I bought one of these for the Mrs 2 years ago.
Apparently these are a big deal… the ladies love this brand, apparently the best available.

I can't remember exact price, but I know it was over $250 and that was on sale.

If this is legit, its a VERY good price. Plus vote.

So people can see this as you have the top comment,

GHD =USED= to be the best, 10 years ago! they changed from Korean manufacturers to Chinese ones, and as such the quality has diminished dramatically. I've heard people say that their 6-10 year old GHD worked better than the brand new one straight out of the box. My best friend bought a new one when her old one died and returned it the next day.

They do not last anywhere near as long as the original ones either. From multiple comments i've seen on a beauty group on facebook they had to return theirs or buy new ones when they died just before or after the warranty expired.

Currently the most recommended straighteners are - Cloud 9, Glam palm (They manufactured the ORIGINAL GHD from 2001-2008) and Halo. I've also heard great things about Muk and H2D. Cloud 9 seems to be hyped a lot by people but there is also a lot of negative reviews. I would stick with Glam Palm, Halo or Muk as i've seen the most consistant positive reviews from them, especially glampalm.

Here are some reviews from yesterday from members of the facebook group:

-My sister has a new GHD and it sucks balls. Definitely doesn't compare to my GHD which is like 6 years old. Totally different so yeh, stay away from the new ones!

      • I agree! Before I got my cloud 9 I tried to stay loyal to GHD and got the wide plate.. horrible and felt really "plastic-y"..

      • I found the older Styler V from GHD to be awesome! I acquired the new Platinum, and stored away my old ghd, only to bring it back out a year later because my Platinum broke

      • I had my ghd for 7 years, tried the new ghd - was shit as. So I converted to Glam Palm! Best decision I ever made! I have thick, wild and wooly hair from root to tip and it straightens my hair so quick and leaves it so healthy!

      • Ghds are not what i thought they would be. Disappointment!!

This is on just one chat where a girl asked what straighteners people recommended, may I add there was not -1- good review on the new GHD.

Well said. Went through the same process a year or so ago. GHD has gone down hill and we ended up getting a Cloud 9.

  • Saw them instore this is legit

  • Nice find OP, great price

review in-case people just focuses on how much they save VS knowing exactly how good the product is.

Whoa! Was just about to jump at this for the missus. Those reviews paint a consistent picture of a very poor quality product, considering the reputation :(

Those reviews paint a consistent picture of a very poor quality product, considering the reputation

That site is beyond pathetic, I've seen great products trashed by people who are usually clueless or ill-informed.

Best advice is to ignore it.

I think its a case of bad news travels further than good news. Everyone is willing to go out of their way to complain, not so much to leave good reviews. I bought my wife and purple GHD 7 years ago and it still works like the day she first got it. I've offered to buy her a new one but she refuses to part with it

        • +6

Don't let her! Apparently the older ones are better than the new models - everyone I've spoken to or have read about says that the original ones were the best and they all regret 'upgrading' to the latest model. It seems to be since they moved production from Korea to China that quality has gone downhill

          @mouseketeer:
Apparently the ones to get now are Cloud Nine according to the missus… We were just discussing it this morning as I seem to have slightly missed the hints this Christmas.

          @moore22:

Cloud 9, Glam palm and Halo seem to be the 3 top choices these days. I've heard some not so great comments about Cloud 9's not lasting long before needing replacement though so it may be worth researching.

        • I have the purple one too, it's probably one of the last good ones. They were manufactured in Korea until the end of 2008 I believe where they changed to Chinese manufacturing.

GlamPalm's official productreview account claims that they manufactured the 2001-2008 models of GHD and they have consistantly great reviews, not just from productreview but from people I have spoken to.

@MattyD, if Mrs wants this… get it at this price fo sure!

Product Review is a good website (I use it all the time), but you need to remember that most people using it are venting their frustrations, and most who are happy aren't commenting. Also, GHD are the bees knees… a very popular brand. It stands to reason that more sales also means more potential faults.

