  • Great use of cashback & credits, but I have to ask - what sort of school requires students have a Macbook?!

    • Roma Mitchel High School in Adelaide.
      Its a public school

      • That's crazy for a public school! Is any laptop okay or do they demand it be a Mac?

        • Must be a Mac.
We dont live in the school zone for RMHC
The school is popular and if we didnt get him in he would be going to a private school at $7500 per year ++….and still have to buy a lap top so having to buy a Mac for this school doesnt bother us at all.
I was just happy that I subscribe to this newsletter….it saves me a lot of money!!

our sons school, they were all supplied mac airs.
i still think $1300 for a base mac air is way over priced though.

Agreed but after having a closer look at it, it does look to be well made and easy to use. I haven't even touched one until today.

As mentioned, our son had one for 4 years.
It's perfect for school. The computer had been dropped a few times an the aluminium just dented a little. Still worked fine.
He did break a screen about 6 months ago, knocked a lamp over and it hit the plastinf Apple on the screen, screen was closed and if it hit the metal part of the screen it would have been fine I think.
Had some issues with a shift key not working and audio jack not working to, school fixed all these. Laptops were school supplied and maintained.
Battery life is great, they weren't allowed the charger at school so charged at home and it lasted the full school day.

My point is I think they are a bit over priced for the tech they are. But it worked well for him from year 9 -12 and still uses it.
For school the design it great I think and more durable than others. I am far from an Apple fan but for our son I think it was perfect.

Ask me questions if you like.

        • @PVA: Thanks for the info and thanks for offering to answer any future questions that i'm sure I will have.
          Very much appreciated!

Ridiculous how schools now expect parents to pay a laptop, back in the days, we used physical textbooks

    • If children don't learn about and use todays technology, how are they going to Order KFC using an App such as that you posted https://www.ozbargain.com.au/user/181508/nodes

      physical textbooks = back injuries

ipad would be ideal, but the mandatory macbook/laptop will be the death of handwriting.

and it's already signalled the the death of spelling, you can see it now at the early university level. we rely on auto correct.

universities now just lower their standards to ensure people pass.

even junior doctors are struggling to remember critical information, because why bother if you can just google it?

kids need to drink more milk then

      • ipad would be ideal

I completely disagree there. My eldest has just finished highschool having had Macbooks the whole time. My youngest is in year 8 and has had iPads for the last 2 years. The iPad is a horrible device for young teenage kids to have, it's treated like shit and abused constantly, they all get on social media and are little turds to each other with it - none of that occurred with the Macbooks.

        • haha and you can't abuse a macbook? and the macbook can't access social media?

          wow. just wow.

@insular: I'm not saying that at all, but the macbook's certainly were treated with a lot more respect than the ipad has been.

the main issue is the front and back camera's on the ipad have meant that many of the kids in school are taking photos of themselves and others (including teachers) all the time then sharing them with comments added. this is treated as cyberbullying.

again, i'm not saying that macbooks can't be used in a similar manner but it's really quite obvious when a kid is taking a photo of others with a macbook in a way it's not with the ipads.

    • Back in the day my dad had to walk 10kms uphill both ways to get to school.

  • Doesn't even make sense to me why it has to be a macbook air. I bet the school really can't justify why it has to be a macbook air. And if the student have to purchase these macbooks, shouldn't the government be helping them? instead of the general 10% discount for students, they should maybe increase it to 20-30% to help families out, but in saying so they must limit or add a aspect where people cant exploit or abuse the discount for students. Anyway the macbook air is ideal and great for education use, however that isnt the only option out there and student shouldn't be limited to that option as well. In all honesty a notebook with an SSD with microsoft office will suit the needs of a student quite well and should suffice. There are plenty of laptops out there, that are well under the $1000 price mark that will easily suffice school needs.

    • I'm sure the school would be getting some sort of kick back.
The school also loads applications onto the computer so it would make sense to have everyone working with the same computers and applications. Personally would have preferred a cheaper windows machine and I agree that the government should offer some sort of subsidy that is means tested.

ive been thinking about it, and yes it makes sense that when everyone has a macbook, it is easier to operate and install the applications onto their laptops, i also think that majority of students want a macbook air, however students at that school will hold no individuality, lol. It's alright at the end though, however the most ridiculous aspect is that the school expects parents to fork out $1300 for a macbook air, and that is probably the lowest price you can get it at stores, it only gets higher from that price point.
