yet…he claimed to not be a politician, thus his point of difference to the "establishment".
His supporters were blinded by stupidity, optimism, fear or a combination to fall for it.

Unemployment in Jan-00 was 4% & come Jan-08 it was 5% (& 7.5% by Dec-08). Far from irreutable it would seem.

Do you realise what you've just done? You regurgitated figures covering GW's two terms, thus confirming his administration dug the hole that two Obama terms have tried to recover from. Despite the Repuglicon-fueled GFC, they're in better shape now than 2008.

Clinton repaired, Bush destroyed, Obama repaired…Trump?

The only workforce in the US that can compete globally are the two million or so who are paid 25c/hr.
          They are all incarcerated.

On the global playing field, the US hasn't a hope.

          He will be successful

Based on dozens of his failed business ventures? His reality TV show? His ability to BS?
Rest assured, he'll be impeached in short order.

The week after the election took place, one of my friends in the US was told to go back to Africa Nigger at Starbucks. That's Trump's America for you. Racism has already been started; which means that if you are not white, then you are an outsider. Thanks the Lord, I don't belong to the Trump-land yay!!!

Yeah and Democrat people are rioting and hurting people and destroying property. But at least they aren't SAYING anything politically incorrect. Don't want to offend anyone.

Tempers are high on all sides. I have a wait and see attitude. He is a class A Sxxx talker, but the system is broken and really needs shaking up. I have hope. No matter how good or bad he ends up being, that is obvious to even Americans now and maybe we will actually get some change. You got to admit all these police black lives matter murders reached epic conditions under the second term of an African-American Democrat president. Democrats in power don't give a sxxx. I've listened to some good podcasts on it, both sides. A great one was the last Crass to Mouth, all left Democrats, a female, an African-American, and a gay male. They all voted Hilary. They were pretty positive on the outcome. And one made a great point that during the entire election not a single Democrat believed a single thing out of Hillary's mouth, and if you believed a single thing out of Trump's mouth you are delusional…

And you know, for all the crap people have somewhat justified given G W Bush, look at all his first round appointees. He was the first President to give so many top positions to minorities. The Democrats never did. Condoleezza Rice, Colin Powell, and so many many more. But hey, he is white and Republican so is a sexist racist…

And you know what? XXXX the Democrats. They deliberately conspired against Bernie in favor of Hillary. They lost the election. If they hadn't decided to go with a person under so many criminal investigations, they could EASILY have won the election. By a far margin. Easily. Nobody would argue that. But these broken fools back that… thing.

I agree with Guliani that the Clintons are a frigging blight on America. I hope this election finally means the end of their destructive influence.

      • -3

so many top positions to minorities.

You forgot Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, he of Patriot Act II. But hey, GW and his boys are nice guys, right? Poor Colin Powell looked constipated before the UN in 2003, such was his discomfort in perjuring himself for no noble cause. They used, and ruined, his good reputation.

Oh look, no WMDs. Oh look, CIA exporting H north into Europe. Oh look, mass-murder. Oh look, political assassinations. Oh look, illegal wiretaps. Oh look, veterans with PTSD. Oh look, cops (ex military) shooting civilians.

You got to admit all these police black lives matter murders reached epic conditions under the second term of an African-American Democrat president.

You're confusing Federal and State/City. The latter recruits their Police, and favour veterans because there's less training needed for all their new "toys". Veterans that were recruited under revised entry criteria that lowered minimum IQ and criminal record standards. Done to extend deployment rotation and increase cannon fodder particularly ahead of the "surge".

So as a result of GW's invasions and other BS, we enjoy the legacy of all this new division. Why?
Because this is what happens when we set forth, get our arses kicked in several ways (including financially) and finally put up the walls and turn on each other.

        Bliss.

        • Has Obama really spoken up? No. They could easily make the issue federal under civil rights hate crime grounds and say no way we are not going to investigate and if necessary prosecute properly, not just let the local DA and judges say "no worries, just let him go".

        • Obama did speak up, but it was largely lip-service — an appeal for calm.

For the Fed to impose such laws onto the States would contravene The Tenth Amendment.

"The Supreme Court rarely declares laws unconstitutional for violating the Tenth Amendment. In the modern era, the Court has only done so where the federal government compels the states to enforce federal statutes."

Wonder why there's such variation in laws between States? It's in the Constitution!

    • -2
