Frugal Usenet 12 Months $40 USD ($56 AUD)

50

Signed up tonight with Paypal. These guys are a Highwinds reseller with 600 days retention which should be good enough for most people.
Have a look at this Telstra cable user review which I stumbled upon recently:

  • Nice. I have been using Blocknews for a couple of years now, they are pretty good. The deal doesn't appear on the Blocknews site but if you log in and then click through from the deal page, you can get the offer as an existing user.

  • My internet is really slow so I'm looking for a cheap provider that has options of unlimited subscriptions with different speed choices. Any suggestions?

    • Sunny has cheap slow plans :-)

    • If your internet is slow and depending on how much you're likely to download, wouldn't a Block plan be a better option?

NewsGroupDirect have a special on 1TB download for US$40 for the next ~19.5 hours, (it's actually 1.1TB, they allow an extra 10% for headers).

Plus 3000+ days retention, completion ratio is very good.

I used to have a subscription with AstraWeb but since I no longer am the Usenet whore I once was I now just use block accounts at AstraWeb and NewsGroupDirect.

So far, the ~1TB of block I started with has lasted 4+ years with still ~250GB left.

  • Anyone know if easynews is still the only service with the autounrar feature?

    • Autounrar can be configured by your client. I use Alt.binz which can do that, with any service provider.

Easynews is for chumps paying way over market value for features that are free and easy to do on your own.

      • I like to stream stuff with wget so it's handy. My ISP has free usenet access anyway.

  • Frugal is very fast and reliable. The only downside is that they only have 600 days retention, which may not be enough for some.

  • Highwinds is fast, but its retention and completion is not good. A lot of binaries you won't be able to complete.

Even the price is not as good as the XS Usenet 60% off deal posted before xmas, which I thought was a steal. It didn't get much attention though, but that's ok. Rule #1 of Usenet and all.

  • Which provider do you guys recommend? any deals going on? i'm with astraweb atm but there's so many things incomplete it's almost useless. I signed up for a trial with usenet farm but just missed out on that 30% off deal, so far it's alright but only getting ~3MB/sec
