Have You Ever Been Scammed?

Random thought.

Have you ever been scammed from an online purchase?
I've purchased hundreds of second hand items online from eBay but can't think of one time I was scammed and 8 out of 10 purchases are usually over $100.

In year 6 of High School I traded a worthless Yugioh golden card for a strong rare one to a year 4. I found out 2 months later that his card was a fake.

When I first went out on a dinner date with my wife, she ordered only a very small meal, I thought wow I won't have to spend a lot feeding her. Now after 7 years of marriage she looks like she can gobble down an elephant. Can I call that a scam?

    • +3

If she can gobble down an elephant, I would love to see a photo of that beast

    • lol. Well, it's not a scam as such unless she was intending to make it a long play from the get-go.

    • lmfao

  • Yes. A few years ago there was a shop in Melbourne where the people at the counter were spruiking amazing brand-name items for really cheap and the prices were gradually increasing. It started at buying an item for $2 worth $10, then $5 worth $20… at which stage we thoguht they were crazy as the value was definitely there! However, then things took a wrong turn and they started offering 'mystery boxes' for $50 which we purchased and were told to go home and open it in our living room as we would be so delighted! Turns out it was a crappy $5 doll… However, I count myself lucky we didn't buy the $200 or $400 mystery boxes… oh boy! And a similar store is there today… I have a hankering to go there and record the shenanigans and upload so you guys can see…

Almost got ripped off, thanks paypal!

Lol wow, interesting read. I was surprised that he even managed to keep contact with you for so long.

      • +2

Yeah I thought he would just stop talking too, I think he had alot of money tied up in that paypal account which is why he panicked.

Since I got the refund I haven't had any msg's from him or texts.

I love how he tried to guilt trip me into closing the case lol

        • You can tell how desperate he was lol, I would've just gotten mad at being stuffed around for a month. I was looking on the new facebook marketplace and as soon as I saw this one guys ads I knew he was trying to scam people but I messaged him anyways because I was bored acting like I was going to buy his stuff. Asked for his bank details as I was going to deposit money but his bank account details + license were completely different to his facebook lol. His account got deleted by facebook, hopefully he didn't actually scam anyone.

          Wow what a scum!!

I don't think I could've kept my cool as long as you did. Hope he gets a massive dose of karma, annoyed me just reading that!!

        • @montorola: See I had another laptop in the mean time so I really didn't mind, I just kinda accepted that it wasn't going to come about 2 weeks in and just thought it might after another 2 weeks perhaps.

Surprise surprise it didn't. I really wanted to msg him back "Not my problem" in the end when he was trying to guilt trip me about his girlfriend.

        • @Zondor:

How long did it take you to figure out he was trying to scam you?

        • @Luckyuser: When he started talking about all the delays essentially. It' not THAT hard to post something these days, and if your intending to sell an item you'd only sell it if you have time to actually post it.

I reported whatever details of her I had to the police and 3 months later I get my money back after the cops ended up chasing after her as she was known for scamming many stupid people like .. atleast I got my money back !!

I had obtained her number from eBay (you can get some information when your in a transaction if they've put up their correct information ) and I would call her up on a private number at like 1am to annoy her lol coz she blocked my number..

I got a call from a guy claiming to be a Microsoft representative once, apparently he was calling customers to help them fix an error message that a lot of people were getting at the time. Anyway after giving him a 'remote access' code or whatever he seized control of the computer and started going through the settings etc. while talking with me on the phone. It was all very strange at the time as I didn't know much about computers but at least I had the sense not to give him my credit card details. (Btw. Yes I changed all my passwords and stuff after the call).

  • I've been scammed twice.

First time was via AliExpress, item was never sent, never delivered, but they took my money. Every time I contacted them they assured me they had sent it without tracking and to please wait 20 business days as items from China take time. After 40 or so business days was told I couldn't do a chargeback via PayPal as the time had lapsed.

The second time was from a Ralph Lauren reseller - asked for a size XL for my partner, paying correct price for the real item. Ended up receiving a size S counterfeit item. The website didn't want to fix the issue, either via refund or exchange. Learned my lesson from the first and immediately contact my bank. Did a chargeback via credit card company, got the money back.

