Separation Certificate from Former Job Required to Rollover Super

I recently tried to rollover my super from a previous job (Nightfill casual) to my current job but they have requested for a Separation Certificate or a termination date in writing from former employer. My previous super was REST and my current super is BT.

Given I had left the job approximately 9-10 months ago as they no longer gave me any more shifts, how do I go about getting a separation certificate/termination date. I have around 2.5k in my older super which I'd like to transfer over so fees don't kill it.

Fairly sure you don't need a separation certificate to rollover your super?

  • Why would a super fund require a separation letter to rollover funds? Isn't it as simple as filling in a form with your old fund's details and passing this on to your new fund?

  • I've heard of separation certificate being needed for Centrelink but not for super, It doesn't sound quite right, Is BT asking for it?

As above. I'd call back asking exactly why they want to see it.

Once the super is in your account, the job you earned it from should have little relevance.

As a side note, I've transferred super before - just filled out a form.

  • Thanks for your replies.

REST super has requested for the seperation certifcate in order to transfer the super. I filled in a form from BT to rollover the funds from REST and have received a letter in the mail from REST to supply a seperation certificate.

I will try and get a copy of the letter later this afternoon. But it's along the line of we require a Seperation Certificate or termination date from previous employer in order to transfer.

I consolidated my super from Hostplus,BT and Australian Super without it. I don't think they can withhold rolling over.

This almost seems like a stalling tactic to me. If they want a termination date simply give them the date of your last shift. But again, this seems irrelevant and shady.

  • Given that you're entitled to choose whatever super fund you like, I can see no reason that a super fund requires a separation cert?

  • Person on the phone might have given out wrong info. If you use free super seeker on the ATO website, it does the rollover for you. As easy as a few clicks, once you are registered.

  • Image of the letter. This was for a request I sent about 3 weeks back but did not reply.

Just rang REST super and they have advised that they have a bargaining agreement with Coles so in order for them to transfer the super, they'll need a termination date on the super account or a seperation certificate. Guess I'll need to call Coles anyways.

That sounds like self-dealing and dodgey. I would follow this issue up without a separation note just on principle. Employees can nominate the Super provider of their choice and rollover is a fundamental right. If they refuse, go to the Super complaints Tribunal. I'd love to see their T&Cs stating these (illegal) exit hurdles. As far as I'm concerned, you only have to prove identity/TFN.

  • What is the best way to get in contact with Coles. Should I go through head office number or just contact my store.

    • Maybe store first, there might be a specific person in your region they will direct you to. If you call HO you may go round in loops.

Why not just tell them you haven't terminated your employment you are electing to change where you have your superannuation. Any agreement they have with Coles is irrelevant, you have the right to have your super with whomever you choose. Why not give authority to your new super fund to rollover the funds for you.
