probably a stupid question but can you use these games after your PlayStation+ Expires (and isn't renewed) ? AKA are they FREE forever once you download them or just a limited time.

    • +13

Nope, once your subscription has run out you can't play them any more.

If you renew your subscription at a later date, any games you had purchased previously will be available again :)

    • +8

No, once your PS+ expires you can't use the free games. But if you obtain PS+ again at a later date, you'll have access to them again. Or at least thats what I've been told lol.

      • +2

cool thanks, amazing how simular the response was and just seconds apart :)

        • they are the same person just wanted to let you know twice!

  • +6

    Another month, another dissapointment.

    • +19

Yeah I know right? How dare they dish us up $40 worth of critically acclaimed indie games for next to nothing? I was expecting I'd get COD IW and Dishonoured 2 for my $8 a month.

        • +5

I'm really not sure what would qualify it as a 'scam'. Usually for something to be labelled a 'scam' you're required to be promised something that isn't delivered. Sony's deal here with PS+ has always been very transparent. Subjectively not enjoying the value of something you clearly agreed to doesn't mean you've been scammed.

Perhaps if people are skeptical of the value of what is on offer they shouldn't enter into a relationship with a Sony product.

I'm personally really super sick of the whining. If you hate the games they offer every month this much, and don't consider the multiplayer functionality to be worth .8 of a Subway Veggie Delight footlong per month, just walk away and stop complaining.

        • +1

Well I play PS4 multiplayer everyday and I am very happy to pay for that. These bonus games are basically just icing on top, I personally think the current price of PSN is a steal :-)

        • @voldemort:
Pay $60 for a triple A shooter, pay another $70 a year to enable you to play it online.

You've already been ripped console price for the game and you take an additional fee for multiplayer bent over backwards.

          Bravo.

Get a handful of no name "free" rentals and you're happy as Larry.

Meanwhile XB1 frequently has subscriptions for $40/year, has better online UI and cheaper game download tokens. They don't pretend to give away free rentals.

Haven't even mentioned that all this is free on PC and was free on PS3…

        • +1

@plasmapuff: This. I love my PS4 but would prefer they give out one free decent game even every couple of months. Saints Row and NBA this year were cool. But I don't have the time or interest to play a bunch of indie titles.

        • @voldemort: did i hear cake

        • +5

          @djmm: Where?

        • +2

Yeah, PS+ really is making it tempting to make PS4 the last console I ever purchase.

Mostly because of having to pay for multiplayer content.

Also because consoles are no longer at the bleeding edge, and, as far as i've been told, a mid range $1,000 ish notebook will play games to the same quality or better than a PS4.

Also because it's very easy to use a PS4 / Xbox controller on PC now, I believe. And because there doesn't seem to be the configuration problems that they're used to be decades ago.

Also because I no longer game on my big screen in the lounge and have got used to playing on my 24" LCD. I actually far prefer it, especially as I don't have to worry about if someone else wants to use the big screen in the lounge.

Also because the cost of PCs / notebooks / surface tablet hybrids are falling. I can imagine having an all in one foldable tablet that is a match for most consoles before long.

Also because Steam and other sites have VERY low cost games, and because the recent releases tend to be lower in price and go on sale more quickly than console games do.

The only plus side to console gaming, or one of the only pluses, is that you can buy physical disks second hand at a low cost, and then sell them for much the same price. Oh and I think there's less hacking / cheating going on with console games.

        • +1

@davedrastic: I have a high range notebook/ laptop purchased in the last year with a dedicated graphics card and it doesn't come CLOSE to doing what my PS4 does.

        • -3

I think you should just stick to playing board games. Actually nah…you're the type that would spill your drink all over the game and expect the manufacturer to send you a replacement free of charge.

You'd also expect the board game to be supplied with instant friends to play with via the manufacturer and they must also be provided their own snacks and drinks via the manufacturer.

You paid good money for that board game if they didn't you'd feel ripped off and scammed.