  • Been scamed on RUnsecape, wow, ebay and gumtree. Nothing of stupid amounts and ebay and gumtree I got my money/items back anyway.

  • Only once and never again. I was young, naive and stupid getting sucked in by a deal too good to be true. A couple of latest model nokias for $600 the pair brand new in box. Please send through Western Union and located in Romania. Of course they never arrived…funny thing is that the very moment i handed over the cash at the post office and walked out of the shop..i knew straight away..valuable and expensive lesson.

  • One time someone said "doubling money" at the GE and I traded him 1mil but he logged out with it :/

Edit: I'm two pages late to the joke, lol

But on topic, not outside of games, no. I've received the odd dodgy item, though usually I order these knowing there's a 90% chance they're dodgy and planning on disputing as soon as I receive the item.

I was scammed a few times, usually items not as described, crappy USBs and things like that. Once (approx 5+ years ago now) I bought a small bottle of SK-II toner on ebay, to take with me on a trip— I had a big 215ml bottle that was running out and I wanted a smaller one for convenience for travel. I was worried about fakes, but seller had a ton of good feedback for the product in question. I receive it, and it smells like strong rosewater fragrance. Now, I was really familiar with the product— like I said, I owned a big bottle of it and I had some left in it. I'd also been using it for a while. it has no fragrance. It smells kinda yeasty almost because its fermented; so it smelling at all like fragrance was a bad sign. So I compared it to my big bottle and yeah, the two are totally different. They have a different, smell, texture and slight color variations. Seller was selling total fakes—wasn't sure if the bottle itself was fake, my impression was they were refilling legit bottles with cheap toners. So I contact the seller, and they deny it. They basically tell me that I can't prove it, and they won't refund me— if I'm really unhappy, they'll give me $2 off my $40 dollar purchase. So I decide to go to SK-II counter and I show the product to the lady working for them; she confirms it's not legit. Armed with that, I don't even reply to the dude, and neg the guy. I offer comparison photos to paypal, and it takes them about 5 days to rule in my favor and refund me. I can't remember if I negged him first and then filed, or if I filed and then negged him. But I remember suddenly the dude blew up my inbox, being all overy kind and begging me to amend the feedback. It was about six emails. He even offered to send me extra money! I refused, because, ultimately he was selling fake product and I figured people should know.

Another time, I accidentally scammed someone (but it got resolved). I bought this nerdy collectible (kinda like POPvinyl but not that) from this guy in Hong Kong. I'd actually bought stuff from this guy before with no problems. So I open my package and its says "Rement Country Fair" on it or something and it has pics of miniatures on it. I'm like, 'oh, man he sent me the wrong thing by mistake!' so I contact the dude, tell him he sent me this weird Rement set, he's super gracious and is all like, "I'm so sorry, I'll send you the right item straight away, as a gesture of goodwill, just keep Rement stuff, don't worry about sending it back" I'm placated thinking the mistake was a one-off, and I kinda put the Rement box aside without even opening it. Two weeks pass, and I receive my second package. I open it, and its not my item. It's like a Star Wars figure box. I'm like, 'Omg, really?' thinking the guy just must be losing it and getting all his orders confused. Then I notice the figure box isn't actually sealed. This is my Eureka moment— I open the box and yep— my figure was inside the box— the Star Was box was just a box he'd used to protect the item. Suddenly I have a feeling of dread. I go over to the Rement box from the first delivery, open it and sure enough, there's a same figure inside, packed the same way. I'd never actually opened the Rement box to check, I'd just assumed it was what I'd been sent. Suddenly I had two of the exact same item. I felt so bad that I actually paid him back for shipping the item, got his address and mailed him the second figure back ASAP. It cost me like $30 bucks to ship back (freaking Australian shipping) but I couldn't in good conscience keep it.

In my defense, the boxes he was using to protect the stuff were pristine, it totally looked like I'd been sent the wrong thing. I suggested he turn them inside out or write on them or something for next time, I couldn't be the only confused person, I hope, lol.

    • Good on you for having the conscience to do the right thing. It's a big thing to ask these days lol

    • Karma is a bitch… you did the right thing.

