  • This is pretty cool!

What's with the need for wireless, are people getting lazy?

    • +3

Good for hard to reach power points

    • +2

Being able to turn say an old air con remotely on your way home would be a good reason.. Also being able to set up schedules is a big reason. Using IFTTT.. The list goes on.

    • +3

I have three on the go in office. Two for turning things on and off where the plug is behind furniture and the other as a timer switch for a panel heater.

Since they're in the office it's not called being lazy, it's called improving productivity.

Turns my espresso machine on 30 minutes before I get up so it is warmed up and ready to go!

    Oh, and I am lazy!

Make sure you know what you are buying with this. Scheduling may be ideal but if you want a quick way to toggle an item on or off from your phone this is far from it. The app is clunky and there was at my last use no widget available for easy home screen toggle like that you get with life for a comparison

    • There are no widgets in official Wemo app (the one that allows remote control when away from home).
However, if you are at home on Wi-Fi, Wemo Widgets works just fine from any home screen.

I personally used some of my Google Rewards credits and old HTC Desire phone to run AutiomationManager for IoT with much more flexible and granular rules for scheduling and event triggering.

    • Latest update on Android has widgets now!

    • I don't find the app to be so clunky. Open up and press the button. With the latest firmwares the switching is rapid and dependable. No widget but for my usage I don't have a beef.

Another use case that I have is turning off appliances at a certain time every day. Quite happy to go to the switch and press the button to turn on my hifi amp (remember those?) but would always forget to turn off after use. Set up a rule to turn off at 9:00pm every day. Now no amp being left on for the weekend/week while we are away.

So I agree maxwellian one should be aware of one's use cases before one buys these switches.

Another way you can control these switches is from a terminal or with scripts on a server if you have one going 24/7. My Mac Mini runs continuously so I can control the switches without using the phone app.

  • I had to return both of Belkin switches as they kept loosing the wireless connection even in well covered WiFi areas.
Please note the switches will require re-setup after power outages.

True that they may be bit unstable with WiFi connection (out of box with old f/w). Mine have been fine though since I manged to upgrade them after lost of initial frustration.

What is not correct is that you have to set them up again after power outages - they will just come back automatically with saved setting after the power comes back on.

I've got 3 Wemo's and they all work fine.

      • After few weeks liaising with Belkin and numerous changes to my Archer D9 (channels, broadcast WiFi, etc..), I gave up. I upgraded the switch firmware and reinstalled the apps on several devices but did not retain the wireless settings.

        • I know what you mean. I had heaps of problems setting up my first two Wemos with Netgear R7000. After numerous factory resets of Wemos, I eventually got them to upgrade and work reliably.
When I bought the third one, I was dreading having to go through the same pain. I was pleasantly surprised when it connected and upgraded without any problems.

However at no stage did I have any of them lose settings. In my experience I had to do opposite - factory rest to start over again when I had issues with upgrading first two.

Anyway, overall I think they are good devices with two caveats:
          (1) May have issues with your Wi-Fi (but once they work, they appear to be fine and survive Access Point restarts and Power Outages)
          (2) Housing is too wide - covers both power points (Clipsal 2000). Their Insight Switch is narrower, but costs more due to other features (which I'm not interested in).

    • I had same issues. However I have a dual band Netgear router.
I noticed it was recommended that both the WEMO and the PHONE or Tablet with the WEMO APP installed be on the SAME band.
Once I did that I never had an issue.
My phone used 2.4GHZ and 5ghz where my tablet used 2.4 ghz and it rarely lost contact.
I use 4 of them (lounge Light. Bedroom Fan or Heater. Computer Light. and Tv ambience Light) and all work well. The Timer on them is brilliant. There's been a few updates for BOTH Wemo and the app so maybe they sorted the power issue.
If I had a complaint its that there's no WINDOWS app. Id love to be able to turn things on and off from my PC.

    • I had this issue too but when I replaced my modem/router with just a standalone modem + an independent wifi router, the problem went away. I think the switch-reset issue thing is modem/router specific. Note that my old router was a netcomm adsl2 modem router that I bought in 2005.

    • anybody use this one…any good?

    • Does this one come with Aust plug on both male & female sides?

  • Do these lose their programming (wifi config etc) if turned off at the switch?

    • +1

Not that I've noticed. The Application handles the configuration and setup.

    • +1

Not that I have seen in 3 years of use with power outages up to 12 hours. Don't know what happens if they are without power for extended periods.

  • I definitely recommend the Belkin insight switch http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Belkin-WeMo-Insight-Switch-Wirele…
comes down to 60.56 after applying 20% off
I bought one previously and paid 99 (!!!) and it was the best! Really easy to use and it notifies me when charging is complete. I use it for my rental property where I can put batteries for power tools on charge and leave the house.

here shows the comparison of these two products http://www.belkin.com/au/support-article?articleNum=42291

    • Probably good idea to get one of each. I can imagine the benefits of insight, but probably more than what I need for a lot of the devices I want to work with

  • Just out of curiosity - how does this connect when you're away from home and not on the same network … do i need to configure my home router or something ?

Or does it just .. somehow already have access from the internet via the app, to my router, into my wifi network, to the wemo switch without me having to configure anything ?

    • I imagine it talks to a server which your app connects to. Just like most IoT things nowadays.

      • Belkin has its own server. you don't need to set up anything else for the insight switch to work, not sure about this one tho.

        • Sorry, that's what I meant, a server (invisible to us) somewhere in the internet), not a hub at home etc.

  • I've had two units and they are problematic. Particularly when they lose connection and the repairing can be a ball breaker. I would not recommend them. Belkin are constantly upgrading the app and firmware. Biggest POS I've bought for a long time.
