What to Get to Replace Galaxy S3?

Hello
My mom's Galaxy S3 still looks brand new, but internally started to play up - heats up, restarts, drops calls etc.
I will factory reset it, but want to get her a new phone for the NY.
She is happy with S3 performance - pretty responsive for just 1Gb of RAM running Android 4.3
Want to get her something not oversized, with OK camera (S3 has a pretty good one, in comparison to some others) and obviously not super expensive, as she just would not need all the bells and whistles.
Looking at the options, cannot really see anything of good quality for small money.
Don't want to give her Xiaomi phone either… Want something stable. Was thinking S4/S5 lines, but paying $200/$300 for the phone number of years old… Don't know.
What do you think?

  • Don't want to give her Xiaomi phone either… Want something stable.

Stable? Lol. I think the China-made Redmi Note Pro that i bought for my uncle is more smooth and stable than my korean-made Samsung Galaxy S5. Touchwiz is the worst thing to have happened to an Android smartphone. MIUI on the other hand, while trying too hard to be like Apple, works well enough for the average user to comprehend and use.

Anyway… enough of my rant, if you want a easy to use phone then look no further than a Motorola / Nexus series. The Nexus 5x was featured for $333 a month ago, the Moto G4 Plus 16GB for $299, and in the low-budget range there was the sony xperia XA for $229 which is now $288 from Officeworks

If you're willing to import, there's also the high-end, but budget-priced Lenovo ZUK2 phone, which goes for $250 AUD nowadays.

  • I did look at G4 plus, but its big…
May go with that in the end if I come across a good deal.
Did look at Zuk 2 as well. But it is similar to Xiaomi - overseas, may need to tinker with it all the time etc. Not what my mom needs.
Was thinking getting Zuk2 or Mi5 for myself and give my S5 to my mom, but still did not make up my mind about it… something is stopping me from getting one, though I added them to cart many times during different deals, but never proceed with it

Good guys I think was doing a S5 with $50 rebate for $399 before rebate.

  • But is it worth spending $350+ on the phone that old? I still use it, but finding that 2GB of RAM is just not enough on Android 6.
For $200 I can get Galaxy S4, for $300 - Motto G4 Plus (on special).
I was reading posts from last year - same old phones under $300 (not G4 obviously) and prices did not change in the last 12 months.
Does it mean that there was nothing decent releases in a budget phone range? China-brands released heaps with the looks and specs, just not sure about stability etc
On that note - what do you think I should do:
    1. Give my Galaxy S5 to mom and buy Mi5/Zuk2 for myself or
    2. Buy Motto G4 Plus for mom?

    • Option 1. Give mum your phone.

It was the other way around for me. She gave me her Galaxy S5, and for Xmas I got her a Moto G4 Plus. She likes the Moto for its bigger screen but misses the superior battery life of the S5 (apparently the s5 has better screen on time)
