  • For playing content like netflix/iview from an android or ipad device to the tv?

    A chromecast 2 is a no-brainer if that's the use case…

Its for my 55 year old parents lol, they struggle with smartphones.

Chromecast is very easy to use. /shrug

        • I don't know… if a 3 y.o. can't use it… there will be people out there that won't know how to use it.

        • If you have the basic skills to use a phone yes, my mother has little interest and would require alot of help. I had to setup her email because she couldnt lol.

        • @ProjectZero:
Confirming that a 3 year old can indeed use a Chromecast..
My 3yo thinks it hilarious to cut into my Cast to put Youtube Kids on the screen I'm watching.

        • @scubacoles: Welp, all i can say to that is, your kid is a lot smarter than my mum… I've tried to explain how chromecast works, she still can't figure it out…

I like the Roku 3 or 4 or streaming stick. Comes with its own controller and is dead easy to use. No mucking around with secondary devices like a Chomecast which i found very clunky and unreliable.

    • Chomecast which i found very clunky and unreliable.

Plus it's reason for existing is to allow Google to collect every single piece of data it can about the users of the Chromecast in order to make them spend more money after being exposed to advertising.

    • Personally have found SmartTV's and TV boxes to be more clunky…
Predominantly when inputting text to search for something specific, but general navigation as well.

I picked up a Mi Box from Walmart and am very happy with it for my needs. Streaming TV & Movies.
Plays Netflix in HD - chromecasting only does SD from tablets, mobiles etc.
Installing apps from Playstore is easy, though only apps modified for Android TV can be installed this way.
I'm currently researching installing FoxtelGo app which isn't as easy to install, but I believe downloading the APK file and installing it via a USB stick is the answer.
And of course you'll need to load Kodi from Playstore and find a recommended "build" as reviewed on youtube.

The Mi remote comes with microphone for speech searching on youtube, playstore etc. Very accurate.
I've also got a Bluetooth mini keyboard/trackpad (mouse)coming to speed up keyboard entry,
though you can install an app on your mobile to provide a bluetooth keyboard and trackpad/scrolling instead.

Looking through the Xiaomi Mi website, their Mi TV which includes the Mi Box built in looks great.
    http://www.mi.com/en/mibox/

Watch out for all those Chinese "pre-loaded with Kodi" boxes. You need Android TV, not the cheaper mobile equivalent.

    • So what would be the difference between the Mi Box and say the following?

      http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/371561487162?_trksid=p2060353.m14…

How does this differ from the Mi Box aside from price, external aesthetics?

Mi Box would be running Android TV while the one you linked is running Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Android TV is great if you want HD Netflix, but not so good if you're after more apps and games.

        • Thanks for that, do you know if there is a difference between Kodi on Android and Android TV?

My parents h.TV 3 seems to be having stuttering issues after we moved over to NBN (don't understand how that could be possible though) so I'm in the market for a TV box that has access to asian tv. Any suggestions?

        • +1

@ProjectZero: KODI can be installed through the App store for both Android and Android TV. Manufacturers of the Chinese Android TV boxes often have a modified version of KODI installed for better compatibility with the hardware and addons.

As for access to Asian TV… that's beyond me but I'm sure others will know.

My parents have been using a cheap MK808B running Kodi for around 2 years. Have a few addons running so they can watch foreign TV / Movies and soccer matches for my dad. The newer MK808B plus can be had for around $35 from ebay, dx etc. My parents are in their 70s and English isn't their first language and have managed fine with it. You might need to set it up for them though! :-)

    • What add-ons do you have? I've got a Mi Box waiting for me at the post office and pretty keen to organise some Premier League streams though it. My current set up is Ace Media Stream on PC via HDMI…

  • Telstra Tv, sister has one and it's easy to use.
Or get them on the basic Foxtel, 26 per month and they can record shows etc as well.

    • They have foxtel, dont like the channels included.

  • I suggest Apple TV if you can afford it, everything just one click + navigation, of course voice control if your parent think it's hard to control by RC. by the way, Mi box is also with voice control with cheap price. I also recommended it
