  • Bought one from Gearbest on a previous deal, battery arrived dead. They provided a replacement and were very good about it, but the new one also had a dead battery; tried multiple cables, chargers and ports, but would not hold any charge. :-S Gave up with them after that.

Did you buy the capacitor version like this one?
If so it's not supposed to hold any charge. The battery is replaced with a capacitor so that heat and Sun won't make it explode or anything

      • Yeah, is the capacitor version. I actually thought that, But it works while connected to a random USB port and then stops as soon as disconnected, with a battery indicator flashing in red with a line through it, hence why I thought it held charge. Just power cycles when connected in the car. What's the point in the motion detection if it can't hold charge then?
I went through it all with the Gearbest support and they just offered to send me another. Maybe a faulty car charger?

        • You do have to set them to turn off immediately they have a capacitor.
Motion detection could be used so the camera isn't always recording to the SD, only when things are happening around it. Will only work when plugged in though.
Could be if it's not saving the files when the car is turned off. Usually dash cams with capacitors will stop recording immediately when unplugged and then save the file and turn off

        • @jazzyman9182: Fair enough. Either way, the major issue was the power cycling when using in the car; would start up, say welcome, show the view for a second or so, turn off and start again.

Sorry Matthew but it sounds like you didn't do your research before buying. This is a capacitor based model, not a battery model so it will never meet your particular expectations. It's not designed to hold charge, it's designed to automatically power up and start recording when ignition is switched on (or whenever your cars cigarette lighter socket gets power) then when power is removed it just holds a few seconds worth of power to automatically shut itself down and safely save the last recorded video to the card. That's all they're supposed to do and as an owner of many of these that's exactly what they do and do very well, day in-day out for the last 18-24 months.

Not sure why Gearbest sent you a replacement when your units weren't in fact faulty but I suppose props to them for trying their absolute best to keep the customer happy even though it's no fault of theirs or the product. Top marks to them but this is why your replacement unit also seemed 'faulty' when in fact it's just the way they're designed to operate anyway. Unfortunately the manufacturers just used the same camera for both the 'battery' & 'capacitor' versions which triggers the battery level icon to indicate a low battery when in fact there isn't even a battery inside. They should've rectified this so it didn't confuse people but alas they didn't.

As a very happy user of these, the G1Ws definitely have their flaws though… mainly just date & time issues when left for a few days however that and the above battery indicator issue has been covered by many both here on OzBargain and across hundreds of reviews elsewhere. At the end of the day these were the best value for money dashcams available for at least 12-18 months straight but that was a good year to two ago and there have been other 'better' units released since that are also now down around this price.

@SteveAndBelle: As I mentioned in a previous post, I didn't expect that they held charge, I was just lead to believe it did by the flashing battery indicator, nor did I buy if for the motion detection, I was just curious as to what it's purpose was. I have two units that have been tested in 3 different vehicles/5 different 12v sockets, and both power cycle with both supplied car chargers. I did suggest this to Gearbest, and everything was explained and videos sent as proof. I purchased mine on recommendation from other OZBargainers.
I just put it down to bad luck.

        • @matthewk85: Lucky the neg was revoked from my above comment, I'm just trying to help the wider OzB community.

OK, I admit that I was still typing my last comment when you posted yours and your comment contained the most important info… the fact that it power cycles soon after power up. You didn't mention that in earlier posts so yes I agree yours definitely sound faulty. Bad luck for sure as I've bought dozens of these and they've all been excellent except for the known issues. Would I buy them now? No because there are other better units available now for around the same price without the annoying issues.

        • @SteveAndBelle:
What do you think the best budget dashcam currently is?

@Miikeboyle: I'd probably now go with an A118C such as this: http://www.gearbest.com/car-dvr/pp_142025.html?wid=21 as it suits my particular needs ie. stealthy, capacitor based, decent image quality, great value, 'set & forget'. These were available when I bought all my G1Ws last year however they were twice the price (or more!) at that point in time. Very good to see them finally drop to an affordable level.

    • gold. must remember that approach to get 2-for-1 ;)

      • Well I did explain the whole situation to them, so they clearly don't know how it works either. lol
I did originally request just a replacement car charger, but then they offered me a full replacement.

But then some people are opposed to stealing and realise that doing what you are proposing leads to worse returns options for all of us…

Battery died after 8 months of use…. Now it can no loner boot up and record. Pretty much cactus.

    • That's why this capacitor version is handy. Much more suitable for hot weather. However, because it doesn't hold a charge, mine loses the correct time and date from time to time.

  • Awful dashcam.

I bought one with a battery which died after 6 months. Bought this version and it appeared to work for an entire year. When we needed to extract data from it, it turned out the thing had frozen about 1 month after we started using it and hadn't recorded anything for about 11 months. We couldn't reset it, use the menu nothing.

Ended up buying a Rexing dashcam and for about $100 and it's worked for the last 3 months like a champ (so far).

hadn't recorded anything for about 11 months.

i hope you didn't expect the msd to store 11 months worth of vids. a 1080p vid takes about 8gb p/h of storage. one would need to use at least one or more 200gb msd.

      • That's not what I said. It didn't record video FOR 11 months, as in for a period of 11 months NOTHING was recorded because it froze. The expectation is that they record over older files when the memory fills up. The display worked and appeared to be functioning but nothing was happening. It basically was just a fancy decoration in the car.

  • Had mine for over a year and it worked very well. After a careless truck driver took my car out it helped insurance and myself. Insurance wrote the car off and sold it without removing my possessions from it. So I'll be getting this again…

Sorry to hear so many have had issues.

I bought one from Gearbest. These are not that reliable. Like others, mine seemed to work fine but in fact would freeze at ramdom times, without any indication. Once frozen, restarting the car made no difference No point having it if it doesn't work.

Gearbest were terrible to deal with to get a replacement. I went through paypal but they tried to trick me into delaying beyond the dispute window.
Cost me about $20 to send it back as well.

    Never again with Gearbest.

I also suggest avoiding this camera. Whilst it has a great picture of the price, it is unreliable.

    • This just happened to me as well, just a bit over 1 year of usage so might not be able to claim any warranty from them. It is still recording, but not continuously, it has like several minutes gap between recording. Almost crashed the other day and the footage is not recorded. Bought the Viovo A118C instead, from some comments, even though the image quality is not as good, but it is more reliable.

this is capacitor ones without a battery, why your guys keep saying battery dead!?
I bought 2 and used for more than a year, both fine, no issues!

  • Got 5 for the family last yr
Most of the time is freezes
The screen might look like its working
But it dont record, recording time freezes and shit.
Have to pull the power n plug back n have to always look at it regularly to see if working.. i got an A118 also and working well no probz yet.
    From my experience no good
    And 1 is dead..

    • This is what happened to mine. Except pulling the power plug didn't unfreeze it.

As confirmed with supplier, here are the two points you need keep in mind while use this item:
1-Pls dont open the Motion Detection function during driving,or it will lead to stop recording when your driving speed is very stable or when it think you stop driving.
2-Pls use over C10 speed TF card with it,or it will lead to dead, too.

    • I always use EVO 32GB, it only takes upto 32gb…
