Stackable 40% and 20% Discount for FamilyTreeDNA Testing. Basic DNA + Y-DNA Test for $150USD + Postage

Stackable discount codes are my favourite! :)

FamilyTreeDNA are having a BlackFriday sale, reducing their standard DNA test from $99USD to $59USD (40% discount).
If you add a Y-DNA for males only (RRP=$169USD, BF=$139USD), you will get an additional 20% discount on the entire order by using one of the coupons in this spreadsheet.
The 20% code is provided in the google spreadsheet. Please strikethrough any code you use. And if you sign up, you'll be emailed a new code to share. Please put that into the spreadsheet for the next person.

FamilyTreeDNA are one of the few that offer Y-DNA testing. This is for males only, and will test the paternal line only (as the Y chromosome is the only one that isn't a mixture of mum and dads genes).

Of course, the standard DNA test 'FamilyFinder' alone for $59USD is still good value for people just curious about all of this.

This won't be for everyone, and don't expect any DNA tests to offer full answers for every question you have. They provide a small insight into your history and should be researched to see if they will contain the information you are seeking. Do your own research before spending your money.

Fair warning, the spreadsheet is a bit of a mess. Just scroll down till you can see an unused 20% off code for 'yDNA 37/67/111' (columns A,B,C)

Not sure which is better, but some of the alternatives are also having sales:

    AUD$99 plus shipping - https://www.ancestry.com.au/dna/
    USD$149.95 plus shipping - https://shop.nationalgeographic.com/product/genographic-2.0-…
    USD$149 plus shipping - https://store.23andme.com/en-int/cart/

There is a comparison here: http://isogg.org/wiki/Autosomal_DNA_testing_comparison_chart
Although I'll generally take these sorts of comparisons with a grain of salt eg the 'primary purpose' for FTDNA is stated as autosomal only but I know they do Y-DNA and mtDNA as well. I guess it's how you define 'primary purpose'…..

Also note that tests are generally paternal only unless you do the mtDNA. Full disclosure - I had mine tested 4 years ago via ftdna and they seemed to be pretty good. The only comment I'd have is that 23andme and ancestry.com both use saliva rather than mouth swabs, and saliva is apparently more effective at getting a decent sample (http://blog.dnagenotek.com/blogdnagenotekcom/bid/87392/How-c…). I'm thinking about taking advantage of the discount at Ancestry (ends today) although I don't think they are quite as comprehensive as ftdna, plus it's kind of locked into their site (they used to allow you to import data but that now seems to have gone) so that's annoying, but it would be a nice way of comparing my older results….

  • I don't think they can tell you what diseases you may have any more after 23andme were investigated by the FDA, which is the only reason I'm interested, no deal

    • Absolutely - you could never use these sorts of tests to see if you have a disease. At best a DNA test might tell you if you are more or less likely to suffer from a specific disease now or in the future but that's just it. It can only say if you have a higher risk of getting something (or passing on a disease to your children) compared to the average person. That's one reason why a lot of medical professionals don't like the idea of these tests being used for individual medical research without proper supervision as the number of 'false positives' could lead to a lot of unnecessary procedures.

23andme now have FDA approval (http://gizmodo.com/23andme-is-back-in-the-genetic-testing-bu…) for certain tests with some restrictions. Personally, if you have no family history of specific medical issues then the main reason for these tests to exist is to help you with family history research. If you do have concerns/have a family history of something then go to a medical professional and have it done properly.

  • Saves me going on Maury Povich. Thanks!!

  • Today I got an email from Family Tree DNA with a discount code:

    $10 off Y37, Y67, or Y111
    R19U7U2HT5GP
    VAILD UNTIL 12/11/2016

So I added it to the spreadsheet you gave, at the bottom of the "yDNA 37/67/111" column
Apparently not as good as the 20% discount code I had used.
    Thanks BluBoy