        • -1

@HereBobButtons: lol, a downvote for being a slightly time-poor PS4 fan. Get a grip whoever you are, (profanity).

        • +1

@plasmapuff: Easy… sell your PS4 and stick to your XBOX.

If you want free multiplayer, then play those games on PC.

        • -4

          @JajaMinx:
People like you is what is letting Sony get away with this.

You're paying for something that used to be free.

A polished turd is still a turd.

        • @plasmapuff:

Used to be free on PS3, but never free on PS4.

If subscription is not free on XBOX, then why should it be free on the Playstation?
There ain't no such thing as a free lunch.

I mean, if you're not happy with what they charge for the PS+ subscription then just play on the XBOX with cheaper LIVE subscription or on the PC for free. You do have a choice, you know that right?

The $69.95 Sony charges for a yearly subscription isn't unreasonable.
It's around $6 per month and the monthly games they offer are worth more than $6.
If you have a PS3 or vita, you will have free games for those systems as well.
For example, Yakuza 5 was free on the PS3 and that game alone will cost you $20.45 if you buy it now.

You can choose to grow or hunt for your own food, but why do you choose to buy food from the supermarket?
You're paying for something that can be free.

        • +1

@carlscott1982: Right. Yeah a salesman told me they were as good, but others have told me he was talking out of his behind

        • +3

@JajaMinx: $6 for 6 games sure does seem like a good deal, but not so much when none of those game hold any appeal.

Yes ur right, the (AAA) games given out in the PS3 PS+ era were generally awesome. And I think a lot (most) PS+ PS4 owners have been presuming that Sony hasn't given out many (older) AAA games because the console had been relatively new. But that's no longer a convincing argument.

Personally I don't think the PS+ game selection has been awful. I think they're selecting good quality indie games, and good quality older AAA games. It's just that for me I have very low interest in indie games - however I do enjoy the real gems, and unfortunately for me i've not had any interest in the recent AAA games (N2K16, Lord of the Fallen, Transformers), although I do view them as being quality offerings - just not games i'm interested in.

        • -1

          @JajaMinx:

What dkes an xbox have to do with this. With your logic I can say PC gaming doesnt charge for online so why should psn?

        • +3

          @suicine94:

The logic is, they are charging for PSN and we have a choice to subscribe or not.
Instead of whinging about how Sony charges $69 for subscription and not giving us AAA titles (e.g. Battlefield 1, Titanfall 2, Watchdogs 2) for free, we can elect to play the same games on the XBOX or PC.

I don't mind the Indie games because it helps to support the smaller developers.
Most of us won't even consider Indie titles unless they are free.
I see it as a good platform to promote Indie games/developers.

My point is, if you're not happy with the PS+ offering then feel free to play your favourite games on the XBOX or PC.
All the unnecessary whining about how they charge more than XBOX Live and not giving us the games we want.
Then GET AN XBOX and subscribe to XBOX LIVE if their offering is more attractive to you.

"Get a handful of no name "free" rentals and you're happy as Larry.

Meanwhile XB1 frequently has subscriptions for $40/year, has better online UI and cheaper game download tokens. They don't pretend to give away free rentals.

Haven't even mentioned that all this is free on PC and was free on PS3…"

So much whining over a trivial matter.
I'm not defending Sony, but I have a problem with spoiled brats that feel entitled to everything.

This is a list of some excellent titles in 2016:

          Tropico 5
          Table Top Racing: World Tour
          NBA 2K16
Saints Row: Gat out of Hell
Badland: Game of the Year Edition
          Resident Evil
          Transformers: Devastation
          Hyper Void

They are worth more than $69 combined.
If people don't like the above list of games then bad luck, not everything has to turn out the way they want.

        • +1

          @davedrastic:

          I totally agree with you.

I disagree with him for being so extreme to call it a scam and piece of turd, when he's just being arrogant and self entitled.

        • I agree. Paying for multiplayer is a serious blow to console gaming. Bring back the free PSN days like on the PS3. I've had my PS4 for a few years now and played a few hours here and there over Christmas. No way would I benefit from this, and the games definitely don't attract..

