  • Price match at Harvey Norman and utilise 2 or 3 of those Amex $100 back offers through gift cards?
    Could get some major savings

    • HN doesn't sell the EZ kit, but worth a try.

  • Great camera and price.

  • Very tempting. Want to buy my first serious camera but thinking about spending more and getting Sony A6500 for the extra mp and 4k capability. Or is this a true bargain and i could buy this to learn, and sell at same price a year or two later?

I think the micro four thirds system (which includes Olympus and Panasonic) has many advantages over Sony's system. The selection of m43 lenses is unparalleled, and their size and weight is significantly lower as well. I don't think the extra megapixels provided by the Sony sensor makes that much of a difference - implementation seems to matter more, and the EM10II gets great results. Sony's larger sensor will provide some gains at higher ISOs, but Olympus compensates for this by having best in class In Body Image Stabilization.

      • Selection of lenses is no longer an issue on the Sony FE, size and weight the Sony is smaller and lighter. ISO difference is about a stop of light. Sony's latest cameras all have IBIS.

        • Sure, Sony's system is good. But m43 has an outstanding selection of lenses and (from what I understand) class leading IBIS.

As for weight: I'm seeing 390g for the EM10II vs. 453g for the A6500. And the difference is larger for the associated lenses.

Both systems offer a lot, and they're good at slightly different things. But I do think the things I listed are advantages for m43 (however slim).

        • Sony's latest cameras all have IBIS.

          not at the e-m10 price

        • @aldoduco: True, I didn't know it had to have it at that price. Do take sensor size into consideration though.

        • But the A7ii, A7r2, and a6500 are all likely to be about $4000, 2300, and 1800-2200 for the bodies only??

        • I respectfully disagree with the sony being smaller and lighter.

          A7II with 24-70 f/4 vs EM10-II with 12-40 f/2.8: http://camerasize.com/compact/#579.393,633.412,gd,t

Sony is still marginally larger and heavier - sure the A7II will have better image quality, but for a lot of people, the M43 solution falls into the "good enough IQ" basket for most tasks, and has a generally more affordable selection of lenses.

        • @ankor: When on special, you're probably looking at $1700, $3400, $2000 for A7II, A7R2, A6500

        • @qwijibo:

Well that sounds better. I'd love to go FF, but for my usage, there's just no requirement to do so.

I'd also love the a6500, but I just can't justify spending that much money on a camera body when I don't religiously bird, or shoot action every weekend. After about a year with the a6000, the sony apsc lineup is as large as I'll go.

thanks to both. i think i might get this, i guess 4k recording is not big deal and my galaxy s6 can do that.

main focus will be photo quality. can i expect to be wowed at the difference to smartphone photos, when using this kit lens?

        • Definitely. The kit lens are good enough for daily use.

        • Seconding @endlesstrail - the EM10II will give you much better results than a smartphone, especially if you're willing to do some postprocessing (which is actually quite fun, imo). I think this kit lens is pretty well-regarded, but you could probably get $200 for it from Ebay, which you could put towards one of the stellar m43 lenses (like the Olympus 45mm or the Panasonic 20mm).

At the end of the day, it depends on what you're after. I decided on the m43 system because I wanted something compact, mainly for travelling.

Sony uses a bigger sensor (APS) and thus, have bigger lens in general, even if they are able to design a really compact body.

All else being equal, bigger sensors are generally better than small sensors and generate less noise at high ISO.

Very unlikely that you'll be able to sell this for anywhere near the same price. There are so many specials, cash backs, refurbs, new models etc. available that cameras (bodies) don't hold their value like they used to. The flip side is if you don't NEED to latest features you can get some great bargains buying pre-owned gear "to learn".

The point made above is also very important. If you want to seriously get into photography it's more important to look at the availability of lenses and other accessories than a particular camera. In the end the cost of that will far exceed the initial cost.

    Here's a useful comparison between the EM10II and the Sony A6000: http://www.cameralabs.com/reviews/Olympus_OMD_EM10_Mark_II/o…

Bottom line: there are advantages on both sides, so it depends on what you prioritize, but I think the EM10II at this price is a great value that will hold its value well.

    • I am in the same predicament and I will miss Nikon's ability to edit colours in camera. That was the best feature. It meant that many photos were good enough and I didn't have to post edit in photoshop. I know none of the mirrorless can do this. I prefer my photos a bit warmer. Sony's photos are all very cool and bright. I'm not a big fan.

Does anyone know which external flash is better? Sony or Olympus? External flash is a must for any photographer. Just the basic one.

      • +1

I shoot raw and edit in Lightroom, so I'm not tuned in to jpeg processing, but I've heard good things about the Olympus Pen-F photo modes - that might give you some of the flexibility you're looking for.

I never shoot with flash (and I never miss it, except when shooting macro), but this thread seems useful on the topic of m43 flash: https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3640563

      • Meike MK-320P for MFT, TTL for $90 should be enough for most.

  • Is it in store only? Are those accessories bonus included without the need to ask the TGG staff?

    • Online Only, VISA and Accessories via redemption so no need to ask staff anyway

  • do they sell the longer lens too? That's what I'll probably use my store credit for.
Can you use store credit in ebay store?

