  • Wouldn't a convection microwave be much more versatile?

      versatile

      You spelled expensive wrong.

      • Not really, under $300 for a sharp at overpriced HN

Correct me if I'm wrong, but a microwave doesn't have a direct heating element. I have had this particular over for the past 3 years and I can testify it is terrific. The temperature runs a bit low and the timer is restricted (2 hours only) but overall, it does the job.

      • direct heating element

That's the convection part of "convection microwave".

    • Wouldn't a convection microwave be much more versatile?

No. A convection microwave has a small "browning element", but primarily cooks by Microwave. So, perhaps 1100W Microwave and 800W browning/convection.

Once you get past the stage of "heating things up", a Microwave is a FAR more limited and less versatile device than a proper oven. You cannot cook jack shit is 800W or so of convection, once you switch off the microwave part.

These are great little units. Highly recommend.

  • I've been reading a lot of stuff about people that try to go off grid, or on grid with a battery. One of the big users of power is the oven so something like this could do some of what you might do in a conventional oven.

Reading reviews you might want to check them out - seems a lot have the same error.

Ha ha.. which is me and why I gave it some thought. I considered this for a few minutes…

We currently use an electric slow cooker (we kill our own poultry and occasional rabbit) and an induction hotplate but will probably get a convention microwave with grill to replace our normal microwave (Aldi have the convection version once a year) as a 'better' option rather than having a separate microwave.

Especially use the electric griller part of the convection microwave instead of the gas griller in the stove which we use often… We have a gas stove for stuff like our own bread but through the day I'd rather use 'free' electricity (and zero CO2 emissions) when possible .

      • I bought the Aldi (Stirling) convection microwave earlier this year when I just missed out on these on sale for $250. Honestly the convection part of the Aldi is pretty shit, it burns everything on top without cooking it through (No, I'm not accidentally using the grill option). It has a pre-heat function and says it's reached temp really quick, which is bullshit, if I put a thermometer in there it takes 10-20 mins just like a normal oven. The only way it works is to place a metal colander upside down over your food so it blocks the direct heat from the element and creates an oven inside your oven. I think I'll get this breville as well, I was trying to only have one appliance.

    • One of the big users of power is the oven so something like this could do some of what you might do in a conventional oven.

These use about the same power as a normal (cheap) oven.

      • Maybe the max draw, but overall I think they would use less to reach and maintain temp.

I know our wall oven takes at least half an hour just to get to temp, something like this is there in prob a third of the time at most.

        • These small ovens have ZERO insulation. So nowhere near as efficient on the long baking jobs.

        • @llama:

This one is double walled for the most part and seems to hold its temp quite well.

It is built a fair bit better than the $99 ones.

Agree though insulation makes a difference, that's why my next wall oven is going to be pyrolytic, for the better insulation first, self cleaning second.

        • @bamzero:

This one is double walled for the most part

          They are ALL double-walled LOL

It is built a fair bit better than the $99 ones.

We only have a benchtop oven, no main oven at all. The main problem is that the benchtop models don't have an interior surface that can be cleaned. After a roast pork, they are absolutely feral.

So, we just throw then away each year and get a new one. I am doing that this week.

          They are ALL double-walled LOL

          Nup, not my last one

Single walled thin sheet metal top and back and the full glass door, that thing was terrible at holding heat… Did only cost me $50 though.

Great oven!! Bought one a couple of years ago and I use it all the time.

  • does anyone think that it'll be cheaper than boxing day sales?

  • +2

spend extra $12 for amex deal $100 credit

    • Hi do you mean at Harvey Norman - I think that is not available unless you've joined the offer. Not sure how the AMEX deals work as I don't have amex - partner does.

  • Would this be a good microwave alternative? I want to stop using the microwave.

    • +1

Would this be a good microwave alternative? I want to stop using the microwave.

Why? Have you been listening to those nutters who claim microwave ovens cause your testes to mutate.

      • +1

Haha, nothing to do with my testis, they are at their prime state. More so to do with Radiation concerns.

  • +2

Awesome bit of kitchen kit, I use it almost daily. Very well built, really good features, cant recommend it enough.

  • +1

Another positive vote for this oven. Have had one for at least 3 years. Use it often. Still going strong.

  • how much is it when not on sale?

    • The sale price isn't that special to be honest, I think $299 is a fairly standard going rate, but with the Breville promo I think the effective price of $238 is ok (a recent OzB post had it at ~$246)

Looks like Myers had it at $279 until a few days ago when they bumped it back to $349 (probably because they had a 15% discount offer which has ended now, so it may go back down)

  • These are fantastic - we use ours everyday. Better than firing up the main oven!

  • Hi guys, I have used the oven for the past 3 years, it has served me well, however there was a cockroach in the LCD screen, and I could not get it out, I have not used that machine since then….

  • This oven is great. We bought one about 6 months ago and now only use the big (standard) oven when we can't fit something this one (which is not very often).

  • wrongly

  • So how does the $50 cashback work? do i just wait till they email me back?

    • +1

I've only got one email back so far saying they'd received the submission, from memory I think said would receive eftpos card by 28th Jan.

    • +1

Actually just had a look, got a confirmation email of submitted details straight away, then the next day an email saying it was pending validation. T&C's say card will be sent within 28 days of receiving the claim.

      • okay thanks for the info!
