  • In NYC worth staying near Times Square. It's very central and has access to most of the main subway lines from 2 stations. Recommend the knickerbocker which is on Times Square. Don't eat at Times Square as most restaurants are a ripoff but staying in a hotel there is the best of everything and worth the $$$.

I disagree. Staying near Times Square is not really where you want to be. I would be staying nearer to SoHo if I were you. I always stay near there and never regret it.

OP I know it isn't just you but when you ask for a hotel recommendation it is really annoying when you don't indicate a price range.

      Can you spend $250 a night? $300?

In LA I would try and stay near Santa Monica.

Uber is extremely cheap in LA.

In New York use the subway.

      • $250-$300 max

        • Ok so $250-300 a night should give you some very good options.

I would book somewhere ASAP though. Ideally that has free cancellation. The closer to the stay you book the more expensive it's gonna be.

As I said above I would highly recommend staying in SoHo.

The Hampton inn in Soho is a good option. I've heard good things about the courtyard as well.

Again I would NOT stay in Times Square. It's too busy even at night. It's cool to see but theres no need to spend a lot of time there.

  • For NYC it depends on what you are doing and where you are going. It is a very large place, but easy enough to get around.

We stayed at what is now the Hyatt Centric Times Square New York on the 44th floor so had a good view of the city, but not times square specifically. We were there for a week in September 2015. Would stay there again without hesitation. Only a few years old. We did a couple of days downtown and a couple of days uptown and a couple of days focused around time square and a day at Coney Island. There were quite a few decent and cheap(ish) places around the hotel.

    • I have stayed in The Warwick which was beautiful and had just been refurbished (this is about 4 years ago now). Most recently stayed at the Archer which was even nicer, but the rooms were a bit smaller.

LA I stayed near Hollywood Blvd. Big mistake. It's a dirty tourist trap. Santa Monica would be much nicer.

Agree with knick007 on the Uber and Subway comments above.

LA isn't the greatest city to visit, it really depends what you want to do while your there. If your there to see Hollywood the Hollywood celebrity hotel at around $150 a night is close to the action. I've stayed there a few times and is pretty basic but cool.

    • In a similar area the 'Magic Castle Hotel', despite being a budget hotel, was excellent when we were there last year

Its very well rated on tripadvisor and had the best staff/service of any of the 5 hotels we stayed at in California. How can you not like cheesy magic tricks performed for you at breakfast :)

Stay at the Roosevelt in Hollywood. Old school hotel of the stars.

I stayed there too. It's literally across from Mann's Chinese Theater and lovely grand old hotel. But it's also ridiculously expensive for what it is. I was keeping an eye on it when I went in Oct and they wanted $600 per night. Eventually the price dropped to $300 the day before I left and I snapped it up.

That being said, it's a famous hotel and worthwhile to stay at once in your life, like Raffles in Singapore.

Definitely jump on to the trip advisor New York City Forum https://www.tripadvisor.com.au/ShowForum-g60763-i5-New_York_…
to ask your questions regarding NYC.

Post the exact dates you wish to find accommodation for, how many people and what facilities you require eg one double bed for 2 people or a room with space for 2 adults 2 kids etc. Make sure you identify how much you are prepared to spend per night in USD. Be aware that hotels will charge 15% tax as well as an additional hotel tax, so your overall per night spend will need to be at least 15% more than your hotel cost.

My advice is also not to stay in Times Square, but try to make sure that you are close to a subway. you can check this out on google maps.

In terms of LA we stayed a a travelodge near the airport and caught public transport around. it suited us but then we weren't after the whole razzle dazzle of LA - we preferred quiet evenings in.

Just got back from 2 stays over 12 nights in New York (we went to Boston and Washington in between) at the Ramada Eastside. This was by far the best value hotel we could find.

It is very close to Empire State and 10-15 mins walk to Times Square. It also included a great continental breakfast each day (bagels, waffles, cereal, juice, pastries, doughnuts, yoghurt etc).

Book as early as possible - they have free cancellation. They are part of the Wyndham chain.

Top tip - try to get room 14 on any floor - they are the biggest!

    • What was the rate at the Ramada? Looks like a decent hotel.

      • It depends a lot on your dates. First stay was $155 USD + tax per night, second stay was over New Year and was $198 USD + tax per night.