      • $70 isnt next to nothing to me

        • +1

Setting aside multiplayer entirely, and assuming you have a single PS4 that's a minimum of 24 games for $70 (usually there's smaller cross platform titles as well some months so really the number is closer to 30 games per annum for $70 which is roughly $2.30-3~ per game). If you've got a Vita or an old PS3 kicking around it's more like $1 a game.

But by all means if you think this is lousy value, obviously you can take a pass on it.

        • -1

          @IPYF:
Some people don't want indie rentals they've never heard of and just want to play multiplayer.

They should decouple multiplayer from their PSN package like PS3 and stop pretending that it's good value if you have no interest in a bunch of no name indie games every month.

        • -1

@plasmapuff: Again, play multiplayer on XBOX live or PC if you think the PS+ subscription is a rip off.

The World does not revolve around you.
If you think a product does not give good value at the right price then choose a different product.

      • +2

Not worth it anymore PSN plus is rubbish on PS3 And PS4. More crappy in PS4

    • There aren't that many good games for PS4 if you're not into killing or violence, so the pool to choose from is extremely limited.

I guess they try their best with what's available to discount.

      • If you not into killing and violence why you video game?

        • For fun :)

    • +5

This years (2016) PS+ games have been pure rubbish

      • What about NBA2k16? Transformers? These are pretty good games to give away

      • Journey and Badland back in September were pretty good, althought I assume most people would have played Journey already. Resident Evil was fun to play through again too with the hi def remake.

But you can see the difference with the PS3 titles, they were stacked with AAA games because there's little reason to pay for PSPlus otherwise.

        • +2

Yep, good point (they were stacked with AAA games because there's little reason to pay for PSPlus otherwise). Cynical, but good. In hindsight we were probably all honey potted.

  • +1

Requires $69.95 subscription for a year.

  • +9

Day of the Tentacle is an awesome game, no complaints here (be weird playing without a mouse though)

Is This War of Mine the critically acclaimed game or some sort of spin-off?

    • I just finished Broken Sword 5 using the dual shock and it was one of the better uses of the touch pad (the touch pad controls a mouse cursor) hopefully they have done the same thing for DOTTR.

    • +5

Very much agreed there for day of the tentacle.. I remembered that from my ol school PC gaming days. Ah the joys of add on sound cards and drivers. Autoexec.bat anyone

    • +2

It's the critically acclaimed game with the later released DLC.

      • +1

Wow, in that case this is an excellent slate of games for January! No complaints!

        • Don't need PS+, I downloaded it for free off the PSN Store without a PS+ Subscription the other day.

Just goes into my catalogue of games I want to play but don't have the time for…

  • +4

NBA 2K16 and Transformers were to only two games I really liked on PS+ in recent memory. Think I'll let mine lapse in January.

I find the Xbox One has better games on Games with Gold, plus you get some bonus 360 games - not that i play them.

    • +1

Remember to turn off auto renew for the ps plus (have to do it through the console interface) otherwise it will use your card or wallet credit and renew before you realise.

    • +2

Yeah, they're the only AAA games for a long while. Oh they had that Lord of the Fallen one too. Thing is, if ur not into those types of games ur SOOL. I guess that's true of any game, but I think if they throw 10 AAA games at us a year, about 5 should be of interest to each PS+ subscriber. Or something like that.

Personally I don't feel the need to be handed a game I'm interested in every month, but I really ought to get around $60 value a year from the games given that a) I don't get to keep them and b) I don't get to choose them.

I think Sony would be smart to let us choose a game a month. You can have this game or this game. You can have these 3 indie games, or one of the two old AAA games. Next month you'll get to choose from the same old AAA game you've not yet selected. Or, you can forfeit any new games for 50% off one of these 3 games.

They need to do something because way too many people are getting way too pissed off. Sure, it's fairly unlikely people will jump from PS4 to Xbone, but people will wake up to the fact that they're paying for online only which they don't have to do with PC.

