Tyres Locked up through Red Light Camera

I was driving last night during a pretty intense storm.

I was approaching traffic lights on a steep hill which have a red light camera when they turned orange.
For a split second I though about just going through it but I thought.. being orange I should try and stop.
Now I have a new front wheel drive car I haven't driven much and as soon as I hit the brakes which I didn't press too hard the tyres locked up.
I was sliding down the hill about to run up the curb when I let go of the brakes and let the car roll through the intersection.
A split second before I crossed the line the light turned red.

Does anyone think I can dispute this or is this my fault for not 'driving to the conditions'?
Any advise would help greatly wherever you think I am in the wrong or right. Let's see if the I actually get an enforcement letter first I guess.

Cheers guys and merry Christmas!!

Take it to court, explain yourself and see what happens

Forget about it and learn to know the capabilities of the car you are driving

new cars have abs - you can't have locked up

    front wheel drive - irrelevant

wait for the post to deliver a ticket, then stress, don't waste your time now about something you have no control over

if no ticket arrives, then all good

If your wheels lock up in a new car, you need to take it back and get your ABS fixed.

    • Given he was driving in a "pretty intense storm" I would say the car aqua-planed - it would have felt and behaved similar to locking up the brakes. Either way the OP isn't getting out of this one.

  • Did the flash go off? Did you even get done?

  • Alot of those traffic red light boxes don't have cameras inside, as they only have a certain number of cameras and rotate them around.

  • if you locked up then you would have been better off just going thru…

  • Firstly I would advise you to check the breaks in your car.
If there was a issue with the breaks then you might have some justification for the court.
If the breaks are fine then you have learnt the limits of your breaks are much less than you expected and it has come with a cost.

You shouldn't have hit the breaks, you should pump them in these sort of conditions.

no you don't not in an ABS car, you push down and let it do the work with the pump

terrible advice to someone with ABS, you can cause a bigger issue doing this, you want to apply FULL force and hold it and try to steer around the issue

ABS applies the pulse motion to the brakes to allow you to regain control and go around the object / person

Yes, I'm aware. It's likely that his ABS brakes weren't working or the car doesn't have ABS. If you brake hard and the wheels lock, you don't just let go and let the car roll (what if you were heading straight for a pole, say), you let go to get the wheels rolling again, then you try to brake again, this time not jumping on the brakes again.

It's not that OP jumped on the brakes that's concerning, it's that he chose to roll through the intersection after realising his wheels locked.

        • Couldn't agree more
          Scares me somewhat

    Brakes not breaks

  • It's not uncommon to break something if your brakes break.

    Them's the brakes
You gotta roll with the punctures

You're clearly not capable of driving in the wet if you locked your brakes. Suggest attending a defensive driving course for all our sakes.

As for the red light, accept it if it arrives in the mail.

if your front tyres were already crossed the last line before it turned red then you won't be receiving a fine. It only triggers if the wheels are behind that last line when it turns red.

You need to buy yourself some driving lessons in defensive driving
call me what you want but locking up a new car on a hill in the rain tells me two things

    1. you were speeding
    2. you weren't driving to the conditions of the road

If there was no flash or no double flash you should be fine, it all depends, did you cross the intersection on the yellow or on the red?

Let this be an expensive lesson if you do get done.
