      • Are you sure it was 6:17? I didn't see it until 6:24

        • Yes, very sure. It may have even been 6:16 it became viewable because I mucked up and could only get my message through at 6:17

    • Bad luck. They responded back already?

      • +1

Yep, got the message at 6:30pm

        Hi (firstName),
Someone found todays gift before you - check back on Gumtree before 8pm AEDT 12/12/16 for the other daily gifts. We’ll also add you to the second chance draw for your chance to win a Harley Davidson!
        Merry Christmas!
        Team Gumtree

        • At least you got a message in. Link is back up, at 11000 views. Lol!

  • I almost certain something fishy is going on here with the listings. I had the day off work and was refreshing every 30 seconds from 3pm onward until the listing was found, I was searching for "tribute fender guitar" and at no stage did the listing ever show, I found this thread and clicked the posted link and there it suddenly is. I don't know if it's a caching issue, a bug on their end or people manipulating the system somehow but I am 100% certain that listing didn't show until it was actually marked as found.

    • Whilst I agree with you that the search listings can be delayed in showing products, I will respectfully disagree with your implications that Gumtree are doing something "fishy". Consider the your search terms vs. the actual listing and you can see how you missed it. Have a play around with some different search terms based on the existing prizes found, e.g. Try "giftmas" or "today's gift" and you'll see a some previous prizes won. Don't assume there's a bug/glitch/hack, ect. as other people in this thread seem to have found the inactive listings which puts you on the back foot. Hope this was helpful and not condescending!

      • But if you search "tribute fender guitar" now it suddenly shows… ? even stranger it's listed half way down the page below listings that are over a day old.

        • How are you filtering results, most recent?
Edit: did your search terms with most recent (on mobile) and it was the first ad…

        • You might have been unlucky. We don't know how long the page was "live ". Some of us saw the listing in our search but the ad was unavailable when we clicked on it and tried to message.

        • @thequickandthedead: Weird, I'm on a desktop PC and also asked a friend to try that search term, sorting by most recent and they also see the ad halfway down the page.

        • @randolpg: Are you restricting your location?

        • @edd91: Nope, searching all of Australia. I have just disabled my safescript chrome plugin and now I can see the "found ad" in the "top ads" section at the top, is that what everyone else is referring to? I've been looking for it in the listings

        • @randolpg: It is in top ads now but when its live you'd find it in the 'most recent' section. It's currently the 6th item in the most recent section for your search.

        • @edd91: hmm, never showed up for me until it was "found" oh well.

    • +1

Nothing fishy, a lot of people have found the original ads that are to be edited by Gumtree and if you refresh the page constantly it shows up quicker than it does in the search results. It's like on eBay, listings often don't appear in the search immediately but if you have the item number you can find the ad, even if it doesn't show in the general search.

Out of the remaining 5 prizes, I believe only the ring and the outdoor setting are "findable" at present which leads me to believe the car, Playstation and surfboard may well be new ads. Of course Gumtree might change things up, as I said in an earlier post, the Mimco Bag was findable too but they elected not to use the old ad and started a new one.

It's my belief that unless you have found the ads for the ring and outdoor setting already, it will be impossible for you to win, no matter how fast you refresh. Not trying to dampen enthusiasm but a lot of people already have the ads bookmarked and they will be long gone before they show up in the search results, unless Gumtree does something similar to the handbag.

Edit - Actually I can't find the Tiffany ring, but another poster on here has.

      • So any hints on how to find them?

        • +5

I'm torn between telling everyone how to find the listings (because I'm a super awesome great guy) and selfishly keeping it to myself (because I'm a super awesome great guy who could really use a new outdoor setting!). I'll split the difference and say that if you are searching on Gumtree you are looking in the wrong place….

        • @madgolfer: Did you have success finding today's one? I couldn't either

        • @edd91:

Unfortunately no, searched for about an hour this morning but came up emtpy.

        • @madgolfer:

Perhaps you could inform people the location in Aus of the ring/ category it is in?

        • +1

          @thequickandthedead:

If I find it I will.

        • @madgolfer:

Ah sorry, thought you had found it

      • +3

Actually I can't find the Tiffany ring, but another poster on here has.

