"The ALDI road bike sits, quite clearly, in the ‘lycra’ category. As a sporting road bike, cycling shorts (knicks) and a cycling jersey will be the most comfortable cycling attire to wear."

      :)

  • +3

all i can say is wow, what an absolute bargain
i bought mine for $300 and at that price i thought it was a steal

  • +1

    Which Liverpool store OP?

    • +2

      Hoxton park rd

      • Thank you very much :)

  • -6

I'd buy one in a second if we had that in Victoria. And I bloody hate road cyclists.

  • +2

Anyone know if any of the QLD stores have the road bike in stock please?

    • yes can someone please check since they do not allow you to call and i will upvote your comment

      • +1

I'm going to call their head office on the 13 ALDI number tomorrow morning. Fingers-crossed hey how some stock around Brisbane, QLD!

        • They don't track stock below a certain level, so good luck!

        • Did you call them?

        • @warsch: Yes, like rynag said, the customer service rep on phone said they're not able to check as they don't track stock levels for this item :(

    • I have seen some at Kedron store couple of days ago for 299$ but not sure whether they were reduced to 135$ i will find out today evening

      • Sounds good. Please let me know how you go!

        • @PLA74

See below comments @gork beat me to it ..

They have 3 bikes 199$ each

    • +1

The Chermside store has 3 road bikes in stock (2xL, 1xM). They are marked at $199 and scan as $199. I still bought one anyway because even at that price its such a great deal.

      • westfield chermside or gympie road big store?

        • +1

just got one at Chermside Gympie Road store still $199 in qld.
Still a good buy in my opinion. 1 Large 1 Med Blue left.

  • +15

Who reported this for insufficient stock? This is as much stock as most stores would've had upon the catalogue special starting. Guessing you're not a local, sucks for you :p

  • -1

What size are they? Can't make it out from the pic

  • Difference between large and med?

    • +20

      The size

    • +7

53cm –Medium Suitable for riders 170-180cm
56cm –Large: Suitable for riders 180-190cm

      • Are there actually 2 sizes on offer here?

      • +1

Any different on the wheels? Or just the frame?

        • +1

          only frame changes sizes

        • Frame only

    • I bought a Medium one (170-180cm).But I am 168cm. Technically I should be riding small (or maybe xs). But I don't feel any discomfort.

  • Couple of months on this

    • +14

You must have a sore arse.

  • At this price just buy one of each size.

  • Is there any left since this was posted 3hrs ago. I don't want to turn up at 8:30 in the morning with nothing there lol.

    • +9

That sir, is part of the Aldi shopping experience :)

    • buy the waves

  • Im glad im in Melbourne

  • Was tempted at the original price point. This is a great deal.

  • What is the normal price of this bike? I don't need one but I live 2 mins from the store, might have a look at it in the morning if this is a good deal!

    • According to the review that was posted above, they retail at $399, which they say is a steal at that price.

  • Is this suited to the road only? Can it be used on footpaths (Rocky and uneven)?

    • +1

I have gone over road surfaces and slightly rocky pathways. I didn't feel comfortable over the rocks and would not recommend over anything other than relatively even surfaces. Your butt will thank you too.

    • +1

It's definitely suited to roads only, and smooth ones at that. If you want to ride on footpaths or uneven/broken surfaces, you want a MTB or hybrid bike.

    • +4

When you mean footpaths, you mean sidewalks (outside properties and beside the road), or recreational walking tracks (e.g. beside a river)?

For the former, there is often a practical and safety considerations regarding cycling on pedestrian throroughfares. There may even be legal restrictions for adults cycling on the footpath.

A road bike would be very restrictive on a sidewalk, it is simply not safe to cycle much faster than 10 km/hr (or even 5 km/hr…) due to the presence of pedestrians and reversing cars. Just on Tuesday I saw two idiots cycling approx 10 km/hr on the congested (but quiet) sidewalk of a Melrose St shopping strip in North Melbourne, nearly knocking over an elderly lady who was coming out of a shop with her shopping trolley. (incidentally, Melrose St is a very quiet road at that time of day, so these fearless adult cyclists had no excuse to not be on the road).

Other than having to cycle at a slower speed due to safety concerns, a road bicycle is designed to have you leaning forwards, which is good when you are cycling 20+ km/hr. Not so great if you need excellent visibility of your surrounding environment. For that reason, flat-bar handles, or in-line brakes which placed on the top of drop-bar handles are handy to let you 'sit-up' and see your surroundings better at lower speeds.

