Harvey Norman: Canon 50D Body Only $842, save $300

270

Just saw this today.

Considering it's about what you'd be paying for a grey import BEFORE shipping I think it's a bargain and a half, and definitely the cheapest i've ever seen the body only for.

Works out even cheaper if you get a competitor to price match & beat it.
Works out even cheaper still if you go overseas a TRS it.

The deals with lenses aren't as attractive unfortunately.

interesting deal, but it's not a good camera to buy unless you already own a 4xxD or 5xxD because:

    1) the line's discontinued, the 60D was due out this Feb but didn't appear
    2) the sensor's IQ rating is lower than the 40D it replaced
    3) for the feature set, it's not a good price
    4) Canon lenses are notorious for being pricey, and not coming with lens hoods (to cost you another $50-70)

so good deal for beginner Canon users, irrelevant for others, and will make existing 40D/50D owners cry ;)

I agree on most points but the lens price thing stands out: compare Canon lenses to equivalent Nikon lenses and you usually will see Canon being cheaper.

as Veritas said, your fourth point is not entirely correct. Canon lenses are generally much much cheaper than Nikon Nikorr Lenses.

    • Rubbish. This is a fantastic camera, especially for the price. I own one.

      1) Nobody has any idea when the 60D is due. Canon never release this. I can tell you one thing about it.. it sure as hell won't be $850 :p
      2) Bollocks, it's on par if not a touch better. It's not head and shoulders better but it's not worse.
      3) Arguably it should have video. You can pay $1500 for a 7D or $1200 for a 550D and get video… or buy this spend the extra on a video camera. I challenge you to name something else it's lacking.
      4) Do you know anything about cannon man?!

It's only a good deal for new users if they want to pony up for a good lens to go with it. Otherwise if you're a newbie, buy a kit with two doge lenses until you find your style.

    • As others have already pointed out, Canon lenses are generally cheaper than similar Nikon/Nikkor lenses. Some people buy Canon specifically for their lenses. Not sure about the lens hoods, pretty bad if they have to be purchased separately.

Lens hoods are not included for lower end/consumer grade lenses. They are however included with all of their L series prosumer/professional lenses.

    thanks kent rockwell

  • this is the thing… the camera is 2yrs old

the 60D should be imminent, however I would still take this over a 550D as I like the format.

i was thinking of getting the 550D but saw this.
      now i'm stuck :(

    got mine today :)

  • Anyone know if this deal is only for flexirent? Fine print seems to suggest so.

    • no its not.
you can take it out on flexirent, otherwise cash purchase is fine :)

  • you can forecast this will be a standard amount for this model throughout other retailers within 3 weeks

  • Pretty amazing price for an amazing camera. Bought my 40D for $1700 two years ago and this is better. The improvements are slowing down so the 60D, if it ever comes out, will not be that much better for double the price. Thanks to jlien.

  • anyone bought this?
went there today and price went up $1599..
    insane