Not sure they'll use the listing I have, or create a new one

  • So, any guesses as to when they will release the next prize? I'm going for 6pm!

    • I have a feeling it might go off earlier today, I'm thinking yesterday might have been their token late listing. I'll go with 2:14pm :P

      • +1

        No bingo for you :D

        • +1

I'm in QLD, we are an hour behind the rest of the world lol.

    • I was hoping 12:01 to throw a curve ball to those thinking they'll start the search late. Alas, that has not been the case. I'm going with 5:15 today.

  • Before 3pm aest I'm hoping for…

  • +6

I'm betting it will be 3 minutes after my baby decides it's nap time, like yesterday's did.

    • Haha then let us know when your baby's started napping.

      • No way! This is my advantage!!

    • Perhaps for these gumtree days, it's time to get your baby onto coffee :P

      • Going off the assumption that your baby made you miss out yesterday.

        • I wasn't going for the guitar so I didn't mind, but I still like the hunt :) I delayed putting her down for about an hour (bad mum) then finally gave up, then 3 minutes later the ad was up.

        • @compacc: @compacc:

A bad mum is a bit harsh lol. Maybe bub knows that the ring is worth more today. Happy hunting :)

  • +3

The romantic in me hopes some guy down on his luck wins this and is able to give his partner the diamond ring they always dreamed of.
The realist knows it's going straight back on gumtree lol

    • +1

Just imagine the pain if you gave it to the Mrs and she lost it… uninsured

      • +2

I think I might suddenly lose the Mrs if that happened

  • -1

Hi all i couldnt commwnt yestersay i got a message in at 6.16 and didnt win.

    • Tmax did you find the result in the search listing or know the item ID?

    • +1

I wonder if they disqualified all users who had the listing and commented at 6:16 - 6:17. They made some Facebook comments discussing this.

      • where are the comments?

        • +1

Some comments about disqualifying non-genuine users, probably implying those who had the listings. I commented on the post at 6:17 refreshing every 2 seconds so 6:16 is an easy win. They re-uploaded the pic without the 'found' pic again a few minutes after? Adds up nicely I guess unless someone can confirm they won along with their time. This is regarding the guitar prize btw.

        • @SkyVoltz: interesting..thx

        • @SkyVoltz: That seems unfair . The t and c's state "The Listing may not appear as a “new listing” but could be an “existing listing” (which up to that point would have been a blank listing), as determined by the Promoter in its discretion" which imply you can find it before the listing goes "live".

        • @SkyVoltz: yeah i think we should all wait a minute or 2 to reply so we dont look like bots

        • @SkyVoltz: I wonder if I am considered a bot as I use 4 computers & have just changed from my adsl to 4g for some extra speed ;)

        • @ldstr: haha.. nice try ;)

        • @SkyVoltz: Did you have the ItemID in advance? Or find it through searching

        • +1

          @adski:
Ah yes, the good old use my phone for internet instead of my hardline connection for better speeds, because Straya.

        • @MrtheMoonbear: Dam, back to adsl for me as I ran out of mobile data. don't know why as there should of been 4gig but will sus it out later!

edit: it killed all my searches too so I had to set them up again..grr..

  • as it hasn't gone off yet I might even have a go of this one ;)

  • Still no sign of it?

  • Guys im a new user so i can comment much.. just search elsewhere other than gumtree ..

    • I wish people would stop down voting other peoples comments for no reason.. that's not cool :(

edit: missed it because I was annoyed of all the negativity here!

      • +1

Yeah i was a little shocked :( i was just trying to be helpful after all its just a game

  • +1

    annnnd gone

  • +1

dammit i got up for 1 minute and it pops lol

    • went to get dinner, and its gone

    • It went really really quick :/ I was refreshing and it showed that it had been up for 2 hours…hoping it was just a glitch!!!

      • It was probably when they created the new ad rather than edit the "original" ad.

        • Oh okay so they just updated an ad that was already posted?

    • Sorry, this ad is not available.

  • Well good luck to anyone lucky enough to find it in time!

