Which Car Insurance Are You with and Why?

Which car insurance are you with and why? Looking to change from Just Car Insurance, as they will no longer be in business after Jan 2017.

  • Coles, three cars, fly buys, 2 points per $ per policy spend.

    • +1

Any experience with Coles claims process?

      • Not yet 🚪👈

      • We have Coles home contents insurance, had a claim ( kitchen flooded, pipe burst) They were fantastic to deal, really surprised. Would recommend.
Don't know about car insurance though.

      • Wife's car was hit in a carpark. Coles claiming and processing was flawless and I also highly recommend the repairer Autoco in Canberra.

        • Can say Allianz is good. Paid just under $600 for comprehensive insurance with a $600 excess. Never have issues. Can also recommend Fuller Brothers in Canberra. They did a quick job and gave me a free shitbomb of a car to use while it was being repaired. Not many places give you a car to use while its being fixed for free!! Its been over a year now since the repair and its good as new.

      • Have made one claim and had no issue.

        They are the cheapest around.

  • +2

    Coles.

Beat my previous insurer (CGU) by heaps.

    • I am with CGU through BUPA and yes they are expensive..Thanks mate…I will look at Coles.

  • Budget direct for my Car and AAMI for my bike - third party fire and theft on both.. cause they were the cheapest

And also i got a bobble head from budget direct

    • +2

Bobble head is a deal maker.

  • Was NRMA, now Allianz. No one else was close on premium.

    • Not even Coles?

      • +4

Nope, they were nowhere near. I could have used their price beat, but at the end of the day if you're not going to offer me an even remotely competitive quote upfront I'm not going to waste my time to try and save $50 because they will turn around and probably scam me on the repairs down the track. COmparing insurance quotes is difficult though as it relies on so many variables. I always tell people to do their own comparisons and pick the best policy they feel meets their needs. My quotes were from $650 to $2600 using the exact same details across a variety of insurers. The range is simply ridiculous IMHO. I avoided Youi because they are the biggest scumbags around.

  • +1

    Allianz and RACV

  • Progressive. Cheap but fairly reliable.

    • +1

I was with progressive for a few years. Inexpensive at first. Most recent renewal was considerably expensive. Switched to Coles heaps cheaper.

      • +2

Never renew. I take out new policies every time. I have to type all the stuff in, but it's about 2/3 the price of a renewal.

        • Even doing a new quote it was more expensive. :(

  • +1

Shopped around and NRMA had the cheapest premium for my needs (3rd party insurance only)

  • +1

    Progressive
3 cars both of us insured to drive any of them, fully comprehensive just over $900 for all 3 which is cheap considering one of the cars is a soft top. Previously with bingle who were also good but couldn't do a multiple car policy.

  • NRMA because my wife is older than me and they cover everyone who drives the car :P

Oh and they are the same price as Allianz and AAMI.

  • +1

Dodo because they were much cheaper then my Coles previous policy. Got a free Pendo Pad and a $50 credit on my electric bill which is also with Dodo.

  • +2

Budget Direct: Cheap and because everyone else won't insure an under 30yr old with a sports car.

Claim is decent, submitted a few quotes and they chose the best repairer for me not because it was the cheaper one.

  • +1

Woolworths. Cheapest (even after adding windshield replacement, lower excess and higher agreed value), call up every year and get a bonus gift card on top, same price to pay monthly.

  • +2

AAMI, because I used to work in contents insurance claims and they were one of the less painful companies to deal with.

  • +1

I'm with Woolworths, switched to them from my already cheap progressive policy when they had the $100 price beat. They were not impressed! However when I had to renew they remained cheaper so I stuck with them.

  • +1

Budget Direct (1 Year), Real Insurance (4 Years), Woolworths (1 Year) and now Coles 2+ Years. Had two no fault claims during this period. One with Budget Direct and the second with Coles. Both were hassle free. Find Coles to be currently the cheapest for me..

    • How is Real insurance and Woolworths…Any claims?

  • BEEN WITH COLES FOR YONKS EASILY THE LOWEST CAR INSURANCE AROUND.
CHEAPER THEN ALL THE OTHERS PUT TOGETHER.

  • +2

RACQ for all, multi-policy discounts, plus being gold members we get extra.

Have had three claims through them and they were settled brilliantly and quickly.

    • +1

Check the price every year though.
I am with them too and every renewal I get is a heap more than if I went and got a new policy with them.
Last year was over $100 more, this year ( just got the renewal) its $60 more.
I call them and they can't do anything, say just cancel the policy and start a new one.. Crazy.

  • Bingle as it was the cheapest for comprehensive since I'm <25 and still paying a pretty penny no matter who I go with. No experience with the claims process (un)fortunately.

