    Hmmm I thought N450 / 6 cell / 1GB RAM netbooks should be $299~$350 by now.

This doesn't seem like a good price in comparison to the netbook deals we've had from COTD.

N455,so it is upgradeable to DDR3 memory.

      • Yeah, but that's it? Spec for spec wise there is virtually no difference between these 2 CPU's save for DDR3 memory support. The CPU is still clocked at the same speeds and have the same cache size.

Will a simple DDR3 memory upgrade benefit a single core netbook that much?

        • No, you'll get no performance benefit from DDR3 in this setup.

        • Real world difference would be like half a percent faster over DDR2 ram or some other unnoticeable value

      • Wikipedia states that DDR2 and DDR3 are electrically incompatible (different pin count), so even though the processor will work with either, it is likely that we are stuck with what the makers have used, and that is DDR2.

Apparently DDR3 has 30% less power usage than DDR2. I don't know how much difference that makes to the whole computer.

yea u can get these with similar specs for around 300 and they are name brand too. all i can see there is the N455 i think they are normally the n450 and maybe have a smaller hdd.

    • It's a netbook, unsure what you'd use 250GB worth of space for anyway.

      • +6

Netbooks are good for use when traveling. And also if you want to backup your digial camera photos when travelling, so you don't have to purchase extra memory cards.

        • True - I bought the Dell 10" for less than this at office works for the boss (aka the mrs. Netbooks are so convenient and they are so cheap you can use them as drink holders once their warranty runs out!

    • +2

errrm…medion is a name brand - they just aren't as popular

they have enought money to sponsor a fully pledged mid-field formula1 team by the name of Force India. To sponsor one of these teams needs not jut a bit of money, but a heap.

      • I thought Medion was one of Aldi's brands?

        • its Aldi's inhouse brand for tech goods. Like the VIVO 42inch TVs that are just made for Dick Smith

          • +1

@Roja: Medion's done some wonderful things for the world, like rebranding the saitek eclipse ii and selling it for only $50. Afaik medion netbooks are/were rebranded msis

      • +2

if I remember correctly, Medion is an German company(so as Aldi)

they just lost the chance to get into world cup final, maybe it's time to get serious on computers? lol!

  • +3

Well at least this has built in Bluetooth and Wireless N capability.

I reckon in 3~5 months you should be able to get a D5xx series dual core Atom netbooks for $400~450.

    • +5

And it has a Multitouch Pad, 250gb HDD, upgradeable RAM, 3x USB & 1x VGA port and a relatively large back-lit 1024 x 600 display with stereo speakers (for what they're worth).

Plus Windows 7 & M$ Works and some other stuff.

So all in all not a bad deal with 2 years warranty and Aldi's 60 days return policy.

The Asus from Crap of the Day http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/27785 was cheaper - after jumping through Paypals cash-back hoops - but the specs are significantly different.

Also ALDI has a 60 day refund policy

      • -3

I like the name of Crap of the day XD

        • Full disclosure: I've actually bought a laptop and other stuff (non-crap) from them.

They do have a reputation for tardiness with deliveries, but other than that have been OK from my personal experience.

Thankfully I haven't had to attempt a warranty return, or get a refund. That, reportedly has stretched the friendship with some customers.

  • The main issue with these lesser known brands, is when its time to replace the battery, it becomes very expensive, if not impossible.

This is one of the biggest advantages of buying an ASUS, aftermarket batteries are cheap and easy to source.

    • Apparently the Medion Akoya E12xx netbooks use the same type of battery as the MSI Wind U100 series

    • +1

By the time the battery is gone, I think the laptop should be chucked out or sold for $100 on eBay. How long are you going to have it? 4 years?

      • MSI Wind U100 series

Oh Ok, that makes it more appealling.

How long are you going to have it? 4 years?

If you were to use the battery each day just a few hours, you will notice a signficant decrease in battery life after just a year. Depends on how important battery life is to you I guess.

  • If you can wait, wait for the upcoming model. But if you need one now, buy this, I don't think there's anything better in the market at this price range with a 2 year warranty. But I'm not sure for all you Linux fans how well a distro would work on it.

    • I think Linux should work extremely well on this machine; unless you know different?

      • I don't know different, its just an assumption on an unbranded machine. Considering its unbranded, I imagine it must have very limited testing in the FOSS community. But it's just an assumption. My eeepc machine doesn't run Ubuntu very well, I had to find drivers for wireless and the mic doesn't work… Maybe 10.04 works better.

[EDIT: As mentioned below, it seems like they are re-badged MSI's, then I assume they would work fine with Linux depending on the compatibility status of Winds.]

    • Which upcoming model do you speak of? Are you talking about the Canoe Lake platform at the start of next year?

      • Whatever mythical rumor model people talk about ;)

  • Wait till Intel port Android to Atom processor.

    • Android wouldn't be particularly useful on a netbook.

On touch enabled devices like iPed / wePad, yes, but netbooks will be better off running Windows since it supports more hardware.

  • Aldi netbooks are almost always rebadged MSI
Just keep in mind there have been a few netbooks around $300 in the last few weeks. COTD Asus Eeepc 10" and MSI Wind U100 (pink) @ online computer come to mind..
If it was sub $325 it would be a very good price (larger hard drive in the Medion)

The guy said this time ALDI doesn't use MSI platform, and although the fan is there, the heatpipe seems to be absent.
Anyone has technical explanation for this?

    • The more I see of this little netbook the more it looks like a pretty good buy. 2gb RAM would make it an absolute no-brainer.

Re the heatpipe: I suspect the designers felt that the relatively small uncluttered areas on the board would provide enough funnelling to risk not putting in a dedicated airway. Also in the demo, Hans Onhead was working it fairly hard, and the fan speed, although a little noisy, was proportionately ramping up and down, meaning quite fast & efficient temp sensing & response.

    • The heatpipe can tend to fail, usually they contain a gel like substance which can dry out therefore making it a true heat pipe ie it gets hot and is supposed to remove the heat from the processor/heatsink

As long as there is a heatsink should be okay the heatpipe in my opinion is a terrible idea for a small notebook

    • More comprehensive and useful review than the tech mag sites!

  • 10.1" screen is too small for me. I'm after a 11.6" or 12" netbook like the Aser 751h for $300.00 if there is such a deal. I missed out on the last deal which had the Acer cash back by a few days.

    • From what I hear Acer's aren't too reliable, but since they are pretty cheap, you could get an extra 2 years of warranty and still pay less than this Aldi one. Warranty is pretty easy to negotiate, except with big bureaucratic companies like Myers (Woolworths).

  • Picked one up at closing last night. I've only really run up Windows on it and did a quick web browse but so far I'm very impressed. As for the screen, surprisingly, it doesn't feel small once you start using it. I guess if you were doing CAD drafting or whatever then maybe it might begin to feel constrained, but in all it's deceiving. It feels like it doesn't need to be any larger than what it is.
Setup was painless and a poorly trained monkey could do it, and once I switched wifi on, it was plain sailing.
Speakers are much better than I expected after having given them a run by streaming some of my music collection from my media centre. They give great depth of field producing a really clean and effective surround effect.
The battery life is yet to be really tested, however I had on for about 1.5hrs just setting up and browsing and It told me it had over 4hrs in reserve. Although it protrudes noticably from the bottom of the case, it's clevery designed to angle the keyboard nicely when placed on a flat surface, which suited me perfectly.
I'm going to enjoy not only travelling with this thing, but using it every day at home to replace our ageing Dell desktop.