Recreational walking tracks beside the river often do cater for cyclists, and road-cyclists can often be cycling 30+ km/hr on them. However, the path is also catering for pedestrians walking at 5 km/hr, and so in practice:

      1. The paths are sometimes relatively narrow
      2. The paths are sometimes relatively windy
      3. The paths can be bumpy (broken gravel). The faster you ride, the bumpier the path will feel
      4. The paths can be slippery in wet weather.
      5. The paths can have pedestrians, small children and animals

So a road bicycle sometimes cannot be used to full advantage.
Nevertheless, it certainly is possible to ride a road bicycle on recreational paths.
      Even on gravel recreational paths.

To reduce the bumpiness of the ride

      1. ride slowly
      2. ride with less pressure in the wheels e.g. 90 psi instead of 100 psi. It depends on your weight (there are calculation tools on the Internet). And also the wheels themselves. This bike came with 23mm tires. Some forums say this bicycle can have 28mm tires on the front fork, and 32mm on the back. Larger tires allow lower pressures
      3. Wear gloves with some shock-absorption
      4. If you find the saddle uncomfortable consider
4a. a more comfortable saddle (whatever that means)
        4b. padded shorts

Generally speaking 28mm/32mm tires are the minimum comfortable tire width for riding on gravel. (perhaps only slowly on 28mm)
Many old road bicycles were designed for 23mm, so it is good that the Aldi bike can accommodate 28mm.

Picked one up at the liverpool store, thankyou!

When i left they were closing there was still the same stock minus the medium i bought.

    • +6

      And still no + vote….

      • +2

I guess some people just take and never give. 5 comments but joined in 2012. Well, at least he has updated us with stock levels.

  • So many clicks but so little stock.

  • any idea if this will hit QLD at all?

    • +2

It's random. For an unknown reason this store either had some surplus stock out back that they decided to move or it was sent to them from elsewhere. These bikes were selling about 6 months or more ago

  • 6 bikes and 57 likes.
They could have a few dozen out back. Ask

  • +1

Love how there are 10x more up votes than stock.

    • +1

I'm in SA, and gave it a thumbs up too :-)

  • how is this different than the kmart $160 one?

    • Follow the link in the 1st comment.

    • +6

you aren't kidding? this one is technically a rebranded Polygon which costs about $600 (discounted).

      It weighs only 10.5Kg
      Internal Cable routing
      Shimano Claris groupset
      Carbon fork

I doubt that Kmart or any bike on the market for <$500 would get you those at this price.

      • cool…i knew i had a decent ride and there was a good chance it was a polygon frame but didnt know it was an actual rebrand of an existing complete polygon bike. thanks for posting that link ;)

  • Is anyone able to buy me one today and I will pick it up off you and will pay you for your efforts?

    • +2

I am gonna have a look this morning. Unable to msg you. PM me which one you want.

  • Just curious, what componentry is on these?

Edit nevermind, found their PDF sheet

  • All gone lol

    • which store?

      • livepool hoxton park road

  • picked up one of these at Rydalmere about a month ago, there was just the one left in Large which was perfect for me so I got it.

amazing price for this bike considering my shoes+cleats costed more than $139.50.

    edit.
now waiting for the 29er mtb to go on this insane discounted sale!! :P

  • Bargain.

  • +3

just got one at Chermside Gympie Road store still $199 in qld.
Still a good buy in my opinion. 1 Large 1 Med Blue left.

  • +1

    Great find OP!

This is an absolute steal at this price. I bought one for $199 about a month ago and thought it was an absolute bargain. I have already done more than 300Kms on it and loving it. I ride with people who got bikes worth more than 50 times the price of this one. You can't tell it is from ALDI as long as you stay in the bunch :P

  • Thanks OP. Bought the last M @dural Aldi for $150. Still 2 L left if anyone is interested.

  • +1

    Anyone found any in Victoria?

  • If anyone sees them at Lakemba or Canterbury stores please let me know. #toolazytocheckmyself

  • Have been keeping an eye out for the MTB in Vic but no dice.

Saw a couple of road bikes at the fountain gate store but this was a month ago so highly doubt they are still there.

  • +1

when I went there at 8.30 this morning there were only 3~4 bikes left. One man and woman team took all of them. There were about other 5 people missed out.

  • +1

Aldi @ Kelvin Grove QLD have a few in the back (you've got to ask) for $199

  • All out of stock near Liverpool, campbelltown except Miller Aldi who got a couple of Hubrid ones. They are selling those for $229 if anyone's interested.

    • Did you check the one near Bankstown Airport? It's not far from Liverpool from memory

      • I got the last one there a while ago, unlikely unless they got in new stock.

      • No, but the store manager at Miller called all nearby stores for me, none got it. I ended up buying the hybrid one for $200. Not so much of a bargain but felt like buying a bike lol

  • +7

I was there too this morning waiting in line, me and the people in front of me all missed out because the couple took it all. What a dogged act. I would be okay if I missed out if the people in front go one each.

Likely be on gumtree or ebay by now.