  • +2

AAMI, My car got stolen a few years ago, they were easy to deal with and they had the money in my bank account within 2 weeks. I'm happy to pay a little more for an Australian based contact centre and no hassle. I never renew my annual policy because they always ask more money for less cover. I just take out a brand new policy every year, which is cheaper than renewing.

    • +1

I'm with aami too and do the same as you in that I do a quote for a new policy and if it's cheaper I just ring aami and tell them to match their own quote and they do

    • Yes renewals are almost invariably a lot worse than the best offer. Also be aware that automatic renewal is the default with many companies - you can and should contact the company to change that before the renewal date. Have saved my family and relatives about $200 every year by doing online quotes - compared to the renewal quotes. Insurance companies (and banks) thrive on inertia.

  • +1

I switch between Coles and Woolies every year to get the best deal.

  • +3

Allianz, because they allow you to drive for Uber (which I do on and off for a bit of spare cash), whereas almost every other policy I've read won't cover you when driving for Uber.

  • +2

Shannons, they cover the car mods without raping me

  • +1

    AAMI: car,house & content.

  • +1

Ryno, because they cover my modified prestige luxury car with comprehensive and were cheapest.

But it's only for less common vintage, classic and prestige models.

  • A high percentage of insurers are owned by Sun Corp.
A few like RACV, NRMA etc are non Sun Corp.
So Just Car, GIO etc are all owned by one financial group, policies for making clams are pretty much the same.

  • Allianz and GIO

I take a new policy every year after quickly reading the PDS for any changes

I will share my story about Youi.

Bought a slightly old Toyota Rav 4 as a third car, nothing special and stock standard. Went and got 8 quotes from all the major companies, all were quite different in price. Spoke to the best 5 on the phone to get final prices.

I have pre-existing house and contents insurance through Youi, so thought I'd be able to get a discount there. Spoke to them on the phone and their final price for insurance was $800 more than the next lowest in my list. I was quite surprised. I told the consultant about this and he said it's the best they could do. I work from home so the car wouldn't go out much and would be under my eye a lot of the time.

This was during the time their "we get you" TV ads were on every ad break at night with that smirking little twit. I just wonder how many poor souls they are ripping off with their approach.

    • When I checked out Youi a few years ago, it was around $20 cheaper than RACQ only. Wasn't worth it for the savings and the hassle of claims ( I know a few friends with problems claim and repair wise with Youi)

  • Anybody has any experience with Insurance Box?

  • QBE.
Was researching right up to the moment of car delivery, then got caught up with something and decided to go with what the dealer offered -_-

  • Our vehicles (both >10 yrs old) have been insured with AAMI, Woolworths (Hollards), Coles and Aust Post. (Auto&General) at various times. Wife has just bought a new car and after doing 6 online quotes, Coles and NRMA (surprise to me) were >$200 cheaper than the rest. Both came in around the $480 mark/$850 excess. So either Coles or NRMA will get our new policy.

I also used a comparison site claiming 21 different companies and the cheapest was Budget Direct, again at >$200 above Coles & NRMA. Moral - don't bother with comparison sites, do your own online quotes then ask you existing insurer if they'll match or get close. Coles still claims they will try to do better than other quotes, Woolworths has dumped that and other incentives it seems.

Both Coles and AAMI were excellent following accidents (both not at-fault). AAMI used to be cheap until the company was sold 5 or 6 years ago.

  • Coles. Because they beat the cheapest by a further $100 and I didn't have to deal with telemarketing BS (Coles online chat is awesome).

  • How ridiculous is this ? Currently with NRMA and today i changed my details for my address as i moved, saved $40~ instantly… Perfect i thought.

Jumped on the nrma site and got quote for what i have atm just to see what would come up…. saved another $100 for nothing ??!!
Called them up got the quote checked, exact same as my current policy, so i got them to change me over.

So before jumping ship try quoting the same policy with your insurer you may just save some cash and save the hassle of moving around constantly!

  • Have been with Bingle for 2 years (cheapest price I could find) but just switched to Woolworths because of their price beat and $100 gift card promo.

  • I'll have to make this decision later this year (JCI policy will be ending).

Problem is I have an 18 year old turbocharged Japanese import car that well, isn't even in the list of cars to get online quotes for most insurers.

I was paying a bit under $600/year with a $1000 excess or so (no claims in last 5 years, I'm in my mid 30s, live in SA).

Which of the aforementioned insurers besides Shannons would consider insuring such a car for a reasonable price?

    • Just Car Insurance has shut down so Shannons is only option :(.

  • HBF, they use CGU.

Went with CGU due to the lowest rates of rejected claims (know quite a few lawyers that deal with insurance matters).

They also have a very quick turnaround.