  • gah .. i was refreshing every second.. using comp and app (so ever 1/2 second) it came up and straight away went to "found"

  • +1

If anyone is interested, this was the "original" ad.

    • Oops I was refreshing another ad. Lol.

    • ad has gone, what did it say/what was it for? wonder if it was obvious that it was the ad…

    • they have just marked the orig ad as sold..lol!

  • You sure it has been found? The Guntree giftmas blog usually updates the images to "found" but it hasn't been updated yet?

  • Still not back up for second chance draw?

    • Back up for me, I used adski's link above.

  • +1

Everybody should share their ways of finding the items to make the competion fair for everybody.

    • +5

But shouldn't those who have put in a lot of time and hard work be rewarded with some kind of advantage?

      • +6

I think it's Jbay's way of saying "I have no advantage but I want one"

  • +3

I can't be stuffed anymore - not running a script/bots, even an auto-refresh extension, puts me behind the 8-ball. No doubt that there are people using scripts, I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to create either, given the requirements. Not spending a whole afternoon staring at a screen only to be beat because of the internet connection or other methods.

Good luck to the rest of you!

    • Yea I might check back in every now and again, but these 6 hour stakeouts are getting a bit much.

    • It amuses me all the people claiming "scripts/bots" whatever that ambiguous term means. If you're sure it wouldn't be hard to create, why don't you create them? It's a bit of a CSI "zoom zoom zoom" moment, people seem to be overestimating what can easily be done. The winners who have posted on ozbargain didn't have any "scripts/bots", they spent some time figuring out the general system of the competition and leveraged that and then spent a lot of time in front of the screen. This is perhaps moreso on the Gumtree FB page, but there seems to be some sense of entitlement amongst a lot of people that they will win. The people on the FB page seem to assume they're the only 10 people entering the competition.

      • +1

You really think an auto-clicker would be hard to make? Page layout is the same for each ad, if you knew the url in advance, wouldn't be difficult to work out that when the page changes, click here, enter this text, click here. There's no captchas required to submit the msg.

And no, I can't use/make one as I work while this comp is on.

Not an entitlement by any means, it's a test of fastest ping/pc/mouse click, that's all this 'comp' is. Right now I can tell you exactly what suburb the outdoor set is located in, I could've told you the suburb the ring was in. Easily found out.

        • I still don't know how you find all these things in advance lol
I have been looking most days and never had any luck, I'm sure it's something really obvious I am not thinking about but still, I call shenanigans :P

        • @MrtheMoonbear:

Google cache is a lovely thing ;)

        • @Spackbace:

If you take a look at gumtree's robot.txt file you can also see that they don't stop google from caching their ad's, hence why you are able to look at google cache.

      • +1

Scripts and bots in this context, is a piece of software or code that automates the processes you would otherwise have had to do manually. Some as simple as just refreshing for you, from someone smart enough it could also extend to one that automatically detects the listing change, opens up the listing and sends a message. This can skip a lot of loading and/or searching time. Most people could not easily do it, true. But among all the people participating, there is 100% going to be people with the capacity, if not the desire, to program these bots.
Much like performance enhancing drugs in sport, it doesn't guarantee you will win, but it does give you an advantage.

    • Totally agree, I think I was lucky getting in on day one before anyone had the chance to do any of that. Although, in hindsight people probably did do it on day one. When I spoke to the gumtree lady I said to her I was surprised I won because it said something like 400 views when I sent my message and I knew I was pretty quick at getting in because of how often I was refreshing. She said she was surprised that was the case as I messaged within 4 seconds or so. I am now wondering whether there were people on day one that got in before me but were disqualified? It took 45 minutes I think before I was told I won,
The other day shortly after the ad went live it had a crazy amount of hits, i think 10,000 or so. How would that be possible without scripts of some sort?
Hubby managed to get a message in on one of the days before it changed to 'found' b never received a reply (as far as I know) to say that he hadn't won. It was maybe day four or five??

  • +1

Oh no! I'm still relying on ozbargain to tell me me whether it's been found or not.

    • Might have to wait until 6.30pm today - the competitions seem to be going longer and longer!

      • One of the days for sure I reckon they are going to put it up at 12:01
