Be aware that these flights are during the Chinese New Year period, and many places will be shut. Then again, it could be a great opportunity to experience China in its week of celebration. It's Christmas and Easter rolled into one!

    • +1

Been there during this period a few years ago. Fireworks, fireworks everywhere

    • +1

Probably the cleanest air you'll get all year round too

  • +14

Wow they're really slamming China Southern. It's funny that before competitive routes are brought in they are begging and pleading to the govt about how they're on their last legs and doing a service to the country maintaining these routes that are "barely profitable" at $2000/ticket. But then when competition does come in they crush them to the ground.

    Any sales to Shanghai?

    • +6

You can always catch the bullet train to Shanghai. 1,300km in Just 5 hours.

      • +4

easily the best way to travel within in china and a good experience. Shits all over chinese domestic air travel.

      • +2

by the way train ticket price ~ A$ 100

        • Yeah, it's RMB553 ….. so even a bit more than $100, but its cheaper and faster than flying, and far more memorable.

The other option is the 12 hour overnight train. It's half the price, and it gives you one nights accommodation.

      • Just make sure you book early (try Ctrip) as ALL seats can sell out during CNY and Golden Week.

  • +3

Wow this is crazy given its CNY! Might not be good for travellers coz it will turn into a ghost town but for people like myself who's families are in beijing this deal is too good to miss!

  • Crazy deal!!

  • +3

Beware its bloody cold there then, great deal though

  • See how fare you can go

    lol was that deliberate?!

    • +3

Puns that good don't happen by accident…. :)

  • Very cold, but a good down jacket it will be fine. Temps between -7 to +2.

I was in Hokkaido a few years ago in winter, temps never got above -6c (-15c up north) during the day. With a good jacket it's no problem.

Keep in mind the China visa is now ~$120.

    • +1

$109.50 for single entry, I just for one last week

      • Ok, thanks….. I got one in October ….. I couldn't quite remember the price, but I recalled it was significantly more expensive than last year when it was well under $100.

  • +2

These prices are so good almost worth going just for a few days but unfortunately don't like going to China, their visa prices and the type of info required on their application form is ridiculous. Similar fare to HK will definitely be more tempting and will book in a heartbeat !

    • Yeah pretty ridiculous that a visa is ~1/3 the cost of the flight from Australia.

  • Don't forget you are getting haze for free in Beijing. Can't imagine going there anymore.

    • Depends on luck and the time of year you visit. I was there last year and I had amazing blue sky. on a previous visit visibility was only about 1km.

      • +1

I'm going this week (well, not Beijing though) and I've been monitoring pollution levels and it's been looking pretty shit, to put it mildly. The govt had to tell a bunch of factories in Beijing to shut up because pollution has been so bad.

  • That's really cheap!! BUt it's freezing at that time still.

  • They must've way underestimated demand on this route to offer consecutive sales for $3xx return flights. Heck, as a platinum I'll get back 10,400 points ($104 worth), making the overall cost a trivial amount. Really do hope they continue the route though.

Also still waiting on the 10yr multi entry Chinese visa.

    • au gave chinese 10 yr visa not long ago, time to return the courtesy.

  • Hi rep slightly off topic question but: What happened to the flights from Melbourne to NYC on Qantas later in the year like late July early August? They were about $1,200? Is that coming back? Thanks very much :)

  • Just Googled Beijing weather January :-

"January is not the most ideal time of a year to visit Beijing. Although it is sunny most of the time, the weather is still bitterly cold and extremely windy and temperatures can drop to -20°C (4°F). However, the frequent snow fall makes this a good skiing season."

    Take care out there.

  • This is an amazing deal, although the cold and pollution in Peking in January is far from pleasant for sightseeing, and the city generally is an unpleasant concrete jungle.