Good seller, good buyer.. that's how it should be.
You don't want to put good sellers out of business.

Can you link me his shop?
I'll check out the items he's selling and see if he has anything I want.

      Cheers.

  • yes twice in two years,

1- sold apple watch on gumtree, I had few and someone offered to buy the last one. I was idiot and expected bank transaction. he sent me copy of the transaction, I had his mobile number, car number plate and copy of his passport. policy didn't do anything,i couldnt do much with VCAT as I didnt have his address…..
    I never got my money!!

2- second year i thought i'll be smarter and not money no honey. I was NOT smarter!!! I sold two iphones, i accepted paypal payment, the $$ cleared in my account and I handed over the phones. few days later, they filed a case with paypal (and then the credit card company) claiming that they sent the money but they never received the phones. after long battle with paypal they refunded me the money. But the scammer ran away with the money ($2900) as he won the case with the CC company. so at the end PP coughed the money

  • I was scammed by the Prince of Nigeria. Can't trust royal families these days.

  • eBay's the only place that comes to mind where I've been 'scammed' in an online purchase, insofar as the items I received were counterfeit (software, DVDs, phone batteries). But I don't come out of it feeling particularly aggreived, as it's easy to get your money back - these sellers know what they're doing and tend to refund without the need to open a case.

However, it works both ways, and it's hard to know whether I've been scammed as a seller. For example, someone claimed several weeks ago they didn't receive a Blu-ray I sent. Who knows whether they did or not? Nothing can do except refund.

And right now, I'm actually replying to someone who claims a remote control I sent them isn't working (tested before it was sent). Maybe they're honest, or maybe they're claiming a freebie at my expense. Just no way to know. In the old days, I'd ask them to safely destroy the item, send a pic, and I'd provide a full refund, but nowadays that'll probably just earn you a neg on top of the refund you'll be forced to provide anyway.

  • I bought concert tickets off Gumtree (face value); as they were sold out. Went to the gig and tickets got rejected as they had been cancelled by the original buyer. Queue heart drop. Thought I was shit out of luck, but there were 'seated' tickets available on the day so just bit the bullet and bought them. Thoroughly enjoyed the gig.

Next day I chased the seller (not aggressively, only via text too) and said it's a pretty sad thing to do etc etc. He came back to me really apologetic and offered to repay me - which he did! Turns out he had bought the tickets second hand too (gumtree). Unsure whether he ever got coin back from the original scammer though.

  • About a year ago I bought a Surface Pro 2 off eBay US. Was super cheap, and seller just sent me a fake tracking number. He must have sold 750 at the price that he had, and after opening a dispute I got my money back. He got banned too haha

  • I was never Scammed, but they did try it on when I was selling my boat online.

He said he would buy it outright without even seeing

But I would have to pay some Fee (lol as if) to transfer the money and he would then pay it back. When I called him out on it, his emails English fell to bits and he knew he was caught out.

  • Once on ebay, had a set of Brembo rotors literally shipped from the US. Was always a bit suss about it… never rocked up and also because of the shipping delay the 90 day recourse of action had expired so PayPal wouldn't allow a chargeback. Lucky it was on credit card so issued a dispute with my bank who then refunded the money… funnily enough I then got a nasty email from PayPal telling me to submit any disputes through them first!! haha

  • Steve Embrey. [email protected]
Was too trusting years ago when ebay allowed direct transfer and I thought I'd save him the extra paypal fees. Sent bank payment and never got my Playstation game as he continued saying he was still overseas and to wait till he gets back. Sent him an email years later to see if he was still there and he brushed it off as history. What an a$$h0le. I hope karma bites hard.

  • I had a mate get scammed on ebay buying a Group A VN Commodore. I still remember when he came to us mates and said he'd scored a Group A for like 7k but it had to get sent from interstate and the owner was in America and it was his dad selling it (or something similar). I immediately said "dude, that's a scam", and he didn't believe me and got really angry with me. (I had seen similar scams already and Group A's were around 20k back then).

He never got his car and never told anyone if he got his cash back (I assume he didn't).

  • I wonder how well eBay will fare when Amazon arrives late next year?
