Whats the failure rates on these drives.
Last time I bought 2x 3TB drives i filled them up and then they both failed at the same time still got them here and they dont work.

    • ST3000DM001
      http://www.extremetech.com/extreme/222267-seagate-faces-laws…

& same here with 2 x 4tb Seagates before I filled them up..

      • 4 of the 8 ST4000DM001 drives I had died. I've since used hdparm to change the apm at every boot to not sleep or park. None have died since. Bad firmware configuration to save power. They were designed for infrequent use.

Was same with wd Green drives ….firmware designed for desktops not NAS use or torrent storage due to frequent head parking …..used to be able to reflash the wd Green ….they disabled the feature so people would buyred Nas drives instead

      • I guess the class action suit didn't go ahead?
Was so pissed off to lose 6TB of data in a split second and the drives were barely a few months old.

    This is $10 cheaper:

BUT weighs more and is a bigger unit. Has the addition of a USB hub though

    • You've listed an 8TB archive drive which has disadvantages. I don't believe the drive posted here is an archive drive.

they BOTH use an Archive drive ;)

        • I looked on amazon and couldn't find any evidence of that.

      • What is the advantage of an archive drive?

        • Advantage: cheap.
Disadvantage: slow. After about 100GB of writes, the drive drops from 180MB/sec to 25mb/sec.

        • With an archive drive, it depends how you use it, Ive just copied about 5tb to mine and saw no slowdown at all. Slowdowns can occur once you start deleting things and theres no free contiguous space left to copy new things, it then needs to re-arrange data (put simply).

        • @NotCheap:

If your not writing at full speed, the write cache would have moved it to a different section of the drive already. Most users experience the slow down at 100GB. The write cache is about 20GB. Im unsure about about the V2 drive.

  • can the drive be removed easily?

    and it's 1x8tb inside?

  • Does anyone know whether inside is an archive drive?

I wanna use it as an internal drive

    • Yes it's an Archive drive.. check the amazon comments