    • Mr and Mrs Broden. Shame there's some greedy people out there. I'll mark it expired.

  • Do different Aldi stores keep different stock? For instance did all stores at some stage have these bikes and have just sold out?

  • +1

    Any left in WA?

  • Any in Western Australia?

  • Any in Victoria interested in one of these will make a great Xmas present

  • +1

I'm really tempted to pick one up just to ride around for lols. Like the road bike party video a few years ago. I already have very nice bikes so I should probably pass and save up instead. It is really good value and looking at the specs it's definitely a steal!! :D

  • Anyone know if there are any left in Sydney Metro?

  • +6

great bike for the dollars…some thoughts from my experience:

    • the saddle is garbage offering zero support or stiffness and the the pedals are terrible so allow some budget for new ones…
    • the tyres i cant wait to get rid of but theyll do as a first set…so factor in for some better tyres down the track
    • you really need this setup correctly to get it riding right so if youre unfamiliar with tuning gears, setting up brakes, bike fit etc take it to a bikeshop and theyll make it ready to roll and more importantly a safe bike
    • check for damage & loose components. i had one bike with a bent front chainring returned it and the second had a badly out of true front wheel. the 2nd bike also had a loose headset/fork that needed adjustment as well
    • after sales support is excellent
    • Yep, Saddle is awful tho I still use it. I changed the pedals.

Still didn't get a chance to get it properly fit. Just some help from my cycling friends to get it "ride ready" ;)

Even with most expensive bikes you would have to pay for the saddle and pedals extra I assume. So at least this one came with Pedals :D

    • Really insightful comments, Franco cozzo.

I would also add that the bike gearing and brakes (+ cabling) is already setup on the bike when you pull it out of the box.

    • Good comments but good luck finding a local bike shop (LBS) that will happily adjust your Aldi bike for you. If you have to pay for the Local Bike Shop (LBS) to set it up their time will likely cost more than the bike. I am a road cycling tragic and a regular at my LBS. Dave and the boys there tell me every XMas they get parents coming in with KMart bikes bought cheap for kids presents. These parents have had a go setting the things up and failed miserably. They take it to the bike shop expecting Dave to save the day and setup the bike for them, Dave says, sure no problem $100 please and they have a fit. People expect some help from Dave's shop for free. Dave points out that he also sells bikes and whilst they are a bit more expensive than KMart he backs all of his bikes up with setup, service and support. He doesnt spend his time fixing up the competition's bikes on his own time and money!

      • +1

…my LBS was more than happy to go over the stuff i had done, setup brakes, tune the front & rear mech and make sure gearing was spot on, and trued 2x wheels all for $50 total…he spent about 45 minutes on the bike while i was there browsing their range & chatting to hime & he was more than happy to have me as a customer irrespective of where i had purchased my bike…maybe your LBS just isnt very customer focused? :P

        • My LBS is great for their 'Regulars' and customers, pretty sure they would setup a bike for me for free but probably not for someone in off the street they didnt know. My LBS is pretty busy most of the time though.

  • WA?

  • +3

I managed to pick up the last L at Chermside Aldi. One M left there at 9:30am this morning.

NOTE to those who are about to buy these bikes, you can get more discount. The bike was advertised as $199 reduced. I queried the lower price at other stores interstate with the checkout staff and was told that Aldi Head Office tell the stores to discount the bikes BUT don't direct what discount they should make. Therefore the discount is up to the store to make. I asked if he could discount the bike any further from the $199 and he was able to lower the price to $169.

    • +2

Darn, I should've haggled them. Anyway, 199 is still good.

  • In the unlikely chance that someone has bought a spare bike, please PM me. Thanks!

  • They are still at stores, thanks OP picked the last one up at ALDI Dandenong

  • this is the best saddle you can buy for just $50:

    http://www.pushys.com.au/selle-smp-trk-mens-saddle-white.htm…

  • Been looking for a cheap road bike for work commute (10km Brisbane) .

Got a red medium one in Carindale last night. Scanning at $349 but I told him NSW store had them for $134 and Chermside at $199 (or $169 if you ask nicely). He said stores are not allowed to discount more than 50% original (399) so offered $199. Sounds like rubbish but I wasn't going to argue over $30.

I think it was the last one as he had to dig around the back.I checked Mt Gravatt first but they didn't have any, but suggested Garden City had last week still.

I imagine quite a few stores still have, but only sitting in the back store. The Carindale store also had 1 mountain bike left, and I believe they also got a good review. They may scan at old price but they are willing to discount all the old stock in the back if you ask. (Didnt know they were willing to do this)

Built it last night. Will run through and torque everything pre built tonight, then take it for a spin tomorrow. Saved me at least $400 for a similar spec entry level. Should pay for itself within 4 weeks based on weekly train costs!

    Thanks!
