Have been in the market for some budget prime lenses for some time now and was close to pulling the trigger on these a few weeks ago where the 'Instant Savings' where USD$350 now however for the Back Friday Promotion that has been increased to USD$647. The reviews on these is nothing but positive for the price and at this price I don't think we will do better for some time.

Total cost delivered with B&H processing the customs, gst and delivery is around AUD$2728

Clearly not for everyone but there will be some that jump on it :)

well I know his budget is definitely higher than mine.

  • I have the Rokinon 14mm F/2.8 and I have no idea how to use it. Manual is super annoying - seems to have no IS and camera can't really 'talk' to it. Never again

    • Canon mount? Selling it?

    • The 14mm 2.8 is an amazing lens.
Yes it is fully manual lens but it teaches you to use the camera more than just setting it to auto.
I recommend looking up how to use manual lenses, it really is a rewarding art that isnt that hard to get used to.

      • i have a slight shake, so all my handheld shots with it are blurry. i have no idea what the lens is focussing on, because the screen doesnt tell me. i dont even know what the colours will be like, because my screen shows that the photo is too dark, but the actual photo is too bright. im sure its just a reflection of my lack of skill, but honestly, id rather pay double for an oly lens that my camera can talk to and has IS.

        • Thats fair enough.
Im a Canon man so cant recommend a lens but it seems Olympus do both a f/2.8 and f/1.8 17mm lens which sound like they would fit your bill.

If you did want to have a play around with the Rokinon before you get rid of it you will need to play around with the aperture. ring and the focus ring.
The aperture ring is the small one towards the body, in a nutshell this dictates how much light it will let in.
The larger ring is the focus ring (will dictated what is in focus)
As this is a manual lens you will need to play with both every time you take a photo so its far from a click and shoot lens

        • @thorpef1: yea i had a go. its just frustrating that the preview screen cant accurately reflect the photo. and perhaps i need to change a setting for IS to work. my prime lens just makes it too easy to take photos

    • Which Olympus camera? Digital or film? An EM1,5 or 10? The latter all have IS built into the body and screen preview.
The Rokinons are certainly not for the P&S Auto happy snapper.

      • em 10. i dont know why the IS doesnt seem to work with my samyang. ive never had an issue with any oly lenses

        • At 14mm you would very seldom need IS. Please make sure you specify focal length somewhere in camnera settings, as it's necessary for in camera IS. If focal length is specified incorrectly, the result may be much worse when IS is disabled.

        • @pdima: I see. I'll have another play around with the settings. thanks mate
