    FML, I have a renewal coming up soon, so I was browsing for hosting. I should probably have checked OzBargain first, instead of going straight to VentraIP … not that it matters now, because I already missed out :(

    I'm lucky I only transferred my domain and was waiting for the transfer to complete before I bought hosting…

    I did take up the $1 domain deal thinking I could use it with a Google hosted site but I was wrong.

    Is it possible to get a $1 hosting deal as well?

      There should be no reason why you can't use it with a Google Hosted Site. You just need to use the free included DNS hosting to connect it.

      What hosting product of at Google are you using?

        I'm having dramas authenticating the domain with Google. It now goes to a new "G Suite" product which actually seems to be a paid service. I was hoping to just use the older free Google Sites (https://sites.google.com/) which I've used before.

          I'm doing my own testing at the moment so I'll get back to you. It should work. Provided you given the right instructions by Google and they haven't changed it to a premium feature for G Suite customers only.

          How good are you at setting up and managing DNS records? Do you know your way around or do you think you require a step-by-step guide.

          Step 1. Login to VIPControl and proceed to the DNS management area for the domain name in question.

          Step 2. From the section labelled “Custom Options” choose the “Web/Email Forwarding” section and start by making a Web Forwarder you want to redirect your naked domain name e.g. example.com permanently to the subdomain www.example.com

          Once completed leave this section of VIPControl Open and proceed to the next step.

          Step 3. Complete the verification of the domain name with Google. By using the Google Search Console

          Go to the Webmaster Tools Home Page https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/ Now you can get the verification process for your domain name started you want to use the naked domain name e.g. example.com not www.example.com.

          You want to do it TXT record verification, you'll be given a string to enter into VIPControl, this is done by choosing “add record” from the bottom. Enter the information given to you in webmaster tools into the box now showing and then add the record. Once completed leave this section of VIPControl Open and proceed to the next step.

          Return to Webmaster Tools to complete the verification process. Once the verification has been completed you are ready to proceed to the next step and set it up in the Google Sites interface.

          Step 4. Go to your Google Sites URL from the top right hand side click on the “gear icon” and choose “Manage Site” and add your domain name you will need to include www. You should be provided with instructions. But I'll also provide them as the next step below.

          Step 5. Return to VIPControl. Under “DNS Records” Confirm you don't already have a record existing for “www” You most likely will already have an a record you'll need to remove it once removed you will need to choose “add record” from the bottom and make a CNAME for www the address will be the one given to you most likely on the Google sites page which is most likely this one “ghs.googlehosted.com” Once you've added the record return to Google sites and complete any outstanding tasks that may be required over there.

          Step 6. Wait for propagation and then you're all done.

          Additionally: If you also want to use email at your domain name you can use the included email forwarding in VIPControl OR You can use Something like Zoho Mail’s free offering.

          Thanks for the detailed advice Kyle! I wasn't able to check last night, but this morning G-Suites informs me my domain is verified, so I will go ahead and see if I can get the web address change working this weekend.
