TRI-1CE - unfortunate name that for the aspiring kiddies.

    • Not N1CE to TRI-1CE. Unless you aspire to join club 27.

All it's missing is the pick of destiny

The generic code if any one wants it 92159417301. Plus $18 delivery. Should probably add to OP :)

  • Purchase = guitar number eight. i'm going to be in trouble with wifey.

    • +1

You should learn to buy similar colours and types and then she will find it harder to notice, as I am guessing you only play one at a time. This only takes me to 6, 2 of which are "on loan from a friend" and the others look fairly similar and are stored in my office.

    • That's okay. You'll do better with wife number two ;-) ducks for cover ;-)

Nah you don't get into real trouble until you run out of storage space ;P

(My new guitar is my Christmas gift from the missus and kids)

  • the question has to be asked, are these any good? Currently play a Valencia classical as I have not really been a fan of steel string acoustics

    • I've checked them out. Very reasonable.

    • It's a good compromise. The sound is good, although yes the steel strings are different. I got it for my son so he could use it with the xbox and 'Rocksmith' to practise.

    • Depends on the definition of good really. I mean these are laminated top wood guitars - it will play music I guess.

You could get a decent used art and lutherie for 150-200 if you searched on gumtree which would blow it out of the water.

      • +2

Well yes, kinda. Not all A&L guitars have solid tops and comparing this with something you might be able to find used on Gumtree for twice the price that has a RRP of $600 or more is not really the point…..

I agree that for a couple of hundred dollars you might be able to do a lot better hunting for a used guitar, but this fit the bill just fine for my son.

        • That's fair enough.

To be honest, I guess my point is you can find far better bargains on guitars when you buy used rather than new - and obviously you won't see these types of deals on ozbargain.

    • would these have a relatively low action as i think that was half the problem i found with steel string acoustics and why they hurt my fingers

  • Signed up, but only got sent a code for a Bluetooth speaker.

If anyone has a spare code for the guitar, I've been hanging out for exactly this kind of deal for a Christmas present.

    • +1

      Sent via message. Cheers.

      • Thanks mate, I used it. Possibly it's generic.

        • It is as stated in an above comment.

  • Bought one of these last time it was on special. Not bad at all. Decent sound, well made for the (discounted) price. Built in tuner works well. Good starter guitar. Learn from me, and be careful you don't over tighten and break a string though… ;-)

  • Thank you @altomic

  • Generic code worked for me as well.
    Merry Christmas ;)

Thanks altomic, code worked beautifully. Salesman was quite surprised!

  • Appears the guitar is no longer able to be purchased online :(

Bought this and here's my mini-review, since no one ever seems to review them.

Summary: Not as nice as I was hoping. Ok for $98.

Finish: Blemishes in the wood are a bit of a disappointment - at least half a dozen including discolouration on the headstock at the label. You're not going to hide these but most people won't care too much at this price point.

Action: Was very high but a bit of fiddling with the truss rod and while still a tad high it's acceptable (about 3-4 mm at the 12th fret, 3 would be nicer for an acoustic but it's still okay - no more turn left on the truss rod.) Might be able to do better if I was willing to shave the nut. Shaving the top of the saddle is risky because they're usually not easily removable attempting to will dampen the pickup. Shaving the bottom is almost impossible. I'm not going to risk it. This is good enough and no buzz from my limited testing.

Sound: Sound is a tad anemic but not terrible unamplified. (Haven't tried through amp - too late at night). Different strings might help but the wood on this guitar sounds cheap. Amplified with an EQ might be okay. Will write back if I get a chance.

Intonation: ..isn't perfect either - probably 3-5 cents out at the 12th on 2 of the strings (according to the crappy tuner - will have to try with a different one to confirm.) You could fix this by filing or shimming at the nut if you think you'll be playing higher up the fretboard.

Feel: Fret board feels a bit cramped and was having trouble with D to Dsus4 but that's my fat out of practice uncallused fingers partly to blame.

Hardware: Unfortunately tuning pegs are sloppy and tuner is imprecise.

    Thoughts:
If I had paid $222 retail price on this I'd be spewing. At $98 the price feels about right…a little rougher than the older ALDI guitars which actually had some re-enforcement (though the latest lot they seemed to have cut corners from the couple of samples I saw). Note that the ALDI guitars had pickups but no built in tuner.

You can do better than this guitar but not for this amount of money. It's definitely playable. I like to fix crappy guitars to play their best and I was a little disappointed with this one. My older Monterey and ALDI guitars have spoilt me.

thank you for taking the time to write such a thorough review.

      • You're welcome. Tried it out with the amp. The EQ allows you to improve the sound a bit.

I put it up against the older Aldi Livingstone guitar and I prefer the Livingstone hands down. The Livingstone doesn't have the built in tuner but everything else is better and the Tribute tuner is usable but not great.

I'm thinking of putting mine up on Gumtree. If I can get $100 for it I'm ahead $2. Will run it past the wife first though as she gave the all clear to buy it as an early Christmas gift from her and the kids. Would still be okay for a beater. Not going to spend $100 on a case for it though.

i check one out instore on the weekend. to me (amateur -2 years of lessons i.e. "anyway here's Wonderwall") for a beginner - no problem/no brainer. . cheers

        • @altomic:

I'd bet you play better than I do at the moment. IF you can afford it a slightly better instrument will make playing more pleasant. But if it's your first semi-acoustic and you're enjoying it that's great. They say you should get something nicer so you'll stick at it but I find most people who stick at it would stick at it if you put strings over a shoebox anyway. If the guitar had slightly lower action I'd probably keep it. I like playing higher up the fretboard. Anyway it may not sell in which case I'm stuck with it.

        • To paraphrase Jack Black: "This is not the greatest guitar in the world. This is just a Tribute."

      • I upvoted the deal and your comments. Want to make it clear that I appreciate that you posted.

    • +1

Thanks so much for your review. You have confirmed my concerns of it having a high action.
I'm not so disappointed that I missed out on getting it now (as online order are no longer available)

      • If anyone in the Sydney area wants one and is willing to travel to Quakers Hill or Bella Vista, PM me.

It's not awful, just not as good as I already have. If I didn't have my ALDI guitars I'd have kept this and last time ALDI sold those guitars they weren't as well made. So I don't feel bad selling it to someone for around the same price.

Probably moronic of me to post such an honest review when trying to sell, but I am not so desperate for the cash that I'd try to rip anyone off.

Another option would be to just try to return it for store credit.

If I can't sell it and can't return it I'm going to give filing the top of the bridge down a go. There is absolutely no buzz at the moment with normal playing. If I can get it down 1.5mm at the bridge the action won't be off-putting. I'm only wary because I've caused damage to a guitar doing this before by going too quickly and not being patient.

I don't know why musical instrument manufacturers do this. It wouldn't take too much more effort or money to make the guitars much more playable.

        • Guitar now sold. (For a modest profit too).