  • +2

I'm usually the first one to complain about crappy monthly games but I'm pleasantly surprised by this offering.

  • +2

Day of the Tentacle AND Titan Souls? Really, really glad I took a chance on that 20% off PS+ deal last week! :) It's already halfway paid off.

Edit: Looking forward to trying This War of Mine as well. Amazing month. Winners all around.

  • +1

My ps4 is mainly used to stream Netflix… Nothing in their existing library is appealing. After gaming for over 20 years you get over cod style games. The Last Guardian looks great but the only game I'm waiting on is Gran Turismo Sport

  • +2

Another month of trash. I cancelled my sub

    • +5

If it's multiplayer that you are using then I would give it up and play single player games. Cancel your sub and voice out to Sony. We must unite and tell them make multiplayer free on PS4 and PSN plus needs to be changed to make it worthwhile with better titles.

I'm not paying a single dollar on sub unless they change

  • +2

For anyone complaining, This War of Mine is an insanely good game. One of the very best. I paid $60 at retil and it was worth every cent.

  • +5

I played day of the tentacle back in the day on PC when I first got a Creative Sound Blaster CD ROM around 1995 Along with San & Max Hit the Road. Took me like 2 days to configure that thing with the right IRQs and DMAs. I also own the last of us on PC and agree it's a great game.

Everyone thinks they're a gamer yet it's surprising that these gamers are whinging about these offerings because they are highly regarded games. I only game on a PS4 these days because it's a quick and convenient way to play battlefield with people I know that don't care about the PC Gamer / PS4 diatribe. I guess as I got older I just got sick of messing around and tweaking shit on the PC. I just want to play a damn game.

I have no problem to pay for ps+ because then it ensures we get a competent product where issues would be dealt with much faster than if it was free. If Sony didn't charge for the service then where would the incentive be to improve the platform?

There's always going to be people that expect all that and then some for a price of 'on tha house' and still not be happy. I remember when I worked sales, we could spot those people from a mile away. My favourite line when it came to a low-balling tight wad was 'you know what, I don't think this product is for you' and just leave them be. They're the customer no one wants. The customer that doesn't know what value is. The customer that doesn't realise that their patronage doesn't actually help the business. If this type of customer left PS+, the type whinging about price, the type that would expect a $20 game to make you a coffee and wash your dog you'd be doing Sony's bottom line and product quality a favour.

    • +3

You own The Last of Us on PC?

I think you state your argument eloquently, but it doesn't quite hold up.

If I gave you the code to be able to digital download every single Wiggles DVD, which has a retail value of say $500+, but you're unable to resell the code and it only lasts for a certain period of time, and you have no interest in the Wiggles and no children or such that would be interested in The Wiggles, would you pay me $60 for the code?

The only sensible answer is no.

And by saying no you turn yourself into a tight wad as per your argument.

When in actuality you're simply not a fan of the Wiggles and don't see any value in owning their digital DVDs even though you acknowledge that they are hugely popular, professional and a joy for children.

Thing is, I can see the value of the current PS+ lineup, as well as other recent lineups, but for me personally they hold no interest. I can't get any utility from the subscription, other than online play which is free on other platforms, despite recognising that the games are quality and have their audience.

      • +1

Meant to say this war of mine, always get the titles confused since I'm re playing it. I'm sure one can comfortable assume what I meant seeing as I'm talking about Day of the tentacle as well.

I don't really see what your analogy is trying to illustrate. You're talking about initially giving me wiggles codes to watch all the wiggles media and then talking about me not buying it for $60 and then not being able to re sell it? What sort of Socratic method of deduction is that to show my argument doesn't hold up? How is that analogous to a ps+ subscription service let alone someone buying a game? Ps+ In addition to many other offers allows you access to free games whilst you are currently a member and they would stipulate as such in their terms of service. Similar to any other subscription service.