    • No and no.

This camera is great. Id recommend the panasonic 25mm prime lens for some very high quality images. This camera has held its value well in 12 months and the jump to the newer models with 20mp sensors is so far only for higher end models and doesnt gain much quality.

I was just looking at some sample images and they look very very impressive. I think it is time for me to move away from smartphone camera. This price seems really great with $150 cashback, accessories pack and $100-$200 store credit included. I don't think there would be a better camera around this sort of price?? Was originally considering paying a bit more for Sony A6500 or maybe going for a DSLR Canon 80D but it all gets a bit confusing as they all have their pros/cons.

This one seems like it would be perfect as I plan to do some travel in the near future too. Only thing that is a little concern about this one is the lack of waterproofing. Does that mean don't submerge it, or you shouldn't even use it in the rain?

      • It's only heavy rain that I'd worry about with this camera. Anyway, with anything more than a light shower you'll want to keep the camera under cover to keep water off the lens.

      • cash back and store credit also apply to the e-m5 ii

I have the mk i of this Camera and have added a few more lenses now. It is great camera at a nice size - very good for travel and city walking. I'm thinking of getting a second one (mk ii).

The 14-42mm EZ lens works well in decent light and is small and unobtrusive. There are lots of lens choices that you can consider adding later as you get used to how you use it.

I walked around Melbourne for a couple of days using an Olympus 17mm (f1.8) lens and sometimes an Olympus 45mm (f1.8) and they performed well on the E-M10, especially indoors like galleries and such, but the 14-42mm (which I also had) was very versatile when I wanted some zoom ability without fussing over lens changes.

I've never had a camera that was weather sealed. If its raining I leave it in my bag, or shoot from undercover. Hasn't been a problem for me.

I've got the EM-10 MK II for 4 months now and I am very happy with the camera, also keep in mind you are probably not comparing apples when you are comparing with the Sony A6500, you should be comparing the EM-5 MK II vs the a6500. Before my purchase I was tossing up between the EM-10 MK II vs a5100 vs a6300. I ended up settling for the Olympus based on features, price, weight and lens selection.

Don't forgot to add the lens into the equation because I promise you once you start the body price is the cheapest of you investment, if your camera doesn't have IBIS then you would need to buy lens that has stabilisation.

I traveled overseas for a month with the camera carrying 14-42mmEZ stock lens, M.Zuiko Digital 45mm f1.8 and LUMIX G Leica DG Summilux 15mm f/1.7 ASPH. These three lenses covered all my shooting needs although I was mainly in metro scenarios so there was no need for a extreme zoom lens. All this fit into a small back pack and never did it feel heavy or a burden to carry, looking back if the stock lens wasn't so thin, I would have just left it at home because I actually never used it.

In terms of weatherproofing, I didn't get into situations where there was high wind, in heavy rain I was able to take photos under cover so it didn't really matter much for me.

For the price with all the discounts, I think it's a no brainer.

  • +1

In heavy rain weather proof bodies are better but require matching weatherproof lenses.

  • It is a shame that Good Guys don't carry lenses as would have liked to put the $100 credit towards the 40-150mm zoom lens.

  • did anyone else have trouble finding stock of this? i had to order for delivery because no stores in NSW had it. Mine is coming from QLD. also just noticed JB has it for $799 today, so will claim price guarantee.

Anyone know from past experience when we can expect the $100 credit? i have something i need to buy now.

    • T&C says Dec 2nd

  • 20% from Ted's ebay. better buy it from them than $100 store credit.

    • Theirs comes to $720 + shipping. But they don't come with the EZ lens, which apparently is better. I hope it's worth the extra $100 odd.

On another note, I noticed some inconsistencies with the Good Guys store credit promo. Firstly they say no previously earned store credits can be used, then they say they CAN be used in the full T&C's. They also say that it does not apply for "delivery" but the wording is a bit ambiguous and I think they must surely mean delivery does not count towards the minimum spend. And, this promotion is for online orders. Not to mention no stores in NSW had stock of the camera.. Very very odd and confusing. If they try and deny the store credit I will return the order and buy it from somewhere else. If they give me the price guarantee + $100 store credit I will be happy.

        It is EZ

Edit: you can use previous store credit, but it wont count for the promotion. let's say your item is $900 but you use a previous $50 store credit. you will get $100 instead of $200 store credit

Edit2: I suggest to hold for the price guarantee until you get your store credit. save a screenshot from JB ;)

        • Oh so it is, the PZ made me think it was the other lens :P.

I didn't use a store credit so that doesn't matter, just thought it was weird the way they wrote two different things. And they say purchases "OF" delivery not for, so I think I am safe there. They must mean that delivery doesn't count towards the spend to receive the credit.

I sent them a message via their contact form just to confirm they will give me the price guarantee and that I will be eligible for the store credit. Hope to hear from them soon. I have taken a screenshot, but I don't know if they will accept price guarantee at a later date, when the price might have gone up? Because it says they confirm the price. Anyway, it will still be over $700 so should be eligible for the credit anyway.

you have 30 days, it doesnt matter when was on sale during those 30 days. you only can do it once, so i would suggest to wait maybe others or even jb will reduce further in a few weeks. good luck