Also, most of the negative ones are not verified purchases…. and all around the same date (4 of them on 27th Dec!), just before Christmas, by users with no other reviews. They come with 2 year warranty, and as long as you have proof of purchase there shouldn't be an issue. Some of those reviews don't make any sense. "Stopped working after 3 days, now I'm down $300. Not worth it". Bull crap. That's what warranty is for… unless of course they went cheap and bought off Ebay overseas. Who knows what the hell you're buying!!

        Yep- nothing sus there ;).

What I'm saying is, don't take Product Review as the end all be all, and try to ignore new reviewers with a single review to their name on the same date, and nothing more. Half the time its sockpuppeting by competitor brands.

Your Mrs will love it, trust me :).

        • Yes I figured with a two year warranty it was worth trying this new one for this price. As a few other posters have mentioned the older style GHDs have been going strong for several years but I wasn't aware of other options such Cloud Nine.

  • Cheaper to buy Cloud nine from UK. After doing a bit of research, I concluded that cloud nine is better than GHD. Bought one to my wife from the UK and warranty is international. Better still, it supports 120-240v.

    • +2

      Yes ! This is true.
Bought a GHD for the Mrs more than 10 years ago (paid even more then), still going.

Mrs was talking to her hairdresser the other day. She recommended Cloud Nine also. Says that GHD are no longer the quality brand they used to be. They have changed their manufacturing geared toward quantity rather than quality.

      • +1

Yep, in fact Cloud nine and Glampalm are both made at the same manufacturer as the original GHD that everyone raved about :)

    • +2

Where are people buying the Cloud Nine from, out of curiosity? (couldn't find it with an OB search)…

      • +2

I've been told the same thing by my hairdresser did a quick search on amazon.co.uk and it delivers to Australia. The wide version converts to about AUD233 and regular version AUD200 delivered. Or you can buy them here from the cloud9 website for $315.

  • Sorry to hijack this post, but for those who have hair, are those any good?

    http://www.ghdhair.com/au/hair-dryers/ghd-air-copper-luxe-gi…

    • Haven't tried that one - I have a Parlux 3200 ionic which I love. But I have straightish fine hair so can't vouch for use with other hair types

  • Don't know much about hair straighteners but are the one on sale on the GHD website the same as this one?
    http://www.ghdhair.com/us/special-offers-us

My bad, just realised the prices are in USD

    • The link above is usd and you need to add shipping and require power adapter. The deal posted is local Oz stock available in store. If your thinking about ghd this is a great deal

  • Why do I keep reading whore-house in the title?

    • +2

      Lol you been somewhere lately?

      • +1

Unfortunately no … too expensive. I suspect a lot of people would be all over this deal, if it was a whore-house offering 37% discount!

I've used GHDs since 2006 and have had every version now. The IV and V (older versions with the gold plates) are fab and always did a great job. I then upgraded to the Eclipse and it started playing up after a year or so. I had no problem exchanging it for a new one direct from GHD. They posted it out before receiving the faulty one (reply paid postage). That one then failed after another 1.5 years and, again, no problem replacing it, this time for the Platinum (Eclipse no longer made). Sounds like a lot of faults but I suspect they may have been from misuse (shhhh) because I travel quite a bit and it gets knocked about a lot.

Pro's of the Platinum compared to IV and V - super fast heat up, audible tone when it's ready for use, good spring compared to Eclipse, matte finish (easier to grip).

Performance is about the same as the Eclipse and the IV and V, and not worth upgrading if you have an earlier model IMO. But $199 is a great deal, I've never seen it that low, and suspect salons will be buying them too.

  • I bought these Christmas Eve for $315, a bit bummed out oh well it happens. I did get $100 of hair product pack with it though.

  • Just bought my partner one for $270 for xmas :( typical

  • Did some research and looks like glampalm is the best for leaving your hair healthy. Going to get this for the missus with boxing day sales.

    • Boxing Day Sales? - In 2017?

      • +1

They continue for a week in Australia.

  • I got a pair of GHD's about 5 years ago, on sale but still around $250….. worst decision ever, I used them maybe twice a week for 6/7 months before they fell apart piece by piece! Crap quality, I'm currently using a no name $30 pair not as regularly but they've lasted about 3 years.