If someone doesn't want to pay to access online gaming on PS+, then PS4 online gaming is not for them and by all means they can go to cheaper / free alternatives. Even gaming is laissez-faire

I'd still pay for PS+ without the free games, because I use it for their online services. $70 a year to access online play is nothing. The ones that think it's exhorbitent are the people that give an inch and take a mile. Consumers that don't realise that it costs something to maintain a service. I don't think you get that though. I'm a tightwad because I wouldn't take a wiggles code or buy a wiggles code to watch wiggles or something?

        • My analogy is good.

You were talking about customers being tighwads for not wanting to buy items they don't see value in.

          Same thing at play here.

Sure, the current line up of games have a retail value, and they're quality games that many enjoy. No argument. But if they're not of interest to the subscriber, then they have little to no value. Which presumably given ur an adult, having access to the Wiggles library would also have little to no value.

        • $70 a year to access online play is nothing.

$100 is nothing. $2000 is nothing.

No, the classic $0 for online play is nothing, actually.

    • I remember those days too. I never actually finished Day of the Tentacle, so for me, this will be a great chance to relive the experience and also hopefully finish the game!

    • +2

Exactly on the same boat. I remember tinkering and tweaking PC's to play games editing config.sys, autoexec.bat files LH programs, need extended memory, upper memory what not, DMA, IRQ, then windows came in, needed the right drivers, constant updates on hardware, video card Ram, motherboard, needed to keep up with the latest else can't play.

I got sick of it as I aged and have a family now. PS4 is the way to go. No hassles plug and play except with system updates

However I disagree with PSN offerings at the current price point. PS3 PSN was much better than current one and still very good, no need to pay for multiplayer. Sony just got greedy. That's all

  • -2

+1 upvote for the information, not the game selection

  • +4

If you only need PS Plus to play multiplayer like me, I would recommend getting PS Plus subscription from different regions. I got 1 year PS plus on Canadian PSN for $AUD and now it has increased to almost the same price as Australian PSN. Good for me, I did not have to pay that much. One other region I know that has the cheapest PS plus is Indonesia which has 1 year for AUD $36.

    • +2

Yep, I've had US PSN when the aussie dollar was good a few years ago, but I found PS+ not worth it as I'm very picky with games.
Now I need the stupid crap to play online so I use a SEA (Indo) for $36 per year…$3 a month, it's hard to complain if I don't like the "free games"

    • edit: Canadian PSN for AUD $50 just before 22nd September 2016

    • +2

I refuse to pay for multiplayer. It was free on PS3 And Sony just being plain greedy with excuses on keeping the platform costs on PS4. They can afford it without passing the costs. I'm sure there are plenty of people who don't subscribe like me and give up multiplayer. Think casual gamers

  • Feeling very glad i didnt purchase the discounted ps plus subscription now.

    • get indonesian PS plus which costs AUD $36 for 1 year if you really need PS Plus

    • Same thought

  • +2

    Hahaha The Swindle.
They're not even trying to hide it anymore.

  • +4

the years worth of games is easily worth it, some people just want too much. I know I got games I wanted every year and I've been a member for the last 7 years.

  • Looking forward to This War of mine

  • -1

Two very good games, both of which I have on steam (DOTT and Titan Souls) and the other 4 don't look too appealing to me. Another disappointing month. Oh well.

  • Titan Souls is still showing $22.95?

  • +2

lol, the monthly bitchfest about PS Plus. I guess people on here are too young to remember when games cost $120+ each. And that was in 90's money and when games cost a tiny fraction to make of what they cost today. Now we can pick up any new release game for under $70, or get them at insanely discounted prices in no time (I just saw Fallout 4 selling for $15) but have to have a cry about those horrible greedy gaming companies robbing us blind by charging us $2 a week to use servers that cost millions of dollars to maintain and keep free of hackers while throwing in some (often very good) games to compensate. Lifes hard.

I guess Im just one of the lucky ones, $2 a week doesnt really hurt. Hell, I put a months worth of PS Plus into the Coke machine at work today.
